I have a raster image (JPG) which I need to convert to a vector. I have tried a Windows application called MagicTracer, which sadly was not very magic at all. I also tried using Photoshop on my Mac to trace the image with paths, but it's too complex to trace accurately. I am wondering if anyone is aware of any software which could help me , either for AmigaOS, MorphOS, Windows, or MacOS. Or if someone more experience would be willing to do this for me I would be extremely grateful :-)
Cheers

havent tried it, so here's a shot:
http://potrace.sourceforge.net/
Otherwise the best solution is Adobe Illustrator.

Thanks mendark, that worked perfectly! :-D

The following is off-topic, but it bears some resemblence to bitmap-to-vector transformation, in the sense that an algorithm needs to work out characteristics of a picture on its own. And the results are pretty damn spectacular. Point your browser to this link (http://www.greyc.ensicaen.fr/~dtschump/greycstoration/
), and then click on the 'Demonstration' link. The algorithm is capable of removing a helluvalot of noise from an image without distorting its global features. It can even selectively 'paint in' missing parts of a picture: take a look at the parrot behind bars, for example. And since the algorithm can 'fake' parts of an image, it is also incredibly good at upsizing images---well, not in an absolute sense perhaps, but certainly when compared to classical algorithms.
Exceedingly impressive work, and a beautiful application of an arcane topic in mathematics: tensor calculus. I skimmed it in advanced classes during my studies in chemical engineering, and make no mistake: those things are not easy.

There is a program for Amiga 68K on aminet called AUTOTRACE which works great for converting bitmaps into EPS vector files. It's a CLI program. I find it very valuable.
There were also some commercial programs for the Amiga which did this.
Too bad there isn't an Amiga 68K version of POTRACE, though. It looks good.

Hmmmm, this problem seems vaguely familiar to Amiga4001's question about eps pictures on amiga or pegasos. I don't understand why no one has mentioned
XTrace (http://www.groombridge34.de/sites/rschuetz/index.html) by Ronny Schuetz. It's shareware, so feel free to d/l it & try it out. I don't think you'll be able to save your work until you register it, which is easy to do via Paypal. I've registered it years ago & find it meets my needs & then some.
