I recently purchased a GVP A500 HD+8 for my beloved old Amiga 500.
The previous owner had a 50 MB hard drive in there and no ram.
I found that installing Workbench 1.3 on it was more difficult than I had imagined. I still have the original WB 1.3 and Extras floppies I got in 1991, but there is no hd install icon?
The format icon seemed to be just for floppies. I ended up deleting each old WB2.0 directory from the hard drive separately, and copying the dirs and files from my wb1.3 floppy.
Now it boots and everything is ok, but I must ask.. Isn't there supposed to be some sort of hd installer and a hdtoolbox with wb1.3? I never had a hard drive back then, so I never looked for it until now.
Also.. What is the size limit for hard drives in kickstart 1.3? Can I put a 2 GB scsi disk in there?
And last but not least.. Where can I get some cheap 30 pin ram to put into it? Will that enable me to play most WHDLoad games, or do they require 2MB chip? :-)

Never mind about WHDLoad, I see that it requires kickstart 2.0.
Can I softkick it and reboot automatically, in some magical way?

Yeah WHDLoad I think it works fine with the Amiga 1200 plus others.
Maybe if you install the 2.0 or newer ROM on your Amiga 500
you can use WHDload.I think youn can.On pages like ebay you can find Amiga goodies.
As for the softkick if you think pressing CTRL+LAMIGA+RAMIGA you can reboot I never had a HD on
the Amiga 500 I have but I suppose you can reboot quickly
your HD system.
Good luck !!

There is not hd installer for wb 1.3. Two weeks ago I get same hd system than yours, mine has 4mb ram
wb 1.3 is not very good looking :)
Some hints that I get
http://aminet.net/package/pix/mwb/MagicWB1.3
Magic Wb for kick 1.3, you still need magicwb icons
Dirwork
http://aminet.net/package/util/dir/DirWork162
MyMenu
http://aminet.net/package/util/wb/MyMenu
Even without whdload there is many hd installable games, if you look games bebore 1993 ?

Yep - take a look at MKick (http://aminet.net/package/util/boot/MKick19) and possibly also VerCheck (http://aminet.net/package/util/misc/VerCheck) and you can modify your Startup-Sequence to check for and boot the relevant Kickstart version that way.
Effectively: Check version --> Load KS2.x image if running 1.3 --> Restart

Thank you very much, the future is looking bright. :-D
I found some sites selling 30 pin memory. For example this one:
http://www.memoryx.net/generic-memory-30-pin-simm.html (http://www.memoryx.net/generic-memory-30-pin-simm.html)
Can someone take a look at the specs for my scsi controller and tell me what ram to order?
