Title: CGX4: "Can't open test screen!"
Post by: motorollin on April 23, 2007, 06:04:04 PM
I have just installed CGX4. Now there are no CGX screenmodes in ScreenMode prefs. If I go in to CGXMode and test any of the screenmodes, I get an error saying "Can't open test screen!"

What can I do?

Considering the dozens of threads about this, it's still amazing that some haven't seen the solution being mentioned. :-)

Really? There was a floppy disk with an update which I used when I installed CGX. Is there a more recent update than that?

Either install the latest update for CGX4 or temporarily disable OS3.9's ROM update.

http://phase5.a1k.org/index.php?id=3

It's the new exec.library of OS3.9 BB2 which hides all screen modes in CGX. This is fixed by the CGX update.

Bye,
Thomas

Using nothing but CGX4 and the latest update you're going to run into trouble at some point, moto

Search old threads here and you'll eventually find out

Been thru the CGX+OS3.9 hell/mess when I got my first Amiga gfx card so I'm also speaking from my own experience

Well, I downloaded the latest update (thanks Thomas for the link) and used it to do an update over the top of my CGX3 installation. It works great now! Not really sure what the actual benefits are of CGX4, but RTGMaster works now, both for the test apps and also for Napalm :-D

You used the CGX 4.2r6 update on top of your CGX3 installation?

Yep. When you run the installer it says that it can update a working v3 or v4 installation.

Weird you got it working, it should only work with the original CGX4 cd

Hope you didn't get a broken install now by mixing CGX3 stuff with CGX4 files

but you have ordered the CGX4 cd from Amigakit so if you run into troubles you won't suffer for long   :-)

Perhaps I didn't explain properly. My CGX4 CD arrived today. When I ran the R6 installer it asked for the CD and copied some files from it. So it's not a blend of v3 and v4, it's just an upgrade from v3 to v4. The installer is designed to do this so it's not like I've kludged it :-)
