Title: C64 'demo' using the disc drive for sound ?
Post by: ricco32097 on June 27, 2007, 08:29:43 PM
Can anyone remember the demos that would play a song by using the disc drive to create sound? My question is, how much wear and tear did such programs do to the drive head? Also, are there any recordings of these on-line or can it be emulated? Can't really remember how it sounded.

There was once an actual "soundprogram" in the Magic64 Diskmag here in Germany that lets you compose music that was then played by the floppy. After that you needed to recalibrate the drivehead (the Final Cartrige had an option to do this in software) before the floppy could read disks again.

El Condor Pasa played by amiga disk drive (http://eab.abime.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=5186&d=1055105579) (link courtesy of English Amiga Board)

WARNING: It can throw off the floppy drive calibration. At least don't run it often.

I played it so many times on my 1541-II back in ... 1988 I think... never calibrated again and I don't remember I had any problems reading disks.. weird...

I will calibrate it now, just in case!!
