Title: Do Cyberstorms/Blizzards have socketed PPC CPUs?
Post by: da9000 on March 29, 2007, 03:17:09 AM
All photos that I've found are from the top, so I can't tell if the PPCs are socketed or not. I had a debate about that and want to know the answer, so all you lucky SOBs with one of those cards, spill the beans :-)

Could someone knowledgable also say succinctly what are the differences between 603 and 603e, and those two vs 604 (is there one?) or 604e ?

Thanks in advance!

/me shrugs

Been so long I forget. I'll take a guess at it and if I'm wrong, I will be beat mercilessly by others here

IRRC the 603 is essentially a G1 series and a 604 is a G2 series CPU. The e is model number and maybe adds a few instructions.

Ok did I get it right or wrong guys?

There are no socketed PowerPC CPUs.

I remember seeing some mac accelerators that had 450mhz 604e's and they appeared to be socketed ?!!? or maybe the ebay pic fooled me, I remember I was wishing the csppc ppc was socketed so with a v-regulator we could add a 450mhz cpu

I think the fastest 604 with the same form factor as CSPPC was 350 MHz?

Thanks for the info & links guys, and dang, it would have been nice to put a 350Mhz in there!! Bad Keropi, bad! :-D

Are they BGAs or PGAs ?

EDIT: the 603 looks like BGA.

Wow:
"e300

Freescale has enhanced the 603e core, calling it e300, in the PowerQUICC II Pro embedded processors. Larger 32/32 KiB L1 caches and other performance enhancing measures were added. Freescale's PowerQUICC II Pro SoC processors bear the designation MPC83xx, and come in a variety of configurations reaching speeds up to 667 MHz."

If there was only a socket on those Blizzards!
