Title: Question about Viper 1260/50

I currently have a fairly vanilla A1200 (only upgrades are a 2 gig hd, pcmcia nic and A500 PSU) and I am wanting to jump to an 060.

I have been checking out the new Viper 1260/50 (the one with out the scsi option) and I have a couple questions.

1. Will this accel WITH a memory simm on it still fit in the bottom of the standard A1200 desktop case and still allow the trapdoor cover to fit back on? I really like the desktop case format and don't really want to towerize it.

2. Is it dependable?

3. Any other feedback on this item?


I am thinking of ordering it from Power Computing in the UK, even though I am in the States. Looks like it would be cheaper than going through Software Hut.

Since both simm and CPU points inward, the trapdoor should most likely fit. However, due to heat and the delicate 060 I would consider a middle way where perhaps you could make hole in the trapdoor for a fan and possible also added a small heatsink on the CPU.

I've got one on order myself, I ordered it at the end of May and had no word about it so I emailed them and they're hoping to get them in next week.  So if you do order one, don't be surprised if it's late.

I've got my 1200 in a tower, so I won't have any problem with it.  The only problem I can see is the heat as Brian said.

The A500 PSU is fine for a Viper 1260. My A1200 is also in a Desktop case with a Blizzard 1260. It works very well. I don't use the trapdoor cover. You don't have to put a heatsink or a cooler on it, because a 060 processor uses lesser power then an 030. Read some info at: http://www.geocities.com/Area51/1739/1260.html.

Can someone review a Viper 1260? Because I want to know if it's the same as a Blizzard 1260, but off course without a SCSI controller.

But will the Viper 1260 have some kind of Cyberpatcher or Oxypatcher included?

Otherwise your 060 Processor crawls like a 030.

Ofcause the 060 CPU doesn't get as hot as a 030... at the time you can feel any real heat of a 060 it's already fried... better to be safe then sorry (and perhaps overclock ready if you're to that sort of thing).

As I said I would put a small heatsink on the CPU at the very least if you intend to keep the trapdoor on... I still sugest a hole for a fan or at least airholes in the trapdoor...

I know what you meen about the look with the trapdoor on... I too have the trapdoor on, on my A1200 with BPPC040... ofcause I have to cut out rektangular holes to let the heatsinks fit through it and get some cold air... and also let the fan get some fresh air so it can do it's work. :-D

My 040 did just fine in a desktop A1200.  I've overclocked it to 40Mhz, and as a precaution have removed the fan, added a heatsink and stuck the fan back on top.  The 040 card is mounted in a tower case so heat isn't too much of an issue - however I do have a nice 5 Volt fan I was planning on plumbing in just in case :-D

I want one too! It seems that Vesalia finally has these babies in stock.. This puzzles me though:

"Turbo board, Viper 1260/56 MHz. With Motorola 68060/60 CPU."
56MHz? Why?

Somebody please make a review :-)

And does anyone know does this board allow PCMCIA port to function?

Okay, just ordered one from Vesalia.. Can't wait to plug it in..  :-D

It is a 1260/50 clocked to 56MHz and has 64mb ram.

My BlizzPPC040 survives in a desctop with 3cm high feets on the A1200 and with large holes in the trapdoor. Been working like this for a few months now without any problems.

Got hold of another A1200 and a Blizz1260 and the cpu get mighty hot without any cooling plate or fan and sitting in original desctop so need to do some mods on this other A1200 I have aswell even though it was ment to be a more tidy system than my other ones, but I guess not. :-D
