Title: CD install on 4000
Post by: frl9lk on May 31, 2007, 10:37:40 PM
I swapped out the flaky HD on my 4000. DOS 3.1.
But I can't reinstall the CD using ASIM cd 3.1. Even tried a different CD unit. Any ideas?

Saying you can't do it doesn't give us much to go on. What have you tried, and what happened?

I would make sure the jumpers are set correctly.  Is it the same CD as before and did it work?  Sounds like a jumper problem or the drive is not compatible with the CD-ROM... Try another drive.

I set the jumpers on the new drive (Quantum Fireball SE) to master, the jumper on the CD ROM to slave (older LG) I've tried it as a SCSI (scsi.device with an open ID) and as an ATAPI (asim_ide.device at 0). In either case, with both the original CD ROM and the "new" one I get an alert window on startup -- Window header: ASIMCDFM configuration... and in the window: "unable to open CD0:"

Please tell me on any further details that would be helpful. (The same install procedure worked fine on my 2000.)

I would get IDEFix97 for ATAPI drives, it works great.  You cannot use scsi.device with 3.1

@TjLaZer
AsimCDFS has it's own device driver and works great with both A1200 and A4000's scsi.device under OS3.0/3.1.

@frl9lk If the drive is slave then should it not have ID 1 as I'm pritty sure master is ID 0.

If i remember correctly with idefix 97 there is a program included to scan all the devices, there you can see on wich unit and device your cd rom is present.

@PPC

Same goes for AsimCDFS, it includes an SCSI inquier tool (also working with scsi.device on A1200/4000 if my memory serves me right) that not only tell you the ID of the drives on a selected controller but also manufacturer, drivename and firmware for these drives.

Spot on mate. It's called FindDevice :-)

The CD should be at asim_atapi.device, unit 1. Also consider getting a newer version of Asim. 3.1 is very old; 3.10 turns up on eBay fairly often.

Thanks all. But I am frustrated. IFEfix97 apparently needs an updated Installer("can't find the installer tool"). The updated Installer apparently needs an updated lharc (LHArchie), which in turn needs an updated installer (InstallerNG). I'm chasing my own tail.

Also -- I do have Asim 3.10 -- I just read the v number as decimal.

I have rechecked the jumpers. The HD is both Master/Master w Slave and the CD drive is Slave.

Relax...

This (http://aminet.net/package/util/arc/lha_68k) version of LHA you should be able to extract with your current one. Put the appropriate processor version in C: as LhA

Here's (http://aminet.net/package/util/misc/Installer-43_3) a good version of Installer. Once extracted, copy the file Installer to C: and SYS:Utilities

But ASIM should be working with that setup. Maybe just run its installer again; I think it's a much better CDFS than the one included in IDEFix.

THANK YOU for your help. I believe the problem was a bad copy of asimcdfs -- though it's a legit disk. The Scsi Inquire just hangs. Ignoring it worked for my 2000 -- I had to use IDEfix for the 4000. Learned a bunch. Thanks again.

I never got ASIM CDFS to work with ATAPI drives, only SCSI.

One last question... How do I register IFEfix97? The email address seems to be dead, and the hyper-intrusive pop-ups are a bit much.
