Title: Who has what Amiga??
Post by: phill25 on April 15, 2007, 10:17:27 PM
I'm just trying to get an understanding of who has what Amiga and why..
Mainly because I'd love to get my Amiga 1200 towered but also consider having an Amiga 4000 as its been something I've always wanted to own and by looking at some of the pics on this forum, my eyes have opened right up and I'm really interested in really going for this :-D

Would anyone like to start the ball rolling for me??

My setup:

A 1200
Blizz PPC 603e+ 210MHz 040 25MHz
64MB ram
BVision gfx- card (currently not working properly)
6GIG Conner HD
ZIP 100 drive
Commodore 1942 monitor
Nokia 44BS 14" monitor
Some kind of tower dont remember the name of it...
----
A500 STD (to be upgraded, slightly. HD and ram,
looking for A530. or of that kind.)
Actionreplay MKII

To be upgraded:
The SCSI cable for ppc scsi (mini 50pin to std 50pin)
CD-rom drive
Some of my other SCSI disks...
Memory, if i can find some more :)
Network
USB
A bigger monitor
Scandoubler

I have had amigas since I was a fist big. (though my first computer were a C64). To me it is the nostalgia. and the fun of using the best OS ever.... Fun though to play the old classic games...

Hmm, got an A4k RBM-towered sitting in the basement. Came with  so many cards that all slots were filled (not easy on a tower conversion  :-o ). Got it quite cheap some years ago, not as cheap the one you are eyeing, but given all the extras it was a sweet deal.

Also sitting there is the trusty A2000 which was my main Amiga for 8 years. Maxed out with a Blizzard2060, but I sold that when I got the A4k (stupid me), now back to it's orginal A2630.

Main "Amiga" is my Pegasos2 which replaced the Pegasos1 some years ago (and is soon to be joined by anoter one).

So yes I'm totally

Well I'm curious as to what way is best to go for me..  As I've said plently of times, I'd love a A4000 in a tower.. My ultimate Amiga goal for damn sure :-)

I've only started using my Amiga 1200 recently and its just great :-)  I have loads of memories of friends playing The Settlers with me and Indyheat, oh my god :-D

I'm just wondering, where can I find a tower for either 1200 or 4000 that's not stupidly expensive??
That is one thing I hate about Amiga's.. People tend to rip you off when selling something :-(  Tis a shame...

Whats a Pegasos 2??  Is that the new hardware for the OS 4?  Its been so long since I've read or heard what the Amiga is doing now, I just prefer to ask!!  Its easier!

I have an A1200 with Blizzard 1230 and SCSI adapter with a 16 meg EDO SIMM.

I also have a MicroA1-c which runs AmigaOS 4 prerelease 2.

And, to answer your other question, there is no version of AmigaOS 4 that runs on the Pegasos 2, it runs an Amiga-clone operating system called MorphOS.

My system:

AmigaOne XE
G4 933 MHz
512M of RAM
Radeon 9200, 256M of memory
Soundblaster PCI128
Thermaltake Extreme Spirit cooler
bigtower case
running AmigaOS4 final

Why? It's one the fastest Amiga ever made (not including emulation, though), no stacks of hardware plugged together, and it runs the best version of AmigaOS I have ever used.

Whats the biggest size piece of ram I can add to my Blizzard 1230?  I was looking at a 128mb simm, is that too much??

Also what is the biggest size hard drive the Amiga 1200 can handle, seen a couple 20Gb units on ebay for about £5, just wondered if it would be worth my while to get one or two??

MorphOS?  Where might I find more information about it please?  Google?

What can it do that a towered 1200 or 4000 (maybe with PPC??) can/cant do??

Where did you buy it from?  What do you use it for?

Sorry for the questions, just really interested :-)

An Introduction to MorphOS (http://www.morphzone.org/modules/IntroToMorphOS)
Wikipedia: MorphOS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MorphOS)
Lots of info at wikipeg.org (http://www.wikipeg.org/) (check out the Pegasos book for example)
MorphOS for PowerUP accelerated Amigas (http://powerup.morphos-team.net)

Oh I have:

Pegasos II
7447 (G4) at 1 GHz
1GB of RAM
120GB + 200GB IDE HDDs
ATI Radeon 8500LE, 64M of memory
NEC USB 2.0 PCI card
Running MorphOS development version

I also have some towerised A1200 with overclocked BPPC + BVisionPPC and the goodies, but it's in a closet these days.

