Title: please help
Post by: Lilkit on June 24, 2003, 06:04:25 PM
I certainly hope you wonderful people here can help me with an interesting problem that I am having.

I recently moved into a larger place and have room to hook up my beloved old A1200 that had been sitting sadly in storage for years.  I'd like to get it online for browsing purposes (over the lan my roommates and I have).

Here is the hardware rundown of my poor old beast:

A1200 w/40mhz '030
16mb fast ram
1gig harddrive
3com Etherlink III Lan PC card
WB 3.1

I know, it's not much to write home about, but it's all I have, other than using my roommates horrible slow PC.

What I need to know, is if this machine is up to the task of browsing the web, email, etc...  If so, can you suggest some freeware/shareware software that I can use to get it online?  I know I will need a tcp/ip stack, browser, email program, etc.

What do you, the afficianado's suggest?  I am working on a VERY tight budget, so please keep that in mind.

All suggestions are appreciated.  :-)

I'd say go for the OS3.9 upgrade, it includes Genesis TCP/IP stack, Aweb browser and whole bunch of other good stuff for your ol' Miggy. IMO that's all you need. Of course you have to have access to CD-ROM to install it.

I bought it right away when I got back from the Darkside and it's money well spent.

Of course you have keep some restrictions in mind, like AGA. I remember I used surf the web in gray when I had my A1200 back in 90's. It was a lot faster and better looking than 64/128/256 colour screens.

But long story short, get the OS upgrade. :)

Good luck with your project and don't be lured by the Darkside.

The OS3.9 idea is a good one, as there are solutions that work, built in.

However if your budget don't even stretch to that, the following are available free:
MiamiDX (http://ftp://de.aminet.net/pub/aminet/comm/tcp/MiamiDx10cmain.lha)
Yam2.4 (http://ftp://de.aminet.net/pub/aminet/comm/yam/YAM24.lha)
Ibrowse demo (http://www.ibrowse-dev.net/resources.php) is available here.
Note, both Miami and Ibrowse are time limited (30 mins IIRC).
There is no hope of regestering Miami, so don't even ask :~/ Ibrowse can be upgraded, just follow the link above. YAM is open source, unrestricted and free.
For help setting it all up Amiga University  (http://www.amigau.com/c-networking/cnhome.html) has links to check. Some are broken, others are a little out of date, but check them out anyway.

Failing that, ask here!!!

Thank you for you assistance, however it seems that fate has other things in mind for my Amiga =(

It is locking up after about 20 minutes no matter what I am doing.  I took the accelerator out and it plays for hours.  Reinstalled it, same thing.  Changed ram, same thing.  Guess it's just old and dying.  Thought about heat, but it never used to do this.

Either way, I have no CD-Rom on my amiga, so no way to install OS3.9, anyhow.  Great idea, though.

Does anyone know of an affordable '040 or better with SCSI, or have one for sale for a stock A1200? =)
