cool video
CRUNCH!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0TpLBObBj4)
-
I shudder thinking that many 'migies died that way :-(
-
What a waste :madashell:
Also, I can't help wondering if anybody has ever fallen in that machine. What kind of person does that make me?

Probably someone who watches too many horror flicks. :egad:
People get caught in industrial machinery all the time, unfortunatly. Those warning labels are there because it happened to someone. In the Navy, all safety procedures came about because of someones mistake, often fatal.
All computers wind up in the same place. Its just crazy people like us who delay the inevitable. :-(
-
Headfirst or legfirst?
-
I kinda visualised them falling on to it horizontally and being sucked in evenly. But legfirst would be the worst. I don't actually watch horror films, so I think I'm just psychotic.

According to me it's not funny at all this video!
It's a waste!
At least for a Macintosh Classic I mean.
It's design it's a masterpiece and this is History!
I own one of this!
And even a broken one would be worthy to make a tiny aquarium puttin' in red fish!
I thing that this would be much nice!

I know a couple of people I would like to throw into that.

Even IF you don't like the thought of throwing old dead MAC's into a grinder, at least there's other video's of stuff like cars, couches, and refridgerators getting turned into tiny little pieces.
Better melted down, and reused, than sitting in a landfill.
-
So many Macs, too few grinders

Well, the angle over the shredder is sorta suggestive of the inherent danger. It was my first thought too. I noticed a few of the related vids appear to be handheld from that vantage point. No way I'd trust my sense of balance that much.
Now I'm just pissed at all that waste. We're such thoughtless creatures. :-(

Aww... There was a Color Classic. In my opinion the coolest looking computer ever made.
Joshua.

Melted down into what?
Isn't it easier to separate the materials before you grind them up?

I've "heard" of a man falling into the wood chipper at my hometown's paper mill. The machine shreds through whole trees in seconds. They never found him. They recovered part of the sole of one of his boots though. It's probably just an urban legend...
I would hope such equipment has some security measures nowadays...

I am not mac fan, but still found this distasteful. I am sure some collector would have wanted one of these.

If you watch some of the other videos of the bigger grinders, the camera's are on cranes, so there's nobody up there to accidentally fall in.
-
It's naught but wanton destruction and a shocking waste to boot.
That said, is there honestly a Mac anywhere in the world that doesn't deserve this?

motorollin wrote:

I wonder if this was the sort of machinery CannonFodder was thinking about when he was asking what a Dog Musher does for a living?
-
Headfirst or legfirst?
You can get some ideas from: The Mangler (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113762/), The Machinist (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0361862/), or a classic like Fargo (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116282/).
It`s a pitty wasting hardware that could be of some use to many people (Mac Fans?!)
-
I got my RSA level II in Desktop Publishing using one of these running Pagemaker in the early 90s.

Apparently these guys (http://www.sawstop.com/) had a hell of a time licensing their concept due to liability concerns if it ever didn't work. To get anywhere they had to go into the complete saw business themselves.
Larger machinery likely doesn't have any form of meat-detection built in, though it wouldn't be a bad idea.
-
Those macs looked positively insane bouncing their way to destruction.
The torque on those motors must be insane, they don't slow down a bit as they crunch whatever into oblivion!
I was thinking this could be a great torture device. Get your prisoner to put his hands against the wall and he has to walk on one of the rollers. It won't be too many hours before the poor guy is so exhausted he will tell you anything.
-

Haha! Wouldn't be a good thing for a meat mincer! They would never get any work done lol
If they do need meat detection, some of the dirty S**ts in our local clubs can smell meat a mile off!

They're just dime a dozen classics. The TV was probably worth more.

I'm sorry, but I found it entertaining. I'm sure all those Macs were non-functional(I could even tell you why), no one would pay to have them fixed, pay for the parts, or even use them again if they were repaired. AND it makes my classic Mac more rare and valuable.
:-)
Shreaders like this chew up old equipment so the components can be separated, recycled and made in to new equipment. A much better fate than being buried in a landfill.
As some one who loves to restore old equipment, it seems odd I get a smile watching this. Guess it depends on what's being grinded. 1983 Okidata "Slimline" printer weighting about 120lbs, great. Amiga 4000 tower, not great.
Well I'm off to watch more watchitshred.com :-D

