RAy.

Re: who owns amiga today?
A bunch of morons.
So who won the amiga on and off wars???
The what???

ImageFX is going to buy out Amiga Inc after they finish their movie about cooking lubricants.
-
Anyway, I think it was Net Venture from NL which was the investment company which funded the current incarnation of AInc, although funnily enough their webpresence seems to have died =).

And as odd as that sounds, he's not kidding. If it happened, it would probably be an improvement over the record of the last 10 years. :-D

Someone different than yesterday. :-D
-
That's DiscreetFX trying to buy Amiga Inc., not ImageFX. ImageFX is an image processor :-)

Who won the on and off battles for Amiga means little. in the end we all lost. There will never be another Amiga made in any form. And if anyone buys it, it will be the same BS we have been through for the last decade plus change.

Man... I'm gonna get banned from here for saying this... I haven't said this before, and I promise not to say it again.
It wouldn't have mattered anyway if the Amiga had won the race. The pile of chips in your machine right now would be about the same regardless of who won. The idea of delegating operations specific to certain tasks like sound, audio and other things was obvious and already implemented in other systems long before the Amiga became a reality.
The Amiga was just one of the first to market in a cost efficient manner. The Amiga operating system was pretty much just an elegant hack that never had the intention from inception to ever hold a candle to Unix in terms of reliability.
True preemptive multitasking and memory protection were concepts pioneered and realized in the 1960's. And here it is in 2007 and os4 still doesn't have proper memory protection.
I guess you'd ask why I'm hitting Amiga sites and maintaining my Amigas. Amiga was my inspiration. I was 6 when my dad took me into a software store and I saw the juggler projected on a wall. At that point I knew I wanted to write software for a living. I consider myself a lucky kid. I'm still not a game programmer, but hey, life isn't perfect.
-
koaftder you're absoloutely correct.
-
@koaftder
What have you been smoking now? No one has claimed that Amiga and amigaos was the first computer to have these features. Amiga was on the other hand the very first computer aimed at the home market with such features. The only computers that could rival the amiga, was what we would call high end super computers which would cost you a million or so.
The pc back then had ega, pc speaker, no multitasking and so on.
True preemptive multitasking and memory protection were concepts pioneered and realized in the 1960's. And here it is in 2007 and os4 still doesn't have proper memory protection.
Not very suprising is it, considering that AmigaOS has not been in developement since the early 90s and then it is kinda hard for a few developers to make it modern in just as few years. os3.5 and 3.9 was in my eyes not a real upgrade but instead os3.1 bundled with some third party patches and so on..
The amiga was infact the first real multimedia computer aimed at the home.
And todays pcs can by the way still not scroll perfectly, which the amiga has done since 1985 thanks to the custom chipset. :-P
-
Amiga Inc is certainly the current owner, yet they don't have any products... and we still don't have a system we can buy :(
Though the OS team has done a great job, they are not allowed to release the OS on any current hardware. It's very odd... very...

I also agree with koaftder!
I beleive the simple beauty of the amiga was a blending of chips that could get the job done and an OS that allowed you to get the job done without fuss
IFF was the corner stone to this! AmigaOS recognised what file it was looking at, did what was needed for that file without the user having to predefine a role based on some silly file extension etc
And Icons... I really like the Amiga Icon system :-)

Dr. Pentti Juho Kalervo Kouri.
-
can someone translate Starke's email to english?
-
@mongo
Dr. Pentti Juho Kalervo Kouri.
Yep... (http://gutjahr.free.fr/amiga_vs_hare/show_case_doc10-01.pdf)
Today, he is remembered for his participation to controversial "Kouri-deals" in late 1980s. In "Kouri-deals", a group of investors including Dr. Kouri collaborated to buy a majority of two largest banks of Finland, mostly with borrowed money, causing a political outcry.

