I have recently purchased an HDD as shown in the subject line from EBAY.
I would like to format it, and install Workbench 1.3 (bootable).
I am running a standard A500 with 512k upgrade, and i beleive that the HDD has RAM in it too.
Can anybody please shed some light on how i may be able to format, partition and install WB1.3 to be bootable? :-?
Thanks, Bastjan76

If you don't have the original disk, things goes bad!
Try install directly via the workbench disk. Tell us what was as happened.

Going back this far, the GVP FaastPrep disk is probably your best bet (well, unless anyone has a better idea :-)) If you don't have another Amiga available, at least. If you do have another Amiga, there's plenty of options open to you. If not, maybe someone can slip you a copy of the disk.

Faastprep is available from:

If you cannot get the gvp fassstprep floppy disk there are two other possible ways:
1) format the harddrive would be to use commodore's hdtoolbox in workbench 2.0 through 3.9
you have to use cli or other shell program navagate to hdtoolbox's location and type in:
hdtoolbox gvpscsi.device
double clicking on the hdtoolbox icon will default you to a scsi.device which is the default commodore scsi controller, ie a2091.
The problem with this method you really need workbench 2.0 or above..
2) connect the harddrive to another amiga with a commodore or gvp scsi controller. Then put it back in the a500-HD8+
I believe that the gvp A500-HD8+, the commodore a2091, and the A3000 scsi are all compatable. you can format a hard drive with any of these controllers and used it with any of the other controller, at least I have not had any problems.
This will not necessary work with other harddrive controllers like dataflyer, or IVS trumpcard.
lastly with OS 1.3 you can only use FFS (Fast File System) or OFS (Old File System).

Dam'n I can't remember, it's been so long since I've used 1.3 in any great capacity. Why won't the HDtools on the 1.3 Extras disk partition the drive for him? I used a HDD in 1.3 it can be done. Can't it?
Can the scsi device be set in the 1.3 HDtools?
