Title: File transfer by serial cable between Amiga and PC

Hi,

Can somebody tell me what would be the most secure way of transferring files between an Amiga and a Windows 98 PC through a serial cable ?  I used the program "Twin Express", but on the PC side it is a MS-DOS program.

You can use Cloanto's Amiga Explorer (http://dl.cloanto.com/pub/amigaforever/aesetup_x86.exe), who have a little registration fee of US$15.00.

You also need a serial cable (http://www.amigaforever.com/kb/3-105.html) .

Depending on the amount of time you have to invest and the number of files you want to transfer, Amiga Explorer is a good solution but 19200 bauds ain't as fast as it looked back in the days. An ADF (roughly 900k) transfers in about 3-4 minutes so by the time you're done transfering Monkey Island 2's 13 disks, you are asleep, face on the keyboard.

What Amiga model do you have? If you have a 1200/600, you can get a 40-to-44 pin IDE converter and hook an IDE something-or-other (cd rom, zip) directly. PCMCIA flash readers also work good.

you didn't say which Amiga?
if speed is of most importance, you'll probably get best results with Zmodem (for eg. Terminus)

Have you considered a network connection?

If you've got a amiga with a PCMCIA port, you could invest in somthing like the 3C589 10Mbps network card, plug it in, set up all the networking stuff on both machenes, and away you go! Really fast, and you can see the files and directories on your Win98/XP/Whatever box before you even decide to copy them across. Just like having another hard drive on your amiga, execpt thats in the PC system.

I use SMBFS and the 3C589 drivers from aminet, and the AmiTCP program set from a archive with a extremely useful install guide (Does someone have the link?). P-mail me for all the notes on networking that I have accumulated.

...or if you have a hard drive on your Amiga, plug it in your PC and mount it in WinUAE (assuming you are using Windows)

Thank you for your precious help.

I use a 600, a 1200, and a 4000.  For me using a serial connection has the advantage of allowing transfers in both directions without the need for a PC-compatible writable device on the Amiga, or the addition of any other hardware that I currently don't have.  But I will think about the best solution.
