Title: Rs232 servers...
Post by: ravnen on May 02, 2007, 10:16:58 PM
Okay, blame the  :pint:

But there is a few cool games that offers multiplayer thru the serialport.

Would it be possible to use two RS232 to Ethernet converters, setup a connection thru the internet (setting the necessary NAT rules etc), and play it that way?

That would be so cool (and expencive, but hey it would be cool!) :P

Anyone tried something like this?

I found one box here (http://scmstore.com/english/IPControl/Telnet/default.asp)  Would be 2x$99.95 (but hey, the $ is worth nothing now so :P)

You can also use two MicroTelnet devices to create an internet bridge between two serial devices.

i wouldn't trust the whole via the internet thing...if i were to do the above, i'd set up a vpn and pretend it's going across the lan

heh, how mutch damage can anyone do if they gain access to the amigas serial port, when its in a game?

I dont think thats the #1 target, and if so, I cannot imagine what they would be able to do. Setup a spam server over rs232? Yey :P

You might be able to get multiplayer games working over TCP/IP with Kaillera (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaillera). Should be baked into WinUAE.

How-to. (http://kaillera.abime.net/docs/index.html)

i meant i wouldn't trust it to work over the internet.

Not a bad idea.

The easiest solution (and the cheapest one) is probably to have a PC do all the networking.  Connect the Amiga to your PC, initiate the connection using a homebrew program, and start playing.

Amiga #1 <-> PC <-> {internet} <-> PC <-> Amiga #2

Reading and writing to the serial port is no biggie, and keeping a TCP connection (or maybe just settling with UDP packets) is pretty trivial too.

Ofcourse, you have to take account for network lag.  I have no idea how it will behave in real life.

@skurk

somehow I dont think network lag will have any impact on a serial game.

Anyway, using a pc means more cables and configuration and stuff. A hardware box, that I can (hopefully) configure from the miggy is a mutch more apealing idea.

This is something I just have to test :P

Oh well, I assumed most people had a PC :)

Anyway, if everything else fails, here's (http://www.taltech.com/products/tcpcom.html) a serial-to-tcp client/server for Windows that just might do the trick.  The program is a 30-day trial.

I would seriously give that a try before buying any hardware.  Might save you a few bucks.

Well I have a few macs, but all without serialports, so I have to get some usb adapters then.

But I have used this kind of serial servers before, when I attended school we used this devices to communicate with old PLC systems, but then we used pc (with routing software) to serial server, not serialserver to serialserver. But this should not mater.

But I'll check around and see if any of the supplier my company uses has this kind of equiptment, in that case I can borrow a pair to test.

It would be interesting.

Mail to the telnetPro people:

With two TelnetPro boxes, would it be possible to use computer to computer
serialcommunication over internet just as if the computer had a
nullmodem/link cable between them?

I want to be able to play vintage games on vintage computers with friends
over internet. The games is ment to work with a serial link cable between
two computers (standard rs232).
