Title: Formatting, Partitioning and Installing WB 1.3 on HD
Post by: trip6 on July 06, 2007, 09:51:47 PM
Can somebody walk me through how to format, partition and install Workbench 1.3 on my new Hard Drive?

Here is what I am running on:

A500
Kickstart 1.3 ROM
Workbench 1.3
1.5 Meg RAM (1 MB trapdoor)
GVP A500 HD+

Any other helpful technical suggestions are also appreciated...

Thanks.

Boot off of a floppy, put in the GVP utils disk and use that to prep and format the drive. Then boot off of the OS install floppy and follow the prompts!

1.3 doesn't have an install floppy.  Easiest thing to do is boot from the Workbench disk, start a shell/cli window and copy the contents of the WB disk to HD, using something like:

copy df0:#? dh0: all clone

... if I'm remembering the syntax correctly.

Then remove the floppy and reboot!  It doesn't get much simpler than that  :-D

*EDIT* The GVP software might include a utility to copy Workbench over, that might be the better approach if such a thing exists.

I somewhat recently installed 1.3 to a partition on my A3000. It's a little tough falling back to a far more limited shell and Workbench than we're accustomed to with 3.1, but there are tools to make your life easier.

As another poster mentioned, definitely use the GVP FaaaastPrep disk. That'll get you partitioned and formatted. It might even copy your Workbench and Extras floppies for you (I don't remember).

For my A3000, however, since I can't find a copy of the genuine A3000 Install disk, I found the install disk from the 2091 to be quite helpful. It has prep scripts and tools for the Commodore scsi.device that probably aren't too useful for your GVP controller, but it also has a script to install your Workbench and Extras disks plus additional hard drive utilities not on the regular floppies. Take a look at it (disk images are kicking around the net) or the 590 install disk (they might even be the same thing) if your GVP disk doesn't do everything.

format the hardisk using gvp tools
then copy the contents of workbench 1.3 disk to the hardisk

then on the S dir you will find 2 startup-sequences one for floppy and one for hardisk named startup-sequence-hd

rename that file to starup-sequence ...overwriting the other of course

thats all

Thanks guys, I've been out of the amiga scene for 15 years and just starting to acquire some hardware and get back into it... Your help is greatly appreciated.
