Title: Shapeshifter and Mac OS
Post by: AmigaPixel on June 04, 2007, 10:42:01 AM
Hello all,

I was thinking back when I used the Mac emulater Shapeshifter and Mac OS 7.1 on my A1200 a few years ago. I haven't used it in over 5 years. What is the last version of Shapeshifter and what version of Mac OS can you get for it? Where can you get it? Thanks :-D

You can use MacOS up to version 8.1 officially. I got it to run 8.0 but 8.1 doesn't fully boot. Probably some config mistake I made.

You can download version 7.5.3 on the Apple site for free and update that to 7.5.5. Newer version you have to buy. If you do so make sure it is a generic version and not for one model specific!

last version of Shapeshifter was 3.11 IIRC, which was the free version, and last to be developed.

Shapeshifter 3.11 is on Aminet. I found MacOs 7.6.1 somewhere in the net, it was about 9 MB, zipped hfv.

Mac OS 8.1 works fine with ShapeShifter 3.11 (even without a 68040 processor but this requires a bit of hackery to do); to use higher versions of Mac OS you need to use an emulator like iFusion with a PPC accelerator card. - With classic Amigas that is; can't answer with regards to AmigaOS 4.

I have tried MacOS v7.5 (i can't remember the exact revision) with the latest ShapeShifter and i was disappointed by the slowliness of the whole emulation but especially the of graphics, although i'm using a gfx card with CGFX v4!... :-(
Would MacOS 8 run any faster? Are there any good tip to speed things up? (except of reducing the resolution/color depth, which is obvious)

I never got 8.1 to boot under Shapeshifter on my 060 machine. Could you post your Shapeshifter config as I have a boxed copy of 8.1 I would really like to use.

No.

MMU aided graphics driver can help. See CardTrickEVD (http://aminet.net/package/misc/emu/CardTrickEVD)

Yes, at least with a 060 it's twice faster than any MAC. Also WinnerEVD and driver for Picasso cards were quite nippy.

In this topic I tested some different external drives and internal drivers for ShapeShifter:

Summary is that direct P96 works best for me.

I have a Cybervision64/3D with CGX4 on OS3.9.

Can shapeshifter support this graphics card?

Thanks everyone, This wil be a fun project among other projects. I wanted to mainly play with the Mac OS on my amiga again. However I don't know what applications to try on the Mac. I use Photoshop on the pc. Any suggestions? I should point out that this will be on an A2000 with an 030. When I had my A1200, I was running it on an 060. Oh why did I sell it. :-( Oh well at least I hung on to my A2000.

You could try some games (Warcraft I) and webbrowsing (Netscape and iCab)? Would be a bit slow though...