@odin:
I'd prefer leg first, because you know you're in a "good run" once that's taken down, while if you go head first, then you'll get bounced around too much before the cranium snaps :-( Ouch...
-
@stopthegop:
So many Windows PC users, so few grinders... :-D
-
@NoFastMem:
you'd be suprised how well some of the separator machinery works.. Ex: plastic crumbs will float on water, while the heavier stuff, glass, metal will sink. Repeat the process and it's quite efficient and fast (as opposed to hand picking parts, because they don't just crush Macs, but tons of different machines, many of which the workers will have no idea what the components are made of)

You think so? I have PILES of Amiga 500/1000/2000 computers here I just can't take care of and I warned people if they didn't sell I would trash them. (NONE of what I advertised for sale was above 10$)
All I got was a barrage of insult. There are even some who invited to give them away and charge only for the shipping... Do you have any idea how much work it represents to pack and ship these things properly?
Now... nobody even cares to come and pick them up so I will soon have to trash them...
-
@Floid:
wow, that's awesome! I want one of those :)
I know my cousin would too; he lost a finger some years ago, although it was not a saw, but a press.

Please trash them already. You threatened you'd do it last week or so, and you still haven't. Go to the local shredder, and leave us alone.

Eslapion, the only stupid thing posted is from some silly guy claiming to trash some Amigas because he's grudgy because he hasn't found anybody near by to come pick'em up, because he's too whiny.
This topic is OVER.

Do you somehow feel the entire planet owes you something for a reason or another?
I have MANY other things for Amiga computers I will NEVER giveaway and I would much rather destroy with a jackhammer than giveaway for free to you or anyone else.
Somehow, because you take the Amiga as a personnal matter you seem to think you are the only one who knows what should be done with these machines and that you can tell everyone what they can do with their equipment if it has these five letters labeled on it.
Let me dissapoint you. Between 1989 and 1995, I used the Amiga profesionnally, that is, I worked on them to get a paycheck. Let me tell you something, the second the paycheck was out, the Amiga was out.
The Amiga maybe a personnal matter to you but it doesn't have to be for the rest of the world.

For sale!
4 Macintosh computers ... slightly used ... would suit jigsaw puzzle enthusiast as some assembly required.

Great. You just insulted most of the people on here, because you know what? They also think their Amigas are special, else they wouldn't be hanging around here.

Don't worry, you don't disappoint me. I always knew there were a**holes in the world. But since you're proud of it, let me offer a suggestion: why are you here if your Amigas meant nothing to you? You little lost sheep, get the F*** OUT and leave us and our Amigas alone. :madashell:

I never said it has to be. You still haven't understood anything I've written so far. No surprise; it's a matter of gray matter, or the lack there of. But obviously the Amiga _IS_ a personal matter for you too, otherwise you wouldn't be here. Oxymoron, with emphasis on moron is the perfecet adjective to describe thyneself.
Au revoir, JAMAIS!

Be sure to use as many * as you can when you talk to me. I love it! :-D
BTW, I don't see anyone else throwing insults at me. And it so happens that I still have and use a good bunch of Amiga computers. I just don't use them professionnaly anymore because there is no money to be made with them for electrical engineers doing power electronics.
There is still some money to be made in some niche fields, perhaps. At least there are people willing to pay for a browser.
I feel a computer is a means to an end, it should never be the end itself. That's what Apple, IBM and all the PC clone makers understood and that's why both Commodore and Atari lost the markets war.

I don't think I have a gray matter problem because I don't like it when people tell me what I should do or not do with what I own and call me names because I am sick and tired of keeping old junk.
I don't feel the need to throw insults at you either. And no... it is not a personnal matter, it is a money matter. And that's why commodore failed in 1994, they had "Couldn't be Bothered Marketing" (CBM) and saw the machine as a form of holy grail instead of a tool to earn a living with.
If a computer is not a tool then it is a TOY! At least Nintendo, Sony and the new incarnation of Commodore assume what they are. Only programmers and game maker use a PS3 or a Wii to earn money.
The second there will be money to be made with the Amiga, I'll be back creating stuff on and for it. Why do you think all the companies that were there in the Amiga market in the early 90's have gone? Because they didn't like the machine? Of course not. Everybody has to earn a living... maybe you don't.
So, as a matter of fact, a looooot of "lost sheep" (if PP&S, Gold Disk, GVP, RCS Management and ASDG are lost sheep... among others) have left both you and your Amigas very much alone...
It is people who see a platform as a source of money who create the greatest things for it. Unless you have a bunch of welfare recipients willing to work on the next accelerator or display card...
Rage all you want! It's entertaining!

