Title: A1200: Commodore or Escom?
Post by: jbuonacc on May 28, 2007, 05:04:46 AM
i've got two A1200's here and was thinking about selling one of them. one is an original Commodore model with 'A1200' badge and KS 3.0 installed. the other is an Escom 'A1200HD' with KS 3.1 roms. both are in very nice physical and working condition, though the original HD for the Escom model has died. i do actually have a spare Commodore A1200 case that's in mint condition, so i could swap the guts of either one into that if i wanted. any thoughts on which i should hold onto and for what reason? is the original better?

both have a 4mb expansion installed, i just need to figure out which would be better of the two to keep.

also, are floppy disk drives compatible between the A1200 and an A500?

thanks!

Floppy diskdrivers are compatible between all Amiga models. What motherboard revisions do they come with?

IIRC Escom used PC floppy drives..

Escom used PC floppy drives and modified the A1200's mainboard to facilitate these foreign drives. (And they weren't 100% compatible)

Drives between the A500 and A1200 (C= models) are technically compatible, but likely the A500 drive won't physically fit in the A1200.

hmm, so any opinion as to which would be better to hang on to (mainly regarding the electronics)? not sure yet on the motherboard revisions, i'll have to open them up. i'm actually just going to maybe set them aside for now and look into them in a month or two when i have more time. i'd really like to keep both of them if i can.

jbuonacc,

escom A1200 motherboards have been modified to support pc floppy drives however lot of floppy games not works there cause that modification....there are a hardware hack fix on aminet for that but I recommend you to keep with the original A1200 motherboard of course...

Insert 3.1 roms on the commodore'A1200  motherboard and keep with that

makes good sense, thanks! did any Escom models ship with 3.0 roms, i don't want to pass it off as something less than it is if i sell it.

escom A1200 were made on the years 95,96 and 97 and all ships 3.1 roms...anyways if you wanna sell one but with 3.0 roms it's legal cause it's a working computer and the user who purchase that can upgrade later to 3.1 roms if necesary

bye, Laser
