Title: Slow Transfer on PowerFlyer ZIV
Post by: pan1k on February 28, 2007, 04:49:53 PM
Hey guys, i'm trying to troubleshoot my powerflyer problems. I have a brand spanking new 80GB WD HDD, it's rated @ 7200RPM, 16.6MB/s @ PIO Mode 4. I've tried and tried to set it on PIO 4 in FastATA prefs, but it won't boot unless it's on PIO 3. I ran Drivespeed and got about 2.6MB/s, which is pretty dang slow for this drive. Could it be from me formatting it with FFS? I'd like to squeeze as much out of this drive as I can.

Any help/ideas are appreciated.

Hey, I've never used a powerflyer but yeah 2.6mb/s is dang slow.

You can speed up FFS by using Directory Cache when you format the drive, But I'd recommend using SFS. I use 1.236 from Aminet, never had any trouble with it and it's faaaast :-)

Be sure to read the docs first though to get the Filesystem Identifier.

Fastest transfer I've ever managed with the PowerFlyer:

Using an UDMA80 cable, I achived a transfer rate of 5.7 MB/s with a Compact Flash adapter.

What CPU and clockspeed do you have?

Other devices on the IDE chain that are PIO3 can reduce every device to lowest common speed.

Ok. It's just my CD-RW and HDD on the IDE chain. Funny thing is, the CDROM seems to be OK @ PIO 4, while the hard drive won't boot if it's on anything other than PIO 0 or 3. I'm running a 68040 @ 25MHZ w/ a PPC @ 180MHZ. I'd think it would be able to run better. I'll switch everything to PIO0 and see how that works.

Remove the CDRW and try the HDD on its own at PIO4
