I upload a little video of my A1 running Amiga OS4 Final Release in Youtube.
Comments welcome.

well ubuntu looks way better than os4. I though I was going to fall asleep.
-
So you mean you're all excited about an OS which so far runs a chat client, an email program, an MP3 player, a DVD player and a dated browser? I can't make out what that last program was---some sort of 'windowed' Workbench. I am so impressed that I am going to ditch my PC right away and buy an A1 with AOS 4.
-
I don't fell the speed at all... :-o
And the StarWars opening is flashing and is not smooth at all...
-
@CLS2086
Chrisot's video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yk9LMdEof-A&mode=related&search=) from way back when seems to be faster. Not sure if you'll appreciate the photo at 4:59 though.
-
Ah, this crisot video? (http://www.iki.fi/sintonen/pics/Crisot_is_a_pirate.jpg)
-
I didn't see a speed problem. Maybe i got lucky and got a good connection to it. Anyways not bad, not quite that impressive, but not bad.
-
going to fall asleep
eh?... what's that?? Sorry, guess I feel asleep reading your post, or waiting for XP to boot on my dual core.
@Cloone
Thanks for the effort. Your presentation could use a bit of polishing and better focus though.
BTW, the video speed was fine for me. Some of you need to upgrade your 2400 baud modems. :-D

It was okay, but could have been alot better if you edited out the parts where nothing happened. And i would personally choose a different set of programs, like for example the rss one could have been dropped, as it is not really one of the programs that showcases the responsiveness of the OS.
-
well Amiga OS 4 looks way better than ubuntu . I thought I was going to wake up.
:-D

The first comment under the you-tube video was so venomous, it was comical. This video was hastily put together because some people were begging for a video of OS4.0 final update. It's recoded with a camcorder, slightly out of focus, and then compressed like crazy with a lossy codec. Analysing stuff too much would be like telling someone their camera is crap after looking at highly compressed JPEGs.
Where do people get the idea from that it's really slow and unresponsive? The Xnet progress bar? That's progress for downloading RSS feeds via the internet, which is limited by the server's response time. How about loading times? Once processors are above a certain level in processing power, the bottleneck becomes the speed of the drive themselves (usually, even the IDE bus is faster that the drive).
Regarding the star wars intro flashing and not being smooth, it looks a bit like the camera is trying to adjust its focus and exposure settings. However, let me assure you that I can watch (encrypted) DVDs no problem with no frame skipping, and still have processing power left over to do other things.
I think that the final app is a VNC client connecting to a Linux machine of some sort (might even be Ubuntu :-P). Hence the jerky screen updates. At least that's what it looks like to me.
The video may not show it, but I've never seen IBrowse render pages so quickly, or scroll so smoothly as on my A1, and that's running under 68k emulation. The OS definitely is fast and responsive. I don't have those random momentary pauses like I have on my win-xp machine when it's doing goodness knows what in the background.

Well I only have OS3.9 on a 68K & OS4.0 looks pretty fast & slick!
Whats with the long live XP brigade Bill Gates love child perhaps?
-
Well, I enjoyed watching it, thanks.
Especially the speed of TwinVNC seemed nice, altough that says more about the A1 than the OS itself.
Can anyone show a video were the OS runs classic 680x0 software such as Imagine or other heavy task ?

LMAO, Yeah, after loading security apps, download managers, updaters, smart fan & cpu controls, virtual drives etc. I'm far too sleepy to actualy use my 4200 X2.
:lotsacoffee: while I wait.
...and as for the video...man, some people on this forum are just mean, give the guy some credit for trying to promote the platform and before being too critical ask yourselves: What did I do for the Amiga today?

what? in amigaland and with all trolls around?
aren't you asking too much?
-
@FR: YUP!!
I would love to get my hands on an OS4 machine while it's still active. I waited far too long to actually "get into" my 68k Amiga systems. Try registering Miami in the past four years or so since Holger went to REBOL.
I like that many of the classic elements are still present in the new system.
-
i've got a good internet connection so the you tube vid shows OS4 running it's normal fast self.
however, it would help to have audio or some other means to indicate What is going on.
it's good that you show a couple of movies running at the same time. At the meeting I attend we have run about 4 movies at once - now THAT really gets people's attention!
you should also show programs that really are visual like ZonExplorer. I believe that runs under petunia, but it still works fine and it's Very Visual. not to mention beautiful. Always a good thing when you are trying to impress people. :-D
Show a PDF. The lastest version for OS4 that I have seens looks quite good and if I recall, works fast.
run an image processing program. That is Very resource intensive and helps to show what is possible.
pulling the screen down and showing another screen is VERY good! Even better would be to show Several screens and Keep Pulling more down - THAT is what blows people's minds!
I know it's not always easy to add audio, but if you can't do that you will have to add Titles or Captions to let the view know what is happening.
good effort!

Some people are easy to impress, I guess.

I had tried to view the video and the other on another thread and don't show it with Ibrowse and the youtube scripts
I downloaded for this.
How can I view the video on the Amiga One?
OS 4.0 update 4 is cool.
How can it be the final version?

Due to Hyperions greed.

OS 4 is out? Wow! I feared it was never going to happen!
The video is so out of focus I can't see anything.

