Title: Maglev debate in Denmark
Post by: Amiduffer on April 24, 2007, 09:18:14 PM
Just curious. For those of you in Northern Germany and Denmark, what do you think about the current discussion of constructing a Maglev train connecting Aarhus and Copenhagen?

Based on the Siemens project with a test track in Northern Germany?

There was a big hubbub in Northern Netherlands about a planned route connecting Groningen to Amsterdam with such a maglev track (and hopefully onto Hamburg) but the whole project fell through, even Germany decided against a Hamburg-Berlin track IIRC due to the huge costs involved. China is the only country having a commercial maglev track I think, although the short length makes it completely useless.

Not sure if this is straying off-topic, but there is a Maglev link through the UK proposed, called UK Ultraspeed.

And here is a map of the proposed route:

I personally think Maglev is a great idea, it's benefits likley to outgun the flaws (mainly initial construction costs) in time.

As for the Denmark plan, it's a shame it didn't go through. And the Shanghai Airport-City Centre maglev link isn't useless because of its short track; it is far quicker at getting into a city like Shanghai than other means. That, and it's operation shows that the technology is feasible.
