Title: Payback
Post by: theformula on April 13, 2007, 10:16:12 AM
I was just wondering what its like and if anybodys played it. What are the multiplayer functions like and is that using serial cables. Also is there an online patch and if not i think there should be.

There's a demo on Aminet if you want to try it yourself :-) I tried it once but I didn't have a very powerful machine so it wasn't much fun. Might try it again on my new(ish) A4000 :-D

I hate it. dunno, maybe I was missing some files/configuration, but it looks so ugly. :-(
I have finished GTA1&2 and this 3D thingy seems pointless.

It always slowed to a crawl when I turned on hardware acceleration on my voodoo3. And it was {bleep}e with it off so I gave up on it.

I like the Payback (http://www.apex-designs.net/payback.html) very much and I was proud that such a game was created for Amiga! Especially the Warp3D support is great (screenshot (http://www.ppa.pl/graffiti/obrazek.php?id=521=&full=1)). In addition, the performance of the 68k version was increased in update 7. Also the fan CD (http://www.alinea-computer.de/entertainment/seiten/paybackfancd_uk.php) was released!

Does it have full RTG support?

I loved it!  It may not be up to GTA, etc., but for a classic Amiga title released so late in the day, it kicks arse!  Good missions, good maps, great sound FX, different tunes as you step in and out of cars, great driveability to the cars.  I've played it through several times and will again I'm sure!

I'd say its not up to Super Cars 2, either.. a fun game that runs nicely on A500

Is there any way to get the Warp3D version to run under MOS?

@ theformula

You definitely need a fast 68K processor, meaning 060 or emulated (WinUAE/Amithlon/OS4/MOS). It uses a splitscreen for multiplayer on a single machine. There's no online support.

@ orange

Having played both Payback on my Amiga and GTA2 on my Dreamcast, I've actually found Payback to be more enjoyable gameplay-wise and even (somehow) graphically superior - the use of polygons for vehicles helps a lot in that department.

@ motorollin

I've got hardware acceleration working fine under MOS. I think. I'll double check.

EDIT: Yep. Works fine, though the rotating maps in the main menu don't display properly.

Anyone had RTG working nicely on a voodoo3+mediatorA1200+blizzard060 with P96?

If so I'd be interested in seeing your config. I spent ages going round in circles trying to get things working under warp3D with no success.

@Matt_H
I can run WipeOut on my PegII so I guess Warp3D is working ok? Does that mean I can just run Payback and expect it to work?

lorddef:

IIRC you need pretty new version of the Payback if you like to run it with Warp3D and Voodoo3. Earlier versions had too big texture sizes or something IIRC :)

But it works anyway. Even though bit slowly on 68k, PPC recommended for 3D accelerated version. 2D version is okayish with 060.

motorollin:

Payback uses audio.device for sound. You'll need eaudio.device to run it on Peg. But at least with Peg1 it slows the game pretty much. But if you turn down audio volume completely, then it runs really nicely.

We've played it on Peg more than on 060 ever. Two player split screen runs with good framerate etc. Fun game and nice ideas here and there. Competition Pro USB joystick works fine with it on Peg also. Exploding RC car is great fun as well as tank ;)

@pVC
Would eaudio.device (MOS version of audio.device on Aminet) improve the performance under MOS?

As I tried to say, eaudio.device (MOS version of course) is the one which slows it down. I think people have mentioned, that it isn't that slow on Peg2.

Oh sorry I misread your original post and thought you said "audio.device" :-) I'll give the demo a try on my PegII (once I get round to setting it up again...)

It ran very well for me on my A1200/060/AGA. Hardware acceleration *used* to work for me in WinUAE, but for some reason it crashes the emulator now during startup, sometimes Windows too.

Payback is a great game.I have tried the demo some months ago
and it was running on my -yesterday resurrected- A1 very smoothly

I know it is only a demo version but the final version
should really kick some ashes!!

I have planned to buy it somewhere in the future cause its
technical level is of the highest range for a game like this
with a minimal spec of 68k machines.

Worth buying it and like to see on some Amiga shop's stock
soon.

@ motorollin

Yeah, the eaudio replacement is fine for Payback on my Peg2 (though performance is lousy for Say, of all programs).

Once it's installed and updated, just run the setup utility to pick software and hardware rendering screenmodes, enable hardware rendering, and start it up. Use the 68K executable, though. The WarpOS version bangs the hardware (performance reasons on classics) so even eaudio won't get you any sound with that version.

I like it so much that I made a custom map for it
called "rocket car heaven".

Very fun map with a long track and some smaller,
and alot of space to go wild with the rocket car(s).
Think I have to play it again now.

I have an A3000 with Mercury 040 @ 35MHz with 32MB and Cybervision 64/3D.

I just have standard OS 3.1... soon to upgrade to OS 3.9

Will it play well on a machine like that ?

Every time i start the Payback demo on my A1200/060, it restarts the machine after all those green bars turn red and loading is done :pissed:

I played the game on 040/40 AGA and I was satisfied.

@HardStep
Make sure you have the latest demo/update.
