in my recent posts about my A2000 I opened it up to look at the cards, etc. I noticed some minor battery (barrel) leakage. Should I go ahead and cut this puppy out ?
The computer runs fine now, but I have already put ~ 100$ into it (upgrading to 3.1, etc.) and I dont want it tanking on me.
If jsut cutting it out is ok can I snip the leads to the Mobo? anything else with leakage that is important? I am planning on getting some isoprobyl and cleaning unless I hear otherwise.

Get it out! First signs of leakage are enough for me to grab my plyers...
The easiest way to take out the battery is to cut the pin with small plyers (or a nailcutter) on the side of the battery where there's just one pin, and then start wiggling until the two pins on the other side break. If you want to put in a new battery is easier to desolder the old one, so you will have open pinholes on the mainboard..

I thought this might be the case. well I will cut her out now. Leaving the posts should allow me to add in a battery fairly easily in the future, no?

Did you clean the surrounding area with iso alcohol? You need to as the acid will be working 24/7 on your board! You could add another battery to the posts if you'd like, or just add another battery later. Or even a Lithium coin cell!

Best bet is to remove it properly with a low watt soldering iron. You'll be able to replace the battery easier and cleaner.

The standard Varta battery is soldered on the bottom of the motherboard. If you snip out the old battery, leaving the ears, you'll have excellent platform for the new battery, as noted below.
(1) Clean motherboard with electronic board cleaner.
(2) solder "18 inches of insulated wires" to those ears. Red to +, Black to -.
(3) route the wiring, using cable ties as needed, to the front of the power supply cage, near to video slot.
(4) Attach battery. Notch top edge of plastic medicine bottle to allow wires to pass under cap.
(5) Insert battery in medicine bottle, and secure with plastic tie to power supply cage.
I have used this idea with small 3.6v telephone batteries. No more bothersome battery on the motherboard.

To clean you can use a toothbrush. Scrub the surrounding area with some vinegar mixed in with water to neutralize the battery acid, then clean it with some alcohol or metho. Use a hair dryer or leave it to dry properly for a few days before powering it back up.

Errrrr vinegar is acidic, so I doubt it will be very effective at neutralising battery acid.

That battery "acid" tends to be base (alkaline), sodium hydrochloride, so vinegar is fine.
