Title: a1200 hd question
Post by: theformula on March 14, 2007, 04:16:15 PM
Hi i have two a1200's. whats happened is i have moved my old hd from my old a1200 and put it in  my new one. They are both the same type of amiga set up and hd  the main problem is my old harddisk wont boot on new amiga thus forcing me to boot from floppy. would it be summit to do with the start up sequence or summit else? help would be great. I am a bit of a noobie so any suggest will help.

i dont think the kickstart is the problem
i move my h/d sometimes from 1 to the other a1200
1 has the 3.0 kick and the other has 3.1

It could be the ROM waiting for the HDD to spin up. Some don't wait as long. When the computer powered up and you are looking at the purple "insert disk" screen, press ctrl+amiga+amiga (soft reset) and the machine should boot.

Also, some drives power down as you hold reset. To stop this, cut the 1st (usually red) cable. It is not needed on Amigas and will stop the drive motor powering down. There is no advantage or disadvantage to keeping the cable in tact if the motor does not power down, so try my first point before getting your cutters out.

ok its was working fine. I then added my eyetech universal 4-device buffered interface and the HDD worked well. I then added cdrom to ide and it went back to purple insert disk screen on start up. I have tried removing ide interface and just booting off hd and that dont work now GRR! I have tryed removing then plugging everything back togehter and it still go purple screen.

I might think that the CD device takes up a bit of time to spin up to speed vs. a HD.  It sounds to me like the CD isn't ready (up to speed) in the boot-up sequence and causing you problems.

I think i have sorted it. Looks like it my ide interface is broken, its really old so i will get a  new one :) i now have it running off hd straight and it seems ok
