Title: Need some help identifying this
Post by: Acc3d on February 13, 2007, 12:24:27 AM
I am having an issue getting my A2000 to show up on a monitor.  I haven't booted this A2000 in about 10 years.  It sounds as if it's booting up, but I'll skip to the issue.

I've stripped it down to a basic A2000 and I am having some issues getting anything on a monitor.  The mono composite out never worked on this Amiga, so I can't tell if it's the sync strainer or what.

When stripping it down, I discovered the item in the photos.  I cannot remember if I installed this or if it is part of the stock A2000.  Is this a kickstart selector?  If so, can I pull it and just drop in the latest kickstart?

Thanks

Yes, it's a kickstart-switcher with ROMs 1.3 and 2.05.
You can just remove it and put the latest ROMs 3.1 on
the motherboard.

Thank you.  Did it come standard on A2000's or did I install it?

No, a kickstart-switcher was not a standard part of the  A2000, so you must have installed it later.

Remember this: if was some kind of accelerator on the machine you problably move some MB straps from his original places.

That could be a cause of the boot issues.

Yep, as everyone has pointed out, it's a kickstart ROM switcher.  Looks like the one I have in my A500.  Made by ICD (I think) and it's an Auto changer, you just hold down Ctrl-Amiga-Amiga for 5 seconds, you will hear a beep, let go and the Amiga boots to the other ROM.  There is a Jumper on board which allows you to define the default ROM you would like to boot from.  There is also a flylead with IC pin clip attached, which has to go to a Gary pin for some required signal (Reset I think).
If you have removed that device, have you been testing the machine with it plugged in correctly?  You do have something in the ROM socket, right?   I can probably find the settings for you if you'd like. :-)

BTW, if it was mine, I'd keep it and remove the 2.05 ROM and replace it with a 3.1.  That way you can still have 1.3 easily if you need it to play that old classic game you liked  :-D

EDIT:::  YAY, just got promoted to technoid  :-D

off-topic....

Love that CyberCon III avatar, melange.  :)

There should hopefully be a new and improved WHDLoad patch out for the game soon.

There you go I just changed it.

I have never actually tried to play the game all the way through with WHDload.  Do you know if the current version allows you to complete it?  I just had a play on my Laptop in WinUAE and it didn't look real good.  Usually I boot that one up in 1.3 on a real Amiga and play on that :-)
However I would love to see a good WHDLoad version.
Thanks for the info Angus

Ah, the dreaded map!  :)

I followed up your post to a new thread called CYBERCON III in the gaming forum, hope that's okay.