Well, using Pegasos is quite natural for me, being one of the developers of the OS in question. If you ask me, it's the best amiga compatible there is (yes better than the "amigaone", too).

A towered A1200 with a PowerPC accelerator card has a much smaller PowerPC chip than is used in the AmigaOne series.  The AmigaOne was sold by Eyetech but is discontinued.

The Pegasos 2 was also discontinued but, unlike the classic PowerPC version of AmigaOS 4, MorphOS classic is a freely available download.  MorphOS runs some PowerPC Amiga software and a lot of classic Amiga software as well.

The current hardware capable of running MorphOS is the Efika computer from Genesi.  It is a tiny thing with 128 megs of RAM that has a slower PowerPC chip but it will still run circles around a towered A1200 with an '030.

The biggest problems with AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS is that, unless you're running the classic versions on an accelerator card on an A1200/4000, you'll have to run an emulator like EUAE to get the old software to work.

For more information about MorphOS see MorphZone (http://morphzone.org/modules/news/) and to see more information about AmigaOS 4 see AmigaWorld (http://amigaworld.net/) or Amigans (http://amigans.net/modules/news/) websites.

The pegasos has been discontinued, but by eyeing ebay or amiga.org/morphzone.org you might find one for sale.

I remember seeing "for sale"-post here recently, for example.

The AmigaOS 4 prereleases came with a discontinued computer called AmigaOne.  Since AmigaOS 4 is getting ready to ship on CD-ROM, according to this interview with one of the developers (http://amigaworld.net/modules/news/article.php?storyid=3706) you might want to hold off on the PowerPC systems, for a while to see what it will run on or won't and if new hardware for it will become available.  It will definitely run on a PowerPC-accelerated A1200 but the accelerator cards are very expensive for that reason.

The only new hardware capable of running MorphOS is the Efika, a small form-factor system intended for use in embedded systems.  It's not much of of a step up from a PowerPC-accelerated A1200 since you'd still have to emulate the custom-chips to run any old classic Amiga software.

I don't see a reason why you would want to go the trouble of towering the a1200 when you have a a4000. a4000 will outperform it in everyway and it will be less hassle. A good ecs system is also recommended.

I have one A3000/040(warp engine, X-Surf), a2000/040(gvp combo, EGS Spectrum, X-surf), a2000(action replay 3), a1200/030(MKIV desktop) and a soon to come A4000. I also have a spare a1200 mobo and blizzppc+bvision which I wanted to tower, but since I don't see the point anymore I'll probably sell them.

Also the A3000 and A2000 setups became quite similar. No point in keeping them both probably. I may also dismantle and sell one of them.

The primary unit...

A4000D
Cyberstorm 200Mhz PPC/ 50Mhz 68060
146Mb RAM (more when I get around to installing the Z3 Fastlane Card)
2Gb IDE HDD
20Gb SCSI HDD
DVD-ROM/ CD-RW
1 Internal & 1 External 3.5" FDD
External 5.25" FDD
X-Surf III card with USB Clockport expansion
Picasso IV + Adrienne Sound + Paloma TV Tuner
15" TFT Monitor (some no-name Asian brand)

3 Spare A4000s of various configuration and a spare Picasso IV, 2 A1200s, 1 A500, 1 A1000.  Several C64s for good measure.

Ok then.

I have an 1200 NTSC(not towerized yet, wait for the pics), MBX1230XA, 128Mb RAM, 3.1 ROM, 43 Gb hd,PCMCIA networks, CD-RW and soon a DataFlyer SCSI and a lot of SCSI expansions.

An unexpanded 600 PAL, ROM 37300 with 2Gb hd (yes, it runs fine this way). After my son's borns, I'll do this little fella an A602 (the 600, not the baby).

A (now) unexpanded A2000, Toaster2000, waiting for a Fat Agnus replacement and unfinished DIM (do it myself) IDE controller.:hammer:

Oh, and an A500 NTSC for parts.:horse:

And two tri-norm TV sets and A1942 to use these babies. :-D

Amigas I currently own:

A1000 with AmigaOS 1.x (usually 1.3), 1MB RAM (piggyback hack), A1060 Sidecar controlling 80MB SCSI HD.

