Title: Caught the Mig bug... Again!
Post by: baz136 on March 09, 2007, 02:37:30 PM
Hi guys, my name is Barry and have just recently caught the mig bug 10 years after last using my amiga.

There is only 1 expansion on the a600 and that is only a 1MB ram upgrade I bought when i was 9 or 10 LOL

Unofrtunately my Workbench Discs are faulty, Would it be possible if someone here could make a backup of a Workbench disk for me with crossdos on it? Then I could write my own Workbench Installer disc etc to install a HD in the amiga?

I would pay for the discs/postage and your time and even take a picture of me with the original discs to prove I own the originals :p

Cheers

You would have to include your passport so we know it's you :-P

Welcome to a.org!

You hitting on me? ;)

Anyway, would it be possible for someone to send me the WB disc(s)? I heard that there is a Worms game that you can download that writes the game to an amiga formated floppy, Is it possible to do that with a WB 2.x adf image? I don't have a catweasel btw

LOL I wondered when and where that was coming lol btw does a.org have an irc channel on amigaworld or what ever is the irc server of choice round these parts?

Try the "Web interface" option under :Join us for live chats" on the menu bar down the left hand side.

[EDIT]
Hmmm just noticed that the web interface doesn't work any more. If you go to the Information link then it will give you details of the IRC channel.

Actually another quick question. Do I need anything special to install a hard drive on my amiga 600, Install workbench 2.x or even 3.x (if possible) then use visual prefs and finally whdload so I can put all my amiga games (3 big boxes) into the hard drive?
Title: Re: Caught the Mig bug... Again!
Post by: motorollin on March 11, 2007, 11:57:38 AM
You need a laptop-sized hard drive to fit in the A600 case. The A600 comes with a 2.x ROM chip so you can install that to hard drive. If you want 3.x you will need a 3.x ROM chip. If you want to use VisualPrefs and WHDLoad you will need an accelerator with Fast RAM.

[EDIT]
OTOH, you might as well just buy an A1200...

Obtaining a 2.5" drive is easy enough, what accelerator should i use for the 600?

A620 or A630 are the only options I think - 68020 and 68030 processors respectively. A620 would do the trick for playing WHDLoad games, but A630 would be a bit faster (probably not significant if you're only using it for WHDLoad)

i heard that the 6030 runs a bit hot. might just opt for a 1200 to play all my old games

Not really. The 040s are hotter than the 030s.

That would be better as you get AGA as well, and A1200s are much easier to upgrade.

Carefull, some A600s came with 2.04 ROMs (no HD, no PCMCIA9, so one should 1st check wether atleast 2.05 is installed.

3.5-HD can be made fit, just leave out the craddle and buy an adaptor-cable (Vesalia).

If the A600 is a non-HD version you probraly don't have the 2.5-craddle nor the the small ribbon-cable and have to buy these (atleast the cable) before installing an HD.

Post by: Kronos on March 11, 2007, 02:38:28 PM
Oh btw same goes for the A1200, expect the ROM-part as all 3.x-ROMs have HD-support.
Title: Re: Caught the Mig bug... Again!
Post by: smiley1635 on March 11, 2007, 06:07:27 PM
Kronos is wrong.

All kickstart 2 family chips come under the name of Kickstart 2.04.

What you are looking for is the version number. e.g. 37.300

You need 37.350 to use a HD over 40mb iirc

All A600s (including non HD versions) include the cradle iirc.

You wont get a 44pin IDE cable though.

You should get a Compact Flash card as harddrive rather than a 2.5.

No noise, heat. Saves room

Thanks, Yeah the 600 has a cradle but not ide cable. I work in a computer shop but dont actually have any 2.5" ide cables, not much call for them i suppose. So annoying lol

You can buy the Compaq Presario 1200 XL (or XL-O) drive cable instead. It is ALMOST IDENTICAL to the commodore's original (a little bit longer). Easy to find on Ebay.

And inexpensive! I've had buy a 3 units lot for US$9.00 plus 2 S&H. :-D

The 37300 ROM can handle up to 1 Gb HD, 37350 version can handle 2 Gb. versions =<37299 cannot handle ANY IDE.

3.0 and 3.1 ROMs requires 3.0 and 3.1 Workbench versions, who is too heavy for poorly equipped A600.  :-(

BTW: Workbench versions up to 3.1 are FREEWARE (needless to say the 3.5, 3.9 and 4.0 are not?!?), but the ROMs ARE NOT!

Err... I think not... The Workbench software and its libraries are still copyrighted... Owners of the original disks and original Amiga hardware were/are allowed to make backups for their own use, but this is not the same as being freeware...

Why is it you Brits always have the 1200s????  :-?

I could get one from AmigaKit, which is the cheapest around, but with shipping, I don't save anything. =(

Where's Doctor Who, when I need him. I don't like the idea of Scotty beaming me.

Just an upgraded inform: I have an unexpanded PAL A600 with 37300 ROM with an internal 2.5" 2 Gb harddrive running as a charm. Not even a guru, or revalidating crap. :-D

BTW: I've tried an IBM (with bad clusters) 6.5 Gb in it, recognises that too.
