Title: slimline cdrom

hi guys
i want to fit an slimline cdrom of a laptop into my 1200
but how does it go with connectors etc.
please give me some tips on how to fit it

You need:

Laptop cdrom drive with JAE connector (TEAC or NEC)
JAE > IDE adapter
IDE buffer (To get the best performance)
Kickstart 3.1 (Does 3.0 support ATAPI? KS 37.500 doesnt)

Stick it all in your A1200 and use IDEFIX97 to install.

If the CD's got one of those propritery connectors on the back of the laptop drive you will need to get an adaptor of some kind.

I think Smiley means a Fast ATA controller.. :-)
Not really needed anyway.
Im selling a complete Internal CD-Rom kit, if anyone is interested.
Everything needed is included, a Teac cd-224e 24x CD-Rom, slimline cd-rom adapter, 2-way splitter and cable for £29.99 +shipping.
Installation is very easy.

I thought IDE buffers improved hd - cdrom access performance ? and that really makes a diference especially if it's on your boot drive.

No, I mean a standard buffer.

Having a HD and a CDROM on a single chain from the interal header is going to cause major slow downs when copying data from a cd to the hd for instance.

I would definitely recommend one.

I agree with smiley1635, get a Buffered IDE interface from Amikit or other.  Good stuff.  :-)

Not really.  The buffer has nothing to do with performance.  It is an electrical circuit to protect against excessive voltage or current, not a memory cache/buffer.

Indeed. Personally I ran my custom selfmade IDEFix HW without any interface buffers, and I had 3 HDDs and a CD-RW connected. It ran for years until I dismantled the A1200.

Sure, get buffered interface if you will, but remember that it (the interface buffering) has nothing to do with performance. Oh, and obviously things like Fast ATA will be faster, but that is not due to interface buffering.

If you had this problem there must have been a problem with your master - slave setup.
Maybe your harddrive doesnt work in a master - slave setup.
Or you are using a CF card as hard drive.
