Title: Jpeg prob - Unsupported SOF marker (SOLVED)
Post by: lurkist on March 03, 2007, 07:26:44 PM
As time goes on, more and more jpegs I find on the net have this problem.  It does not stop ALL programs using the picture, just some useful ones.

Example - (not for the squeamish!)

http://truemetal.org/metalwallpaper/images/pleasuretokill.jpg

This picture and all on that site is a classic example.  I cannot print it as Graphics Publisher does not recognise it.  I cannot convert it with GFXcon, ImageFX, Photogenics either.  Viewtek saves pics out but won't view it, Visage will view it but not save it out!  Finally I resort to PPaint, but lose a lot of quality by using 256 colours.

I guess my question is, does anyone know of an image converter app which isn't picky about the images.

Cheers

PicShow can read that Jpg.
Can't recall its web site address at the moment!

ArtPRO 1.20 from Aminet loads it

ArtPRO 1.20 (http://us2.aminet.net/gfx/conv/ArtPRO1.20.lha) (install tower.library also... its in the archive)

PS- for some reason you have to use the UNIVERSAL loader.

Hi lurkist
Well I have just loaded it on Photogenics 5 on both Pc and Amiga versions, on the Amiga it did ask for volume jpegtmp which you can just assign to anywhere it then loads OK
Still will not load in ImageFX, like you said comes up with Unsupported SOF marker

Have spent this time playing with PicShow.

It does show it, but will not save out as I would wish.  It simply says "Could not save" or something.  This might be due to having no chip ram left! (yes I'm using fblit).  Besides, It will still be in much reduced 256 colour.  I may play with the jpeg saving later after finding jpeg.library.

Re Photogenics - I'm using V.1.0    due to it being free somewhere.

I'll try ArtPro later (think I used to use this years ago!

Re ImageFX - again using a very early version due to it being free, but still it's the best image processor app I use at the mo'.

Thanks for the advice.

Yeah that's a stubborn pic alright. It won't go into Photogenics, Cyber-Photogenics, ImageFX, TVPiant or XiPaint.

But it will go into PPaint and be displayed by PhotoAlbum and Picshow. PhotoAlbum saved it as a new JPEG and Picshow saved it as an ILBM  :-)

probably i haven't explained well. ArtPro works.

I've loaded succesfully the image and saved it to another format without any problem (but to chose the universal loader).

Picshow saved okay in a low colour mode, but failed in 256.

I tried ArtPro, the Aminet version would crash while loading.  I found an older version on an AF CD, it loaded, but when saving the pictures appear very corrupted.  Then I gave up!

If Visage could save out iff pics like Viewtek, all would be well.

PPaint seems to be the only option here.  BTW, I'm not dissing PPaint, it's a fantastic app, just not really suitable for this operation.

AHA!!!

After thourough searching (and testing) in Aminet I found THIS (http://aminet.net/package/gfx/conv/dt2iff).

Very simple to use CLI app which worked perfectly and quickly first try!  Full colour IFFs from tricky Jpegs? - Check!
