Title: 32bit on A1200 possible?
Post by: Gwion on July 13, 2007, 04:34:15 PM
I want my A1200 to be able to display 32bit colour without turning it into a tower it it possible? Is it possible to to it without a Bvision kit?

AGA can already do 24bit colour, but I suppose you're talking about 24bit truecolour.

The only solution I can think of is BPPC + BVisionPPC + tons of fans + cooling vents.

Didn't you ask the same question here (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=30184)?

Asking things twice doesn't make it happen all the time, you know... ;-)

How much would it cost for me to have a PPC With BVision? Or how much would it cost to turn my A1200 into a tower with CD drive and Graphics card?

If you go the BVision road about 250(verry lucky) - 500 EUR. If you go the tower road and stick to zorro instead of PCI you might get away with less then 150 EUR. Though you should add at least a small turboboard to the setup. Just shoveling data though the dead slow chip RAM to the GFX-ram isn`t fun.

They're not cheap, from $50 to $400 depending on cards capabilities ...

/me thinks the best is the MediTator way.

 But will costs, hum... let see... a lot!

 But you'll have not only a RTG graphics system (Voodoo! It is faster than any card maded for the Amiga), but in addition you COULD HAVE:

- Ethernet (even fast ethernet);
- USB (no!that you cannot!);
- An audio board like a soundblaster;
- TV turners;
- External "pc" keyboard (not included in the package, but you'll NEED IT, if that is your choice).

Mediator has really slow bus though, slower than CVPPC/BVPPC. Roughly speaking: If the graphics is in the VMEM already or you're doing 3D, then voodoo is faster. If the speed is measured by moving pixels with CPU to VMEM, then CVPPC/BVPPC wins.

even fast ethernet

Which is not working at full fast ethernet speeds.

USB

With which USB stack?

Quote
TV turners

Analog TV only. Many countries are pacing out analog TV, or have already done so.

Yeah, but it's a newer RTG system (I know there not THAT new) ;-)

Noticed that, too. "Fast" ethernet is marginally faster than regular (10 Mbit/s) one.

Did you see my remark?

This feature is questionable, but exists...

 But there is a way to have 32bit colours on an ORIGINAL AGA system: lick a LSD pill! :lol:

Ah, I saw it, just didn't manage to decipher it. :-)

Funnily AmigaOS itself stores colours in 96bit (32bit per gun). Talk about overkill... :-)

Without getting into your debate about how 1 system compares with another, having only recently towered my A1200 with mediator etc (see sig), I can honestly say this is close to being a perfect Amiga. I can even switch it off using a mouse!

Having said that, it costs a lot to create it compared to a PC and you have to decide whether you want an Amiga or PC to do what you want.

But in general, any graphics card equipped miggy is far, far better than a stock one.

Check www.Amigakit.com for prices; Matthew's service is brilliant and will help with knowledgeable advice.

Most analogue tuners have S-Video or composite so you can plug in any set top box with those connections.

There are many PCMCIA VGA-out cards (EZ2TV, NoteTV-Pro, VoyagerVGA, and many more), but none with drivers for A1200.

An easy way would be an external USB video card like these:

IOGear USB 2.0 External VGA Video Card
http://www.iogear.com/main.php?loc=product&Item=GUC2015V

CoolGear USB 2.0 SVGA Adapter
http://www.usbsvga.com/

But unfortunately the Subway USB for A1200 don't support the USB2.0' hi-speed mode that is required.

Anyway, AGA HAM8 is cool... slow but cool. :)
