Title: (sold) Anyone in Perth, Australia want Amiga gear?
Post by: Oliver on June 13, 2007, 05:33:58 AM
Hi folks,

I'm leaving the Amiga scene after many years.  I'm trying to fund some new music projects, and just don't use my Amigas much anymore.

ALL offers will definitely be considered:

I have:

A1200HD (with mobo timing revisions already, can't remember HD size), 3.1 ROMs (+3.0).  OS 3.1.
laptop/desktop IDE adapter
Cobra 1230 (w clock, but no MMU or FPU), & I think 16MB RAM,
buffered 2 port IDE interface for 1200
A2000/scsi HD, and some mobo mods (not sure which), w/ ROM kicker (1.3/2.04?? not sure)
2 1080s monitors
serial port midi interface
Music-X II, and Bars 'n Pipes etc
Many floppies with games/apps etc
Various boxed games
Several mice and joysticks
Probably some more stuff that I've forgotten about

Most of the gear is in reasonable condition, but not mint.  Mice and joysticks are worn.  A2000 has had battery removed some time ago, but nothing done to it since, and haven't used it for quite some time.

As I'm aiming to get rid of this stuff, I would like it picked up from my home.  Anyone is welcome to demo the gear prior to taking it.

Hopefully it will go to a good home.

Cheers,

Oli

edit - The gear is now spoken for.  Thanks guys.

Hey, im from Melbourne.

Dont get too excited, im already feeling a little rude about this post...

I guess it depends how much you wanna get rid it, really...

I recently built my PC for $800

2048mb ram
512mb videocard
E6420 dualcore CPU
etc

now your amiga has 16MB ram... what would i expect to pay for that upgrade, i ask myself?

well... going by the only spec i understand...

its got 16mb ram... thats 128 times less than my $800 brand new PC...

So for 128 times less hardware 'power', youd expect to pay 128 times less money, right? $6.25!

But then... its old, worn and unsupported. I'd never find anywhere to replace something if it broke.

And the shipping costs would be greater than $6.25!

So why am i interested at all? Just wanted to play totalchaos not on an emulator. And i guess i have many, many old floppies *somewhere* that might bring a trip down memory lane too.

i had an A1000 then an A2000-1mb as a kid, which i loved, but ive been a PC boy now since Mechwarror 2 came out.

Anyways, if youre going to throw it out or something drastic ill pay the shipping costs and all that...

Just out of curiosity, what were you looking for as a price?

its a computer id like to have, but cant really see it as a viable purchase with when 1GB DDR2@667MHz = $46

(QFT = 1G-667 Generic /Transcend /Kingston 45 / 45 / 48)

so yeah. what are your thoughts? =)

@jimeh
u better stick with your pc if u gonna compare it with an amiga
the set he offers is at least 200 euro worth
thats even a mild price i think
watch ripoff bay for some prices and then think off only paying shipping

a normal price for this i guess is $250 - $350.... its maybe dated but still a popular computer, you will be abel to find and replace broken things for the amiga, thats no problem. to compare a pc from 2007 and a amiga from 1994 isnt fair i would say...

I'll sell you my 1997 Ford Escort for 50.000 Euro then, it's got 10% of the power of a Bugatti Veyron (worth 2 million), so when it would be new, it would have costed you 200.000, but I'll take off 75% since it's 10 years old.

Seriously, what were you doing here again?

I'm curious too. Why did you bother to sign up if you don't like Amigas?

man, dont know what to offer... or even how much it would cost to ship over to NZ...

But tempted on the a1200 with the expansion card etc, would work great for games :D

haha comparing it with pc specs ?! Get real man, if you check ebay you can see how much it goes for...

Against my better judgment....

@ venco, krize, flashlab

Well, you guys prove that having an Amiga does not make you cool...

@flashlab
dude... what word did i use to describe my fondness for the 2 amigas i had from childhood? it was LOVE.

@venco
im trying to score a cheap amiga1200, wtf are you doing?

@krize
yeah... a Hertz is still a cpu cycle, right? a byte is still 8 bits, am i wrong? so its unfair cos PC parts blow amiga parts out of the water? pfffft

Im still here, using my uber PC, trying to sort myself an amiga. You should be proud of what im doing. insted you're nothing but bitter... clinging to shattered dreams, the past... or maybe youre just too {bleep}ing cheap to upgrade.

im an OLDSCHOOL amiga user. I have a collection of crack mods, ffs. over 1000 700kb floppies. i moved with technology. You aint going nowhere.

@jimeh

Total Chaos plays like crap on an emulator, you've got that right.  And you'll need at least 32 megs of fast RAM to get the latest version to work also.

We are trying to work on something for the emulators though.  It's just hard to find a PC that runs natively at 640x512 resolution.

If all you want is cracks, you can probably play them on WinUAE just fine.  If the A1200 doesn't work out for you then you can always buy a Catweasel floppy controller for your PC and then you'll be able to read the 880k floppies just fine under WinUAE.

