Title: OS 4.0
Post by: swift240 on March 02, 2007, 11:07:25 AM
Hi all, I use my Amiga OS3.9 for years now, never actualy thought of geting an upgrade like into OS4.0.
Ok the obvious bit I know full well I cant run OS 4.0 on an 030/40 accelerator and standard mobo.

So then how much will do you think the newer type boards will be when they get started?

What type of reliable bourd should I get?
How much will I expect to pay?
Where from?
Will OS4.0 be a seperate thing?
If so then how much?
Where from?

Now this is the first time I have even looked into a newer Amiga system or something that will run Amiga software.
I am not expecting the newer system to run old Amiga software.  I realy dont expect it to.  I do also run AmiKit but it would be nice to have a seperate Amiga system that is at least up to date.

The ATX case will be no problem.

TIA,
Mike.

It's still too early to have an answer to these questions. We'll have to see if the Samantha board will obtain an OS4.0 licence.

*What type of reliable bourd should I get?

Whatever they give you.  Since the AmigaOne is no longer available (chipset manufacturer went bankrupt, among other issues), there isn't a single OS4 board currently available for purchase.

*How much will I expect to pay?

Only custom hardware runs are likely, so a minimum of $600 for a raw motherboard and CPU... probably more.  These are not common PC boards with off-the-shelf parts, so they are costly.  The discontinued AmigaOne was about $800, and required expensive registered memory.

*Where from?

Thin air.

*Will OS4.0 be a seperate thing?

The powers that be don't want the hardware and OS sold seperatly due to piracy concerns.  Nobody knows how upgrades are going to happen, either.

Obviously that doesn't apply to the classic amiga version. It's not currently available for purchase, but likely it will be the only legal way to buy "only OS4"

But why would you want to, if you don't have hardware to run it on?