Sigh...I would love to see an AmigaOS that I could run on anything.
However with the sad state of Amiga affairs (How many times have they been bought and sold? How little have they come up with? What about the price and then death of the Amiga One? And the list goes on.) I doubt highly we will ever see anything of any substance.
I am a proud Amiga owner. I always will be. But I've had to come and face the hard reality of the fact that except for the one or 2 Amigas I get running on my own, that is the end of it all.
-
@Starunner:
You sound like a weeping old man.
Please stop it.
Amiga is not fully dead, even if things arent the way they should be for any given company, including Amiga, at the end of the day, the are still creating things for the amiga, whether it be the out sourced developers of games and software, or the magazines that enthusiasts are keeping alive, and the companies trying hard to get Amiga Inc to accept their hardware,
Point being, you sound like youve given up all hope.
Question to you, would you give up all hope if your mum was diagnosed with cancer????
I didnt, and that helped my mother mentally, and her sub concsious mind, and I believe this in turn did help her.
The rest was all in the hands of her and the kemo therapy.
Anyway, 10 years later and shes still alive, my farther even died before her, and he was very fit!
So companies, just like life, can not be said or told that they are finished, until it really happens.
Now Amiga Inc has not yet announced their resignation, which means we should not be negative towards them, and forget the past, and move on into the future!
YES, ok B.McWen initially said a lot, but this time he still hasnt made an announcement, and you wanna know why, because if he did, and his announcement wouldnt happen, then all of you guys would be bitc-hin about it!
Cheers

Hehe Starke, are you new to this game ? I have been using and following the Amiga scene since early 90`s .. through the Commodore bankruptcy and all they way to the Amino/Kmos/Amiga Inc. deal...
There have been so much talk.... its so stupid! There are several hardware out there, it just seems like Amiga Inc. doesnt want OS4 released!!
I cant see why anyone would believe anything from Amiga Inc anymore :/
-
There have been so much talk.... its so stupid! There are several hardware out there, it just seems like Amiga Inc. doesnt want OS4 released!!
It's because no single entity owns OS4. Amiga Inc did the buy back option from Hyperion but Hyperion used the Twin's kernel (it's their IP) which means Amiga Inc doesn't own OS4 but in name only. OS4 is legally h0rked up and that is why Amiga Inc talks of OS5 being inhouse and will include x86 support.

@KRIZE:
It gets worse, Bill McWen doesnt want to supports OS4 at all.
However, B.McWen has stated that he allows other companies to have OS4 Used on hardware, provided they run it by Amiga Inc First!
Its on their webpage under the OS developemnt link!
Man, Lets hope this Ass-hole McWen allows the sam440ep and any other hardware made by others to be allowed!
Otherwise he may have to pack it all up for Amiga COmputing and leave, as He will loose a lot more faithfuls, which cant be good for our already niche market!
-
Dammy, please refrain yourself from using that silly smiley face pic hitting the donkey in the balls! 8-) 8-)

Good to see you're finally catching up. You probably could have done so by spending a day or two reading about the soap opera thats been running for the last few years, rather than urging people hand out flyers at the bus stop so that "Amiga Inc. will see we support them".
as He will loose a lot more faithfuls, which cant be good for our already niche market!
Still not 100% caught up though, I see.

@jorkany: hehehe... i dont think stark will be ever 100% uptodate, lets hope for a 99%...

At the end of the day people power will win , we just cant giv e up , not just yet . How long has Bill been in power for now and what good has he done for the company ? Surely with a lot of dissatisfied consumers he will get the boot ? Is there anyway we can buy some shares in the company and get some people in the board of directors ??? There has to be a way to get Amiga moving forward again . Seems like Bill is stuck in the 90s

What a mess, I feel sad fot the poor Hyperion guys, all this work just for arguing and mess ? It surprises me that they dont have any plan of how to do this...

They really can't do much, it's that big of a mess. I wouldn't be suprised to hear about Amiga Inc sending C&D letters out to Hyperion and their "subcontractors." I'm suprised so many people are pining over OS4 when AI is pushing for OS5. That should have told the story of OS4, right there.

PLeaaaaaaaaaaaasssssssssssseeeeeeee
Jorkany and others,
I did not imply that we shouldnt support Amiga, yet alone Amiga Inc, I was just merely pointing out that OS4 will still hit new hardware, but it wont be as easy as, there is new hardware available lets use it.
I think what Bill McWen wants is OS5, yes, however, he may still be looking at various hardware companies for the OS4, and choose particular type of companies that may be useful to Amiga Inc in future!
Who knows, who cares, I just know I care!
-
I understand that OS5 was in the plans. Where can I find out about OS5 of late.
Thanks.

@trekiej :
Simple,
Go to google,
and like me,
Try and find it on the net, as many on these forums will expect you to do the research yourself, whether it takes you 3 days, or 3 weeks.
I had to, coz no one at the start directed me links, until recent! You gotta fight for your right to recieve links on here, atleast, thats what they made me do.
Cheers!!
P.S.If I find any worthwhile links I'll let you know! 8-) 8-)
-
Perhaps Starke is right that I sound like a weeping old man.
However, after years of listening to the silence of the Amiga front in the post Commodore era, I find it hard to have any faith in Amiga Inc or the Amiga making any kind of comeback at any point.
I know that sounds harsh. I know the example that Starke gave about cancer and his mother. There does come a time though that you run out of hope.
I ran my A3000 til it died in the late 90s. I went out of my way to get another A500 as well. I even picked up an A4000 after coming across it on accident. But there is nothing new coming, and I would be highly surprised if it did.
I will always support the Amiga. I always have. To this day I relate to people who never heard of the Amiga stories of how great it was and how much fun I had with all of mine.
It is just sad to see something great go away bit by bit.

No, he's a troll.
If he really was just a clueless newbie, he'd have gotten a clue by now, after having been a member for a month and making 270 posts. But it just goes on and on...
I think he's a pretty boring troll too, with one exception: His referencing of a WrongPla.net article actually made me laugh. That was a professional Slashdot TrollTalk move!

I first got into Amiga's with the Vic 20. When I heard rumors of the A1000 I bought one as soon as it came out.
6 Amigas and a career path later, I switched to Wintel boxes, why? Because I have business sense.
I still have three loaded Amigas (1000, 2000, 4000) in a box and just recently pulled the A4000 out for benchmarking (for an article I'm writing). As much as I long for the good old days, I still wonder why?
My blackberry has a 347Mhz Processor, 64mb RAM, wireless with 3 or more browser applications. Supports Excel, Word, and a number of other formats. Event he screen resolution beats the first Amiga's! I drop this phone on the floor five times a week and don't care.
It's hard to think I can make anything of an amiga that can't beat my cell phone if I put $10k into it.
Still in love with the idea of the Amiga though. So you can go easy on the flames.

Pllllllleeeeaaaaaassssssssssssse Dont Insult all of us over here before knowing the current happenings of the Amiga and the Amiga community!
If you want to come back and be a part of the community again, I suggest you pick up a pen, a gigantic notepad, and start jotting down your researched notes from the Internet, Magazines and various other sources!
Oh yeah, and make sure when you finally find some Webpages of value, to bookmark them. Or just use the Opera browser instead of Internet explorer piece of SHet!(Can you tell my dislike towards Microsoft and Bill Gates?)

The more I read the more I see that the real hampering of progress is not the hardware or software developers but Bill McEwen himself !!!!
Do you think its possible he is paid by microsoft to keep Amiga low profile
-
The more I read the more I see that the real hampering of progress is not the hardware or software developers but Bill McEwen himself !!!!
The whole Amiga Inc, as we know it, was a dotcom scam. Had he and the Sheep Lord gotten their act together earlier, they could have been far more successful with DEad with the vast amount of VC that was floating around then. They started this too late in the bubble cycle and couldn't get the devs onboard as much as they tried to enfluence Amiga Community that AOS was dead, DEad was the future. That's when they started to do a hack and patch job on AOS to gain additional revenue and had to real road plan as 3.9 was released. Sales were dropping an they needed income so a poorly thought out OS4 replacement was given a go. Now A1 disaster and OS4 which seems to be fragmented of ownership, Amiga Inc is trying any song and dance to stay alive. So no, it's just not McBill that is hampering AOS, AI is rotten to the core.
And no, M$ has Linux to worry about, we would be luck for M$ to even know AOS/MOS/AROS existed. McBill needs M$ for DEad. M$ doesn't need McBill nor DEad.

Well my $0.02 worth is...
As many of the faults as you may think OS4 has or even Wb1.xx on the Amiga 1000/500 you try using Vista on a daily basis to run your business and you will see why
a. it's still behind in some ways to wb1.3
b. it's worth about 50p/50cents
Basically Vista crashes for no reason (at least I knew what guru'd out my poor A1000 in the past) AND more often and seriously than my A1000 ever did. Sorry but if you are getting screwed by Apple/M$ with multi million pound budgets I don't think you can really have a go at OS4 which runs on hardware levels that OSX 10.4 and Vista wouldn't even be usable on. And the resizable desktop windowed screen of Wipeout2097 on the youtube realtime demo just goes to show how crap things still are and how {bleep} your choices are (don't even start me on Linux! I'm a laptop engineer and run a laptop company and I wouldn't touch Linux if you paid me, it's so hacky and CLI based even today it doesn't deserve to leave my dustbin either)
Tripos (which is what the Amiga Wb 1.xx was based on and written in months by Dr Tim King still multitasks under load more gracefully than XP which arrived 20 years later aswell) infact the only thing Vista does manage to impress with is it's GUI responsiveness even on 99% cpu load, shame the rest is just damned nasty bloatware @ 10gb
