Title: eBay auction spam
Post by: Failure on February 19, 2007, 08:10:51 PM
Did anybody else get an email with the following subject?

sell Video Toaster Flyer Edit 3-D Effects Switcher Character Gen

I don't know who the guy who sent it is, and he sent To (not even Bcc) about 100 other people on it.  Came from a yahoo.com account.  I'm not only miffed because of the spam, but now my email address is potentially sitting on 100 people's PCs for malware to pick up.

Glancing through the addresses I think I see several that belong to other people here, since they have a.org usernames in them.

*grumble*  At least it's not V!@g7@ huh?  It's an A4000T setup in case anybody who wasn't lucky enough to get spammed wants to know.

You do know that your email address is visible for all to see in your amiga.org profile?  I don't even need to log into my AO account to see it.

You can un-check the "Allow other users to view my email address" option to prevent that.

...Good thing I double checked to see if that option was turned off so others can't get my email address!

Thanks though.

Everyone, be sure to check this if its been awhile.  :-)

Yeah, I am aware it is visible.  I do not read that as an invitation to tell me about an eBay auction along with tens of other people.  I wanted people to be able to contact me by email in addition to the PM system.

Maybe I should put "Do not spam me" in my profile.  Yeah, I am sure that will work!

*edit* Got to add though, that folks really concerned about this might want to hide their emails as suggested.  I'm really just looking for discussion :-)
