Title: Anyone else got a GP2X?
Post by: Nycran on May 22, 2007, 02:24:38 PM
Hi all, I picked up a shiny new GP2X last week (it was my birthday), and naturally one of the first things I tried was running the UAE emulator.  It actually works reasonably well, and I was able to enjoy Speedball 2 (without sound) & Barbarian!  Having a little portable Amiga in your hands is pretty damn cool.

Anyone else got one?

I was thinking of getting one but got a Nintendo DS instead. I still might get a GP32 if the Amiga emulator runs well :-)

I would buy it if it ran at full a500 speed with non choppy sound emulation.

To be honest, UAE on the gp2x is not perfect at the moment, although it's getting better.  Speedball 2 requires the sound to be turned off otherwise it has random freezes (unsure if this is a problem on Windows?).

Overall though the system is super cool, not to mention the guys on the GP2X forum are friendly and theres a good fun atmosphere.  No one seems to regret their purchase.  In addition to Amiga, you can emulate Atari (2600, 7800, Atari St), Vic 20, Commodore 64, Megadrive, MAME, and many others.  It's like the ultimate retro gaming device in your hands.

Note: The GP32 is the old system, the GP2X is the new (go figure!).  See: www.gp2x.com

It is pretty cool.  I have a few quibbles with the design, particularly with the joystick which feels a little clumsy at times, but overall I'm very happy with it.  It's providing some excellent late night entertainment.  If you do a search for GP2X on youtube you'll see some videos of it in action.

I've got one too - and no regrets, it's a great piece of kit!

Sadly there isn't much activity with the Amiga emulation at the moment - are the guys still actively developing it?

I know UAE4all is a port from the Dreamcast but not sure if its still being updated and UAE2x also hasn't been updated for a while.

As things stand the emulator is its still very cool - workbench 1.3 is the best option though and yes, sound is pretty dodgy. Wish work was continuing on the emulators - I'd gladly donate to get things moving faster.

I want SWOS handheld!

I have one, had it for about a year now, if you're an emulation nut or retro gamer, this machine is awesome, go get one - full stop!

UAE4all needs a little tweaking to get the most out of it, I have many A500 games working at full tick, with sound, with the GP2X clocked at 250-266Mhz.

@Nycran,

Make sure you have the virtual device input (start button) set to -joystick only- to stop those freezes during Speedball2.  And you -can- have sound during play, just set the CPU<->Chipset slider all the way to CPU, sound = faked, overclock = 250+ and frameskip = 3-4 or Auto.

Try UAE4all-tweak for slightly better performance.

Enjoy.

You forgot to point out that the megadrive emulator comes with support for Mega CD games.

GP2X is an excellent handheld and unlike the PSP and DS it is an open system so al the emulators can be played straight away without having to mess about with firmware or buying extra hardware. Also when your at home you can plug it into your TV. Also you can buy extra hardware to plug in usb devices such as keyboard and joysticks.

At the moment the Amiga emulation isnt great but there is interest for it on the 2x's forums and the developer doses say he hasnt stopped working on it he has just put it on a back bench while he does some other things.

So to all those wondering if its worth getting one my answer is Yes
