Hi Folks,
I am an old Amiga user, but I was never into hardware.
I have a A500 with Rev6A board. I am trying to install a kickstart ROM from my old A2000, 3.1 40.68. When installed, A500 won't boot, it gives a Software Failure error (red blinking), if you hit left mouse button, screen goes to black.
If I reinstall the original 1.3 ROM, all is fine. The 3.1 ROM is ok on A2000 as well.
Any suggestions? To my knowledge it should work without any problems, am I misinformed?
TIA,
PalMop

No, you are right, it should work so (I have it working). Contact problem or wrong orientation/all pins not in the socket?
Test again 3.1 in A2000 and 1.3 in A500 and again 3.1 in A500 - hopefully nothing is broken.
-
AS far as i know it should work, as the same rom for 3.1 is used in the a500 as the 2000 not sure why it would not work in an a500 but work in the 2000. Do you have any type of trapdoor expansion or hard drive .? :-?

All the pins are in without any problems and the chip works still fine in A2000. When I insert 1.3 ROM, it works, even if it is not inserted to the socket fully (all legs of course in the sockets), so I doubt it is a contact issue.
On a side note, I had another ROM, sent by the original owner of A500 (I got it from Ebay), and that didn't work at the time, but I didn't bother, as 1.3 was fine. I don't know where the chip is now, so I can't test it on A2000 now, but there is a chance something else is causing the issue.
The A500 has a memory expansion to 1Mb. Should I remove and try that?

Are you sure it is a rev 6 board and not a rev 5 board.
If you want send me the rom and I will check it out.
N/C just postage.
-
Well, I am not expert, but on the right side of the board it clearly says REV6A, that's where I got the info from.
I won't be into work for two days, but I can send a pic on Friday.

...could someone here who is registered at amiga.org tell the chap with the a500 and 3.1 ROM, that he will need to run a simple jumper wire connecting 2 pins on the ROM...I just stuffed a copper wire in the pin holes on the mobo...search for jumper a500 ROM or such in the relevant places for the 2 pin locations...some of the ROMs shipped with the jumper, back in the good ole daze!

A normal memory expansion should be OK, as I have a 501 clone .5 MB expansion on my puter, as well as Megachip2 giving me total 2 MB Chip. Perhaps your mobo is somehow modified; are there jumper wire(s) to be seen. Is the memory expansion a "normal" one? Odd...
-
As far as I can see there is no jumper wires on the ROM (I'll double check on Friday), I thought the jumper was only needed for old motherboards, like Rev5
-
Checked for sure on Aminet. Rev 3 & Rev 5 need the jumper wire. Rev 6A & the rare 7 don't need the wire.
-
The rom is clean, I can't see any wires on it... Any other ideas?

silly question... you mounted it right way?
Though i doubt it would even output a guru msg if it was mounted wrong way...
But yeah, i would try it without any extern devices, like memory, hard disk controllers and so on.. just to see.

You don't need any jumper wires for a 3.1 ROM on an A500 Rev 6A board. I have one in mine (on a ROM switcher) and it works fine without any jumper wires.

Are you sure it says 40.68? It should be version 40.63. 40.68 ROMs are for A1200, A3000/3000T and A4000. And, just to back up what others have said, no jumpers are needed on a 40.63 ROM for a Rev6A A500.

Yup, it says 40.68.

and it was inserted properly, with the curved ends matching (otherwise you get a black screen with nothing)

Ok, what's error number you get with this rom installed?
-
If the rev 7 is rare how rare is my rev 8a1 with 2 meg agness and 2 meg fast ram on board ? and yes it works with 3.1 roms no wires :-) :-) :-)

The Error Message is:
Software Failure
0000 0003 Task 00c03500
If you wait, machine resets itself and 30 sec. later, you see the same error. It is a loop.
Today, I tried another 3.1 ROM I had (I got it when I first got the machine), same error. So I am beginning to wonder if it is related to the board. I put the 1.3 ROM back and no errors, regular boot screen.

Just a little word of warning,,, i was upgrading my kick start under the slight influence of alcohol ( always makes my wanna fiddle with my miggy! ). Anyway, to cut a long story short, i took the kicker ( i think it was 2.04), and put it in the miggy, (lineing up pin 1 with the ° mark on the rom holder.. booted up.. and black screen. Then i let my drunken eyes focus on the chip, seems there are more holes than legs on the bloody chip and i was in the wrong one... and.. it got a little hot. Infact, i burned my hand on it. This proberbly has nothing to do with this AT all, just thought i would put it here :-) (thanks to SWAUG for giving me a new kick! ) Anyway, the chip was fried.
Thanks for listening, you were great :-)

I'm probably wrong about this, but, I thought KS3.1 required at least 1 Meg of real chip ram. If this is true, then the 512K in the trap door has to be mapped into chip ram. There are many articles on Aminet detailing how to do this. Beware, some are better than others.
