Title: This has to be a joke?
Post by: mel_zoom on June 09, 2007, 12:37:23 PM
From the bbc news website -

"Many British people are unaware that the ingredients for produce such as bacon, porridge, bread and beer come from farms, a survey suggests."

Here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6731659.stm)

How can such a large proportion of people in a first world country with free access to education be so ignorant of something so obvious?

 I couldn't believe it myself when I read that in the Paper today, who on earth did they ask? 3 year olds?

The article is very poorly written.
Nowhere does it say what questions were actually asked.
For example, you could ask where bacon comes from. The answer could be a choice between a)pigs or b)farms.
The resulting stats could feasibly be used to imply ignorance.

Having said that, I would not be in the least surprised if the stats turn out to be robust. We are a country of many, many incurious idiots.

You do notice the large amount of chavs don't you? :-P

Part of that page says 16-24 year olds.  If that applies to the main question aswell then that's the reason right there.  If they included adults of 30 or over then the result would be drastically different.

Not surprising to me at all.  Most of them are too busy with their trendy mobile phones speaking to Chantelle or Wayne about their new Ford Escort/fake orange tan/new bird they're shagging.

Depressing if there is any accuracy, but not surprising.

@Karlos
I thought of that after posting.  Shame that Wayne is a chav name now.  Along with Darren.

I know a Wayne that lives round here and he's got a chav haircut but that's it.  He's a pure classic Dundonian :-D

Blimey, you must have a higher class of chav up there.  The chavs round here shop at Aldi/Lidl/Netto/Kwiksave. ;-)

Well, we don't have an Aldi (well, I haven't seen one here anyways), we have a few Lidls but Tesco is always nearby and Kwiksave's have declined here.  Same with Iceland.  We do have a few Farmfoods though.

You should see the chav Asda we have in the Kirkton area here.  You can't move for the buggers.  I'm sure Kirkton is the local sex spot for chavs.  And because it's filled with chavs no-one else wants to live there.

Everything is cheap in Asdas aswell.  About the same price as Lidls but with a bigger selection.  And Asda sell baby stuff, Lidls don't ;-)

Now that that's been said you'd better make sure you get commission when they do start selling them.

Text messages sent to me using that irritating, over-contracted text message language are immediately deleted from my phone with no response. If people want to communicate with me then they can write properly. I don't see why I should waste my time attempting to decipher their incomprehensible gibberish.

I thought it was just me that hated the incomprehensible gibberish in text messages :pissed:

I bought a PS2 last week as Blockbuster are selling them cheap now that the PS3 has been released. I've just sent a text message to the mobile number of someone in our local paper, asking them what the 10 PS2 games are that they are selling for £30.

A reply has come back:-

"Sal wat fsn butt ug mart red f eden lord ring 2t mouse pol nfl 2k3 antz ww racing endgam"

Erm... Can anyone decipher that for me? :headwall:

red f - Red Faction
Lord Ring 2t - Lord of the Rings The Two Towers
nfl 2k3 - NFL 2003
antz - erm... Antz

No idea about the rest though.

My txting isn't as bad as that, I atleast use commas, periods, dashes etc.

Predictive text is always on on my phone, but it takes too long to come up with what I'm wanting to type so I very rarely use it.

It's got to wait about 2 seconds after each letter is typed before it suggests the wrong word :-P

Motorola V220.

Only had a Phillips, Nokia and now a Motorola phone in 8 years.  This is the only one that I can't switch off predictive text.
