Title: KickStart ROMs and all that?
Post by: Bobbin on July 10, 2007, 09:45:28 AM
Hooray, an Amiga forum! Perhaps someone can answer my question?

OK, I have an Amiga 500, but it doesn't play sound, and is quite slow (that's not the problem, hold on), so I decided I should get an emulator on my Windows XP, instead (because I love the Amiga so much). But - you have to buy the KickStart ROMs for the emulator. This put me off the idea... until I learnt that you can get the ROM off your own Amiga.

So I pose the question to you - How do I get the ROM off my Amiga?

All help will be gratefully received. :-D

Assuming you have some way of transferring files between the amiga and the PC, you can use the TransROM (from WinUAE\Amiga Programs\transrom) to dump the kickstart ROM to a file. Then you just move the file over to the PC.

instructions (http://www.pcguru.plus.com/uae_transfer.html) (this assumes you have a way to move files over)

There's a program in the UAE archive to get it (transrom?), but you still need to get the program onto a disk readable by your Amiga somehow. Easy if you've got Workbench 2.04+ or any system with CrossDOS.

I'm guessing, however, your A500 is just a Kickstart 1.3 machine. Either way, anything less than Kickstart 3.1 is no good for modern Amiga stuff, so you really ought to look at just biting the bullet and buying the emulator.