Does "Amiga" mean only properly licensed hardware and software that doesn't violate any Trademarks?

For my opinion, the fact that it does or doesn't violate the trademark isn't that important for what could be called an Amiga. And yes, not everyone here shares your same view on what is an Amiga and what not.

So are you like me and consider both AROS and MorphOS as much "Amiga" as Hyperions OS?

So you are like me and consider both AROS and MorphOS as much "Amiga" as Hyperions OS?
I don't have any problems with that, and I respect also who has different opinions on that. I also respect negative comments on some particular "types" of Amigas. What I find annoying though is the heavy sarcasm some like to use to express their negative opinions, it always makes me feel like "your opinion/taste/preference is wrong, mine is correct". Hence my comment.

It's not. There's OS4 final update, which comes after that one. Log in to Hyperion's website to download it.

I guess you didn't watch the video or see an AmigoONE with OS4.
this is one of those features that Amigas can do. Sorry it doesn't make you happy.
It makes me wonder whay you are here......

What exactly is so special about it these days?
I am currently as i am writing this running 4 xvid movies at once using xine under ubuntu. All videos are running perfectly smooth.. It was indeed impressive in the beos days, but not anymore, at least not when compared to linux. I dont know how Windows handles this task though.

Get out of town! ;-)
Which Windows are you talking about? 3.1 on a 486 or summat? Seriously, I don't even use windows other than at work and I wouldn't make baseless claims like that. Windows cannot do many things but lets be honest about what it can and can't do.
It makes me wonder whay you are here......
Probably because he know more about the internals of the Amiga OS than anyone else in this sorry "community" we are part of I guess.
-

That's ridiculous claim. Windows has absolutely NO problem whatsoever to play multiple (say 10) movies.
I'll get some nice screenshot made once I'm back home.
this is one of those features that Amigas can do.
Frankly, screen dragging is boring and slow way to do anything usable. It's much faster to cycle thru all the screens with say MMB.

Oh, I like Amigas alright. I liked my 500 and 4000 a great deal, in fact. Nowadays, I like them in perspective. The OS is nice and simple and provides a good illustration of many modern multitasking features. When I'm battling with tricky features in Linux I usually look up how it's done on the Amiga first. Of course the two systems are not really comparable, but I find learning by analogy works very well in this case.
Modern Amigas are a waste of time, effort and money, in my book. It's all in the software these days, and what has been done on the Amiga can easily be duplicated on different platforms. In fact, the Amiga is now duplicating what other people have done on other platforms. I cannot be impressed by such activities, really.
-
I am gonna fire up my winxp laptop and test the claim that it is not able to run multiple videos at once.
Edit: 3 wmv files with fairly good quality was playing back just fine in wmp classic. I saw zero dropped frames or slowdowns and it used around 80-90% cpu. 4 movies at once would result in 100% cpu usage and slowmotion playback, but this can be explained by the fact that all these movies were in mpeg4 and in fairly ok res. I am sure i could have thrown up more videos if it was vcd/mpeg1 movies.
To those who have problems doing the same:
Make sure your graphic driver is up2date and that you are not using the default vesa driver that comes with WinXP. I have seen alot of people who just install XP and just use the graphic driver that windows installs for you, which is not optimal at all and will even slow down simple things like scrolling a window, web browser or similar.
Though, even though it aint impressive compared to modern systems/OS, i think it was still very good that it was included in the video, so that one can see that AmigaOS multitasks well.
-
Anyone doing the test: Make sure you use some low bitrate clip, similar that was used on the amiga demo. It's quite pointless to compare some divx and HDTV playback.
-
I am currently as i am writing this running 4 xvid movies at once using xine under ubuntu. All videos are running perfectly smooth..
I'm currently checking out ubuntu as a replacement for my red hat multi-boot system.
it sure looks very nice. I don't care if it's possible to play multiple movies, but if it can get online, i'll be happy.
-
windows can't play four moviews at once. so, yes, that's impressive.
Windows playing 10 movies, with 12% CPU usage (http://www.iki.fi/sintonen/pics/tenmovies.jpg)
Oh, and this is while playing the movies over network samba mount.
Scaling up: I could play 70-80 movies on my Windows boxen.
-
Here some more screenshots:
Xubuntu playing 5 movies (http://members.chello.nl/a.salis/xfce.png)
and
MorphOS playing 4 movies (http://members.chello.nl/a.salis/mos.png)
Nothing special for most OS's :-P
Edit:
I cheated a little bit on MOS, I paused the movies to take a screenshot because CPU load was 100% with all movies playing. However they played fine.
And in fact there are 5 movies playing but only 4 showing because the first movie was played with overlay and as such only displays a black screen if you take a screenshot. It's hidden behind the tsunami.avi.
-
piru,
Windows playing 10 movies, with 12% CPU usage
Yeah, but the claim was that Windows can't play FOUR (4) movies at once! Must be something magical about the number four that nobody else knows about.
-
One thing a PC can't do is to give the same pleasure you get when sitting behind an amiga. Don't let others ruin it with their mind boggingly opinions you don't care about in the first place.
-
Had to try. I just ran five movies at the same time without any slowdown in the system nor in the videos. And I am running this on a crappy Dell with the worst integrated gfxcard in the history of computers :)
