Title: My A1200D (Sparc) Rebuild Is Complete!
Post by: Jaruzel on June 26, 2003, 02:23:52 PM
Hi guys,

I'd just like to mention that my A1200D(Sparc) rebuild is complete:

For full details and 16 more pictures click here (http://www.Jaruzel.com/amiga).

Cheers,

That's one hell of a job, well done on that :-D

I like the idea of having the floppy/cd drives on the right of the case - it'd still feel like an Amiga when putting in floppies :-)

Hope you come up with a good ide for the PSU - the black thing is a bit hideous, and as you say it's noisy.

Looking really good! Good job!

Maybe you can fit the PSU if you replace the HD. Just remove the PSU tops and place it into the SPARC! A smaller regular 200W desktopPSU (compaq etc) will do the trick too and it's 40% smaller :)

Keep up the good work!

With reguards to a PSU, tiny (the make) pc's are well small and they have small psu's in them.

something like that maybe?

Thats great, but you should REALLY consider getting an A4000 keyboard. I know they're expensive, but I think it would make a perfect finishing touch!

Very Cool.  I've always loved the case design of the elder SPARCs.  It's too bad SUN droped the side-drive design with the Ultra 1.

Does an A4000 keyboard work the same way as a PC-AT keyboard, or would I need to rip out the keyboard adaptor ?

Need a special keyboard addapter that takes Amiga keyboards, or better yet get those that have auto detection and takes both Amiga and PC keyboards. :-D

Amiga keyboards do not use the same protocol as PC keyboards; however, some A1200 keyboard adaptors support both A4000/A2000 keyboards and PC ones, so check if yours supports them.

I was under the impression that it was easy to wire up an A4000 keyboard socket to an A1200 motherboard, and a quick look on aminet confirms that it is pretty simple, and the parts to do it should cost very little, with one problem. Apparently the A1200 and A4000 handle keyboard reset slightly differently, and it requires a little extra work to get that to work.

All the instructions you need are in the hard/hack directory on aminet.

Cooooooooooool!

A home made case like this is much more satisfying than buying an off the shelf item.  I I had the skills and patience I'd have concoted something for my A1200 like that instead of being lazy and buying a Power Tower.

Well done!

I know it's about a week late (so ppl might not see my comment :( ). But I was really impressed with that mate, good job! And a good photorecord  of what you did. I must admit, it has inspired me to get back to that rackmount project...

Any ideas how many hits you've had now?

Hey, Jaruzel, nice work, professional finish. Well done. Just one criticism - the screws on the DIN connectors are too long :-D

As to your PSU fan problem, I built my 4000 into an old Dell tower and to make it quiet, I ran three 12 volt fans, but all running from 5 V. They are nice and quiet, and together make enough breeze to keep everything cool. Of course, I used a "normal" 250W ATX PSU. You might be able to use the same idea.

Well done.

Bah!  Who cares?  They're a dime a dozen on eBay.  Personally, I think it's a beautiful hack.  Makes me want to get an el-cheapo SGI Indigo2 (r4k/xz) and make an SGI Amiga copycat.  :-)

Nice job.

@iamaboringperson

Um, ok, so I did.

For my next trick I'll hack to bits a fully working Sun Ultra 80 (http://integrator.solidex.pl/dane/39/3/zaw/39-03-01.gif) that I also have lying around...

No one wants old Sun boxes anymore, and the hassle of offloading them makes any money made negligible .

Yeah - that's a well done conversion, Jaruzel.

If I ever acquire an A3000 Desktop, I have one of THESE to use for a conversion:

This case solves the space-shortage problem in the A3000.
Hmmm! EIGHT 5ΒΌ" Bays for SCSI Drives!

and I could just sit the case in the middle of the floor! If a visitor was to complain, . . . I'd say:"Well, you just have to get over it!"

@amigamad

Isn't it? Unfortunately my unit isn't as clean as that dude's.
I've found that a lot of superseded IT gear is being discarded.
In the past few months, I've came across such things as DAT and
MO backup/data storage devices with horizontal (the DAT) or
vertical (the MO) internal transport systems to load and unload
their respective data cartridges.

Other than that HP NetServer, I've acquired an ATX Tower 24" high.

No, they work like Javascript links are supposed to, just that I (and I reckon there's a lot of people that would agree with me here) like to control my own web browser windows, thank you very much :-)
