Title: EFIKA Bounty - New Developer - Tigger!
Post by: dammy on July 25, 2007, 11:22:57 AM
TheTeamAROS (http://www.teamaros.org) bounty for EFIKA was orginally assigned to John H.  Due to John's status as a brand new dad , family medicle issues, and work requirements, John asked to be released from the bounty.  Today, our own Tigger has agreed to be the new developer.

The bounty page for EFIKA will be down till the end of the week (Olivier2222 is on vacation), but you can read up on it here (http://www.thenostromo.com/archives/teamaros/2007-07/msg00007.html).

Hmm,
i feel EFIKA + AROS = the closest thing to a modern Amiga you can get these days.

Hopefully that works out. Btw, will this also run on the EFIKA 2?

Depends on how different EFIKA2 is over EFIKA1.  Since it has onboard gfx, I guess it would run VESA ok.  Other then that, it's going to need a new gfx driver.  Genesi isn't releasing any data on EFIKA2 till they are ready, so it's all guess work till that happens.  I would think they would FedEx a new mobo to Tigger when they have Dev boards ready, but that is up to them.

Surely Efika II would be easily supported based on th Efika I work, Seems a bit silly to pump aload of money into the Efika bounty knowing it would be no longer be produced...

I have heard about more stupid things concerning hardware than that.

But i guess you are right  :-D

December update can be found here (http://www.thenostromo.com/archives/teamaros/2007-12/msg00010.html).    EFKIA Bounty (http://thenostromo.com/teamaros2/?number=46) is still open for donations.  Tigger will be working hard during Christmas to bring you AROS on a EFIKA, shouldn't you leave a present for him?  :-D

Hi Dammy,

It's great to see people making such an effort with AROS...

I don't mean to appear to be a wet blanket or anything, but wouldn't it be better to concentrate all the AROS efforts into getting a stable and as fully featured distro as possible running on the most widely and easily available hardware (ie, x86/peecee)?

It just seems that the resources are being spread thin working on a port to a relatively obscure and limited hardware base...

Just my 2ยข!

Cheers,

Mike.

@mingle,

I used to think that as well, but it seems that different AROS folks have different programming skills for different things so its not that easy.

I'm happy at any progress on these projects! :-)

@mingle and @spihunter, you both raised good points IMO. AROS progress would be faster if limited to one platform (like x86). However, any progress is good progress. Ultimately one of the benefits of an open source OS is not being limited to one hardware platform.

AROS Developers are not a monolithic team.  Rather, independent individuals that works on what they like.  I will point out to you that AROS' porting to EFIKA is being done by Tigger who is not a normal AROS Dev.  This is his first AROS project, and I certainly do hope it's not his last.  Several Developers outside of the typical AROS developer's circle have worked on bounties, and some of those, have stuck around.

So in short, Devs working on making AROS stable are not doing the port to EFIKA.  Although one never knows if Tigger can find some coding error that will make AROS more stable.