A1200 with AmigaOS 3.0, 34MB RAM, DKB Cobra 40 (40MHz 68EC030), DKB Ferret SCSI 2 controller, 200MB internal IDE drive.  I used to use a Zip drive with this but the Zip drive died. :-(  Also the internal floppy drive is now dead. :-(

A3000 with AmigaOS 3.1 (I bought 3.5 but didn't like it), 10MB RAM, GVP-m Spectrum gfx card, MultiFaceCard III, 2GB internal SCSI HD, high density floppy drive.  I've got also a SCSI tower that lives beside this machine with two more HDs of 2GB each, a 1X CD-ROM drive (love it! :-) ), and a Yamaha CD-RW.  This machine has some sort of problem with the custom chips.  I can't get a stable picture out of them until the machine has warmed up for a few minutes, so it's a good thing I have the Spectrum. :-)

I also have a lot of peripherals that are shared between these machines.

Also in the house:

A2000 with AmigaOS 2.1, Fusion 40 accelerator and 5MB RAM, 80MB HD, Video Toaster.  The owner left it here maybe three years ago and seems to have forgotten about it.

I bought the A1000 on 1987-04-17 (I still have the receipt!) so the 20th anniversary is in just a little over a day!  I wonder if I would get in trouble at work if I wear my Club Amiga T-shirt. ;-)

Right two questions now then...

Where or who has a Amiga 4000 for sale that I could put into a tower with PPC etc??

When is the Amiga OS 4 coming out and how much will it be?

I am bidding on a Amiga 4000 but its in London and he wont post so thats kinda not good really..  But there was this on Amibench that I thought looked really worth while:

http://www.amibench.net/cgi-bin/view.pl?type=sale&country=All

Its the third one down - Steve James - I have sent one or two emails, but I'm yet to hear from him. :-(

my advice is to get an A4000. it is better than an A1200 in hardware terms ,extra chips and stuff, you can have zorroIII and DMA capable slots (there is NO a1200 zorro busboard with DMA zorro slots, not to mention they are not zorroIII) and also the mediator for the A4000 is way better than the hack-ish 1200 one... I had some towerised a1200's with ppc, g-rex1200 and mediator before I move to 4000, and never regreted it! but prepare to pay for it ! is won't be cheap! now I have 2 A4000's :

#1.
csppc 604e/200 060/50
picassoIV+paloma+concierto
kickflash + subway combo
goldengate 486slc +isa sound +isa vga cards
IDE hd/cd

#2.
csppc 604e/233 060/50
G-Rex4000D + voodoo3 + lan + sound
arxon scandoubler
AlgorPro USB
multimedia&design auto-monitor switch
scsi cd/hd

they costed much, they offer software of the last decade         but I like them.

At this moment I have the following collection:

* Amiga 4000/040 with Cybervision 64/3D, Buddha/Catweasel and XSurf network card. I believe it has 8 MB Fast RAM.
* Amiga 2000 with GVP Combo 030 card and a separate GVP SCSI controller. This one has 4 MB Fast RAM.
* Amiga 1200 with Blizzard 1220/4

All have Kickstart 3.1 ROMs. There's a number of peripherals as well.

Furthermore, I have a Pegasos 1 and a Commodore 64.

All those machines still need to be set up since I have only a very small desk in my new house (a bigger desk is still on my shopping list), so for the moment I'm stuck with WinUAE/Amikit. Every now and then I grab one of my miggies to do some tweaking/installing, but then they go back in the closet.

I'm thinking of selling my A1200 and A2000 and finding myself a non-yellowed A500 with ECS chipset. I will use the A500 for games and minor utilities, the A4000 will be for the more heavier work. On the Pegasos I will run MorphOS, just for fun and to get to know it a bit.

Concluding: if you want a not too big Amiga collection, go for the A4000(T) for expandability, and take an old one just for fun. The A4000 can virtually do anything Amiga that you want, more than the A3000. The 3000 is the most beautiful Amiga though (in my opinion)

I have two A1200s - one is a spare in a box on my wardrobe.
the main 1200 is:
A1200 Apollo A1230Lite 68030/25MHz FPU and 8MB SIMM, with an 810MB 2.5" HDD, and OS3.9

My main machine is an AmigaOne:
A1XE with G3 750Fx/800MHz 512MB DIMM, 20GB IDE Disk, DVD+/-RW onboard Sigmatel sound, Radeon 7000/32MB graphics card and OS4.0 final release.

