Title: Clear up on OS requirements :)
Post by: psyco on April 04, 2007, 10:19:54 PM
I was speaking with a few people today about the Amiga os and said i was about to purchase a 1200 and thinking about using Amiga 0s 3.9 they where telling me it wont run it unless i upgrade the Amiga 1200 and get a cdrom.

Am i going to have issues with this?
Thankyou :)

Bog standard Amiga 1200 will have problems. You will need to find a way to transfer the OS 3.9 install.  On top, you need 3.1 roms inside the Amiga.  Without some kind of ram expansion, then it would be pretty difficult.  Get an accelerator at least an 030/40mhz on up with 32mb ram to give you much more room to work with.

Hi,

Minimum requirements for OS3.9 are:
* CD-ROM drive
* Hard drive
* 68020 or higher processor
* Amiga 3.1 ROMs (version 40.xx)
* 6 MB Fast RAM

To get real benefit, you would want:
* 68060 processor
* 32+ MB Fast RAM
* Graphics card
* Network card / modem

IMHO, running OS3.9 without a graphics card is fairly pointless... You'd be better off running 3.1 and getting updates to "make it look pretty" plus necessary filesystem driver updates, etc, from Aminet.

Sounds like i will need to upgrade the 1200 into a tower and add a pci board and so on or get it custom built.
The process will be all fun along the way  :-)

That should not be needed, unless you really want to max it out with gfx cards and the fastest accelerator you want and so on. A 68030 accelerator should work just fine in the case from what i have heard. You will however need to get a external cdrom and also use/adapt a stronger psu.

Use ClassicWB on your standard A1200. Looks great and has all you need. ---> Link (http://classicwb.abime.net/classicweb/lite.htm) :-D

never had a problem - in fact some of those pretties were starting to be integrated better into os3.9 with stability being improved.

My OS3.9 system for years was A1200 030@25MHz with 8MB Fast RAM, a 2 port IDE dongle with a CD ROM.
I used to surf, and email from it - I was even able to do those two things concurrently, and no graphics card !

of course its NICE to have graphics cards, and its more convenient, but pointless ? no...

I always wondered...

Requirements for 3.1:

* OCS
* 1MB RAM
* 68000

If 3.9 requires 6MB RAM wouldnt 3.1 leave you more free ram? ;-)

PAL Hi Res 640x256 requires interlace?  :crazy: :crazy: :crazy:

The Lite and Full packages are designed for television and standard Amiga monitor use.  Only the Adv packs are for laced modes (or Emulator/P96).

I run OS3.9 on my A3000 with 8M Fast ram and it works great. I dont have a cd in my A3000 so i transfer my installation files with a null modem cable from my PC.

I agree with Agafaster here. OS3.9 without a graphics card is well worth it for the integrated experience you get (and no incompatible dirty hacks). Although AGA native slows things down a bit it is still very responsive as long as you have an accelerator and some FAST mem. If you want to view lots of big jpegs then forget it the chip ram isn't there. But otherwise it is a good upgrade. And if you have a 1200 like me that you don;t want to tower the option of a BVision is a bit pricey and hard to justify :-)