Amigas may not be very cool any more but the sad part of it is that Windows requires such astronomical amounts of resources just to get the same level of performance Amiga got out of next-to-nothing.  Except for 3d stuff that requires a big processor to do all the extra maths, Amiga still does surprisingly well on very little.

 Maybe going nowhere, but we have and use those not that-old technology (for a base of comparison, an used pegasus I board worth more than 500 grants on Ebay, using PPC only solution, no customs chips).

 Total Chaos IS a superb game, go for it. I play it almost every day! In the Amiga, never in a dammed pc-box.

 I still use a 1200-030-128Mb Fast-SCSI-IDE43Gb-CDRW-Ethernet-WebBrowser-Mailer-MuchOtherThingsToMentionHere old crappy computer today! Yes I notice the 030 is not the up-to-date processor, sheeeeeeesh!

 Windoz box sucks! If we have DVD author tools and good Video3D accelerators in the Amiga, we don't bother to haven't a B.Gaytes box around in the house.

 Yes! We spend a lot of cash in a "dead" computer hardware, but (believe me), no other computer give me the comfort of use than an Amiga give to me. Nor the fun.

 300 bucks for start is an ultrageous price, the lot worths more than this. I never sell my "crappy" 1200 desktop (with 128Mb RAM!)for less than US$500.00 (without monitor), imagine my towered 1200/Mediator one...

Well, I didn't quite expect this discussion to prop up in this thread.

I didn't realise anyone could feel my post was rude.  Oh well, I'm not bothered.

@Jimeh, if you haven't bought any Amiga gear recently, then you may not be aware that it can still fetch a price out of proportion to its vintage, simply because there are enough people who still like to use it.  It's a market, albeit a small one.  If the gear were currently manufactured, then your argument would certainly make a lot of sense to me.  Having said that, I'm not trying to get the highest possible price for my gear.

I'm in no hurry to sell my gear, and I'm also not looking to make a profit.  However, I don't have much time to conduct a sale either, so would really like it if there is someone in Perth who is interested, and can come and pick it up from my house.

I was thinking around $AU100.00 for the lot would be good.  If it's worth that much to someone in Perth, great.  But hey, all offers are considered.  If someone really wants me to post a component elsewhere, I would consider it, but nothing that's going to take me a lot of time.

Thanks for reading, and I hope someone is interested.

Currently writing this on a XP3400 mate. Sure, not the latest but I'm not stupid enough to buy a new PC every three months.

Apparently you don't understand the fact that we use Amigas for the FUN that it gives us. Not because we think they are way better than modern x86 machines. Using an Amiga is just like owning a classic car. It's not as fast as a new car, not as safe as a new car, spare parts are expensive, it breaks down more often sometimes and you need to have quite some knowledge to keep it running, but it's far more FUN than just driving a brand new boring Toyota Corolla..

So when you come in, laughing at the Amiga and thinking you can have one for free, we shove you back to your little pc corner to think again.
Title: Re: Anyone in Perth, Australia want Amiga gear?

@ jimeh

So we're proof that owning an Amiga doesn't make one cool? I never said I was cool but you being all OLSCHOOL makes you sure sound very cool!

You're obviously easily offended. That was never my intention. Like I said I'm just curious. You're here because you just want to play one game and brag about your PC? That precious PC that can't play TotalChaos to you liking so that you may need to buy the real thing? Then it all boils down to one thing; if the Amiga is LOVE to you, how much are you prepared to pay?

Oh and saying all Amiga users are going nowhere; that's really oldschool 90's BS. Where did you get the impression the only computer I have is an Amiga?

The best part though in your post is about us being too cheap to upgrade. You just offered peanuts for an Amiga (LOVE remember?) and we are cheap? HAHAHAHA LOL :lol:  :lol:  :lol:  :lol:

I can go to work now with a smile, thanks!

I still don't quite know how my post came accross as rude.  Maybe the subject line made the impression that I was giving my gear away?  Probably a bad choice of words on my part.

Anyway, the buyer seems happy with the price, and I'm happy, so I guess that's all that counts in the end.  I'll give him a chance for a demo prior to buying the gear, and we'll take it from there.

As for the whole Amiga market thing, the only way these machines would be worth peanuts, is if no one wanted them.  In that case, sites like this probably wouldn't exist, and machines would be thrown away.  Really, the inflated market is a sign of the main positive aspect to the Amiga: it still has a following.  So, always a tradeoff somewhere.

Most likely I'll still be visiting this forum, even when I'm Amigaless.  I still like the machines, and I like the community here too.

Cheers guys.

No, sorry Oliver, you misunderstand.

I mean MY post was rude offering you next to nothing for your extensive and well loved collection of Amiga hardware. Still, no harm in offering the kit a new, loving home, i say! =)

What did you end up getting for it, just to give me a better picture of the 'market', if you don't mind me asking?

Take it easy man.

@rest of ya

I am easily offended by flamers. No one needed to reply to my query but oliver. I offered an option better than the bin.

Why even bother posting in here if you're not making a bid/offer?

My guess was that you're bored and in need of entertainment - thats why I replied at all, against better judgment, as i said. And I'm happily proven right by that smile on your face heading to work.