I always wanted a 4000, but any Legacy h/w bangin' stuff I tend to do in UAE or on me A1200.
I wouldnt say no to a CD32 and SX32 either !

I have,

1#:
PegasosII G4 1000MHz, 512MB RAM, ATI Radeon 9250, Soundblaster 5.1, 120GB HD and DVD drive connected to my Dell 22 Widescreen LCD monitor.

2%:
Amiga 1200 68030 50MHz, 64MB of RAM, PCMCIA Ethernet card and s scandoubler whic is connected to my Dell 22 Widescreen LCD monitor.

3&:
Amiga 600, 2MB RAN, NO HD.. hiding in the closet ;( If someone here wants an Amiga 600, I will sell it for a nice price. Its white and got no yellow edges etc!

Conclusion:
PegasosII must be the best motherboard ever! I had some problems in the beginning, but found out that it was G3 cpu card which didnt work as it should. Upgraded to G4 and now it works very good!

MorphOS is also more Amiga alike to me than AmigaOS 3.5, 3.9 or even AmigaOS 4.0 .. but thats my opinion. Also PegasosII feels more Amiga than AmigaOne for me. I hope though that Samantha will be out soon though, so I can use AmigaOS 4 aswell.

Well such a range of Amiga's and so I conclude... I must find an Amiga 4000T or a Amiga 4000 of some description!! :-)

I think the Amiga 1200 will be used for gaming mostly but if and when I feel like looking at a beautiful 1280x1024 (or when I can finally get my 24" TFT's, 1920x1200) Workbench screen with Quake 2 running on it or something, I'll be over the moon :-D

Can anyone please help me in finding my Amiga 4000????

Well, it's taken me a long time (until January this year!) but I finally have a system I'm really pleased with:

A1200 in Power Tower
A2000 keyboard
Blizzard 1260 with SCSi adapter & 196mb ram
2gb boot drive, 40gb data drive
40x12x48 CDRW
Mediator 1200Sx (6 slots)
Vooddo 3 3000 graphics
Spider USB
Fast ethernet
Hypercomm1 fast serial
still to get going:
Soundblaster 128 card & Hauppage TV card. Haven't figured out howe to get the sound card to work yet but will work on that soon.

It's amazing the difference the graphics card makes; I used to use Multiscan:Productivity mode & when using IBrowse, it used to take around 30 seconds to swap a tab, not it's less than a second ;)

I still have a desktop A1200 with 2gb drive, Subway USB & Apollo 1240 wit, I think, 64mb ram. I also have an Eyetech Tower which I will be fitting a mobo plus other bits in. I ,may eventually sell that because I don't have any more room!

The 4000 has some PPC thing in it and a PIV but I think the PIV has gone a little crufty.

You should covert this topic in a poll to make statistics and see what people here have.
My guess is 70% people here have a towerized A1200 as main computer.

Never!!  :devildance:

When I have a nice Cyberstorm MKIII inside my A3000 and maybe another Cyberstorm PPC I think I'll sit back and take a rest...maybe Keropi has a spare CS PPC when he gets bored with his A4000's  ;-)

I'm looking for a Amiga 4000 myself at the moment, I've had quite a few people contact me, but I'm interested in one particular from a member on here who contacted me.. :-) Just waiting on replies and so on at the moment :-D

I dont know why I'd want one so bad, but I think its the pure fact, I've never had one and I've always wanted one that gets me the most :-D

I think I'd just like to say, I've owned and used the fastest Amiga possible

I've only ever got rid of 3 Amiga's.. One because at the time I couldnt keep it myself, second one was because it blew up and third one I sold because it was just such a let down...  (this was because PPC @ 240mhz and Bvision compared to 060 @ 66Mhz and no graphics card etc.. Not nice :-( )  Before I lost the PPC Amiga, it was the only computer in the house...  When it died, I got sucked into PC's and Windoze....  :boohoo:
