Title: Bars & Pipes developer Alfred Faust needs help.
Post by: Ral-Clan on February 15, 2007, 05:51:33 PM
As some of you may know, Alfred Faust had a bad year in which his Yamaha synthesizer died and now both of his Amigas have broken.

For the past five(?) years, he has graciously, single-handedly and without reward GREATLY improved our beloved Bars & Pipes software. He has always been helpful and responsive. He's even ported the application to MorphOS, OS4 and has been looking into a Windows port! This is the work of one man who is a pensioner with a low income and not even a professional programmer!

The members of the Bars & Pipes Yahoo mailing list have decided that now is the time for Amiga users to put our money where our mouths are and thank Alfred for his work by donating equipment or money to repair his Amiga.

Please send any donation you can ($20US suggested) via
PayPal to Alfred at the following address:

alfred.j.faust@gmx.de

This is his personal e-mail account which is connected to his personal PayPal account.  You can also contact him through this e-mail address if you have Amiga equipment or MIDI gear you wish to donate.

I've already sent my $20...if all current Bars & Pipes users do it he will be able to afford to get his Amiga repaired or buy himself some working hardware!

C'mon! Surely $20 is not much to ask considering the MASSIVE amount of FREE work he has done and the high quality of the product that has resulted (the original B&P sold for hundreds of dollars!).

Sad to hear that. I am a user of Bars & Pipes and Alfred has always been very helpful and friendly. My $20 is winging it's way to him.

Thanks very much!  Alfred has been very surprised and touched by the donations.  We haven't broken $100 yet so we really need everyone out there who considers Bars & Pipes a "critical app" to donate.

I'm just going to bump this one, because it's for a very good cause.

I don't use the program as much anymore but sent him a donation for his support of the Amiga.

That's very gracious of you.  As you may know, Alfred is continuing to port this great MIDI sequencer (still unmatched on any modern platform - many of us feel) to OS4, MorphOS, and possibly Windows....It also runs well on UAE, due to his efforts.  You might want to re-acquaint yourself with B&P on those platforms.

He still has a Wintel box doesn't he? There is nothing to stop him coding it through UAE...

B&P does not work well in WinUAE, at least not on my PC, because of MIDI timing issues (I think). I'm getting hanging notes when using B&P in WinUAE. That's why I bought a real Amiga 1200 with a MIDI interface. Now I'm using Alfred's latest version for Amiga classic on my Amiga 1200 and it's great.

I'm glad I can give something back for all his improvements and have just sent him $40.

Hmm, that doesn't surprise me actually, sound emulation in WinUAE is quite poor. I had to rewrite the sound system of my emulator to work around a compatibility bug which was reported and confirmed months ago. :-(

As we all know, emulators are close, but just not the real thing.  Since Bars&Pipes bases all its timing on the Paula chip, and WinUAE does not have absolutely perfect Paula emulation, this can result in timing errors when running B&P on UAE.

There are also little, subtle things that you can only code for/test for by developing B&P on a real Amiga.

I still use  B&P,but I have so many B&P song files.I am scared That my Amigia 3000 will break down and I won't be able to retrieve them.I have a tape back up drive, but tape sheds I need to get these files to midi and on a cd will pay top dollar$$$

Tell us more about your system, it might simply be a case of installing WinUAE on your PC plugging in the A3000's HD and booting up :)

you can convert B&P files to midi files with the accessory smerff.

I convert some times ago my songs to midi and reload it in hd-rec.but depend on your song what get lost.
i see i have 2 versions of smerff, 1 with size 17064 1 with 19240.

the version with size 17064 is active on my install so i think this i use.as write options i use Format 1

another solution is you can switch midiclock on and record all with your PC sequencer.
