Title: Putting a 2.5" HD on my A1200
Post by: ptek on May 19, 2007, 04:01:33 PM
Hi all

Currently I have a A1200 which I must say I don't boot for at least one year due lack of space on the room mostly.

The other reason is that my currently HD become temperamental, maybe due to improper power wiring. That is, it's a 3.5" old HD connected to the 2.5" slot by a cheesy homemade cable but the power is taken from somewhere else (I think it's shared from the floppy power... i'm not sure).
Anyway, the 3.5" HD is fine since when I connect to the IDE of my PC is starts to spin and it's acessible under WinUAE.

So, back into subject, since 2.5" HD are relatively cheap and quiet nowadays i'm thinking of buying a 20GB or 40GB seagate model (i don't any of that need huge space!) and fit it inside de A1200.

So my question is : will I need any cable for power or the cable from Amikit like this ( here (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=365&osCsid=5b590784241035bde0d1ceac396178a4)) will do the work ?

My other option would be a SD card to IDE adapter but i'm still investigating this here on the several amiga.org threads.

Since the 2.5" drives takes the power from the ide cable you don't need anything else than the cable you linked to from amigakit.

But do you still have the harddrive cradle? Like this (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=184&osCsid=5b590784241035bde0d1ceac396178a4) one?

It's a good idea not to let the harddrive float around.

Well I'm not sure... I think i don't.
So that also raises a question : is that cradle supports current 2.5" drives ?
I realised that nowadays 2.5" HD are slimmer than old ones ...

yes and no;

yes, the drive being slimmer is not a problem just make sure it has the 44 pin ide interface and not some modern sata thing.

no, the holes are in the wrong place. Not to worry it can be fixed;
paint the metal around the holes on the drive and press the drive on the bracket while the paint is still wet.
Now you know where to drill the holes. Piece of cake.

Good luck.

If you buy a drive+bracket from us, we can pre-drill the bracket on your request at time of ordering.

With no additional cost ? :)

Anyway, I think drilling will not be a problem to me.

BTW : Maybe I'll go for the

4-Device Buffered IDE Interface (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=532&osCsid=5b590784241035bde0d1ceac396178a4)

As far I understood, this replaces the simple 2.5" cable and gives further expansability and buffered transfer which is an extra.

Is the IDEfix97 in the Aminet fully freeware or does it need any registration in order to unlock any features ?

I got that device in my a1200, and I am very happy with it.
I currently use that unregistered idefix97 from aminet, it works and good and all, but it keeps poping up with a box reminding you to register it all the time.

So currently I manualy mount the cdrom when I need to access a cd, but I will register it some day.

the 4-Device Buffered IDE Interface allows the HD to remain inside the A1200 right? That's one of the reasons I have to buy a 2.5" drive.