They're free for people like you. I'm glad you're loving it, just like you love trashing Amigas. Otherwise you'd break your stereotype.
I'm also glad you're finally getting some attention, because if you enjoy *s so much then you must be not getting enough at home... or you're a sadomachochist.

Who said anything about using them professionally or not? It's understandable that they're not as "useful" professionally, primarily due to lack of support and software. Duh.

Things aren't so simplistic. If you knew anything about Apple you wouldn't have said that. You don't think that various socio-economic events played big roles in the outcome of today's computer industry?
Here's another take on why things ended up being the way they are, which is certainly much more plausible than yours:

Oh, but you've demonstrated it admirably by not replying to what's been discussed.
eslapion wrote:

JESUS man, how thick are you? Neither I nor anyone ever told you what to do with your junk! We just said to not tell us you're trashing it, in such a way that coerces us or someone to have to save it by either spending more money than they can, or doing whatever your terms are to avoid the catastrophe. Because if they fail to do so, it will only fill them with pain and anguish, seeing how their beloved computers are being trashed, AND FOR THE LAST TIME: BECAUSE YOU'RE ON AN AMIGA-FAN BOARD. If you were doing that in an XYZ newsgroup, fine, but you're doing it on Amiga.org. HOMIE DON'T LIKE DAT! You might not see it, but it's certainly not appreciated here. That is and was the whole fscking point. Now please prove to us that you've got some gray matter still left and finally confirm that you undertand this point.
eslapion wrote:

Of course not, because what I say represents most closely how many Amiga fans feel.

eslapion wrote:

Ummm, no. CBM was run by a bunch of incompetent and money hungry marketdroids/managedroids and they probably had NO idea how much of a Holy Grail their Amiga and Commodore computers were. Read: http://www.floodgap.com/retrobits/ckb/secret/
They did suck at marketing and ALL they did was think about the money (that's why they MILKED the C64 and Amiga models to death, and never brought on any newer and more powerful machines, thus having the Amiga fall behind the PCs by the end of 1993). The failure was BECAUSE OF THINKING OF MONEY. If they cherished the Amiga and saw its potential (and of course used some proper business methods and tactics), the whole world would be running Amigas right now.
And to add to that, what is SO GREAT about the companies you mentioned? Like IBM? They've got pretty much NO personal computers left to sell. The last of it, the Thinkpad division was sold to Lenovo, a Chinese company. And frankly, they have NOTHING great! I never liked any of their stuff (personal computers we're talking about), and I doubt anyone will ever claim greatness on their behalf.
Now Apple on the other hand, which is the prime example of idolizing one's machines (surely you must have noticed that a Mac isn't "just" a computer), they seem to be doing fairly well, as in doubling and tripling their profits and their computer sales.

You and the rest of the unfaithful. Glad to have you around when the going gets tough... You fully realize the proper word for these people is: opportunists. Right? And the antonym is friend.
eslapion wrote:

Ummm, they were opportunists? And they were also NOT Amiga fans (by their right). And actually many of the companies did like the Amiga, for what it was (search around and you'll find many commenting on the greatness of the machine and the technologies therein), but money was their primary factor and concern, as they were businesses and not individuals.
eslapion wrote:
Of course not. Everybody has to earn a living... maybe you don't.
Nobody argued this. Everybody needs to make money, and they don't need to use an Amiga. In fact, nobody in these threads ever advocated having to use one to make a living. Only you seem to feel so. Finally, there's always ways to make money, it takes something called creativity.
eslapion wrote:

They have left indeed, and I personally don't blame them one bit, because they NEVER claimed they were doing it for the Amiga and what it stood for, but for money, and they certainly NEVER came to this forum pretending to be Amiga fans. Duh.
eslapion wrote:

Yes, sure: money is the prime factor for making the "greatest things". Hah! If you only knew of the arts, and of all the people called artists and how they create things (from demoscene kids to game creators to painters and graphicians to musicians and theatrical actors and performers, to engineers, etc). But what would you know about creativity? You probably like being told what to do at work, right? Instead of, god forbid, doing some creative thinking... Surely that's all speculative on my end, but that's what one can infer by your tone and verbage, especially when you seem to throw around money as if it's the panacea of the world's drabness and mediocrity.
