Title: WTB: PCMCIA NIC for Amiga Laptop
Post by: mpiva on January 26, 2007, 10:41:07 PM
I recently bought a Toshiba laptop on which I've installed Amithlon and WinXP.  The laptop is a little on the older side and has no builtin ethernet.  Does anybody have a suggestion for what type of network card I can put in the laptop's PCMCIA slot that will work with both WinXP and Amithlon?

I'm using a 3Com EtherLinkĀ® III LAN PC Card model 3C589D-TP.  On the back of the card at the bottom right corner, it states REV: B, which I'd guess is revision B.  I know that there is a REV: A, but I don't know if there are any revisions past revision B.  The drivers should be on AmiNet.  If you can't find them or if AmiNet is still down, write me at my e-mail address listed when you click on my user name.

I know that there's also a wireless Ethernet card with drivers as well, but I think you have to pay a nominal fee for the software.  I could be wrong about paying for the s/w, though.

Is this the card (http://cgi.ebay.com/3Com-EtherLink-III-3C589D-TP-PCMCIA-Card_W0QQitemZ140080623344QQihZ004QQcategoryZ42193QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) you're talking about?  The auction says it's missing the dongle.  Is this important?  Do I need that?

Yes this is the one I am using with my A1200, so my guess is it would work on Amithlon too (though someone might know otherwise)

You will need the caddy in order to use it - it's impossible to connect an ethernet cable onto it without one, so I suggest you search for a different item on ebay

The dongle is a must, it links the network cable and pcmcia card together.

you can pick up loose cards for peanuts but cables are harder to come by.

You should be able to pick up a card and dongle for less than £10.

I think you are looking for an Network card with Prism ChipSet. You need the cnet.device from aminet to get it running. I think there is something in the .readme about the supported cards (chipset wise). I have an Fiberline FL-4680 here in my setup.

Bye

Yes, that's the card.  But, without the "dongle", the card is not usable.  It's an integral part of the network card, as the "-TP" part indicates, it's where the Ethernet Twisted Pair jack is connected to.  Also, you should ask the seller to look on the back side of the card @ the bottom right corner to determine which revision the card is.  Mine is Rev: B.
