Title: G-Rexx worth its weight in Gold
Post by: stopthegop on January 19, 2007, 10:45:48 PM
Used G-Rexx PCI bridge for Amiga 4k.  29 bids.  sold for $406.  Total snipefest so it probably would have gone for more given more time.

Sheesh.. Watching that auction I kept thinking I was at Christies bidding on rare Stuben Glass or something...  I don't imagine these things might ever get cheaper, will they??     :-?

Edit:  I realized a slight mistake in calling the G-Rexx a "bridge".  I guess it really isn't a bridge, but merely an extension of the PCI bus already existing on Cyberstorms.  The Mediator and Prometheus (did I spell that right?), on the other hand, are bridges.  Guess thats why everybody wants a G-Rexx..  :)

Yeah, watched it too....
They are very sought after because it's the fastest PCI soloution and they are rare as hell and the holy grail if you want to run MorphOS PowerUP  ;-)

It was me who won it.

My Amiga project is a labour of love, and money is no object.

Sorry for sniping, but I wanted the kit badly. G-Rexes don't appear for sale often so I had to act fast and bid seriously. :idea:

Sorry if it means I'm evil, too, or something.

I'm not a bad person though, honest. I'm a budding musician and I use my Amiga for composing. The G-Rex will allow me to get full 16bit sound via the array of nice sound cards that are compatible with it, for programs like Octamed SS, DigiBooster and now especially HivelyTracker.

I am trying to become active in the demoscene, and I've even written a new printable PDF manual for AHX (http://lavaburn.com/files/ahxusersguide-redux-1.0pre3.pdf), a chiptune tracker.

I hope you can appreciate that I will be using this kit in a very good and productive way. At least it wasn't bought by someone who'd just hoard it for the sole purpose of selling it on for twice the price later on.

Sorry, anyway. :cry:

And AMIGAZ, as you well know, I do indeed run MOS PowerUP, so you can probably see the other reasons for me wanting it. :)

I'm a little miffed that my eBay auto-search notification never sent me a notice on this one... I want one soooooooooo bad!

Me too!  I really, really, really want one.  I want that and some other choice but impossible-to-find bits (DKB3128, Clock-UP, Z3/256, CstormPPC, SiameseRTG/Ethernet, et. al.) as well as some hypothetical ones -- CyberstormG5/060?

Anyone up for an unofficial poll?  I'm curious.. if somehow another production run were to happen for some of these much-sought boards, how many of you would honestly commit to buying one (use the G-Rexx PCI as an example)..?  How many here would buy a new G-Rexx if they were available?

Me?  I would buy two, one for each of my A4000s.  :)

I can assure you if the snipping did not happen it would of netted more than it did.  Sniping is the only way unless you want to overpay out the arse!!!  lol

I was actually surprised that it "only" came to £206, too. I was preparing for much, much worse.  :crazy:

Glad some people see some sense in my purchase; makes me feel better, too.

What's cool about these items is that they don't seem to lose any value at all as the years go by...  :-)

I'll have some parts to sell after I set up the G-Rex, *possibly* a CyberVision PPC among other things.

That's why I got one too  :-D

I think I will not join that club. I'll keep on using my A4000PPC with a normal CyberVisionPPC. That is good enough for me.

I'm done buying second had Amiga hardware unless I can buy it cheap. In that department I had some luck though the last 6 months.

That said. I do have a G-Rex for my towered A1200 with a maximum BlizzardPPC. It doesn't have SCSI though. I can't say it works any better than a Mediator solution or just using the BVisionPPC.

@keropi

A friend of mine bought one grex4000D from a french guy for 100€ two years go. I gave him the url of that g-rex because I would never pay more than 100€ for it... I even saw a 4000T one but it costed 80€ and I already got the Prometheus for less than that.

@keropi

I already had my prometheus, which offered more slots and could work with any cpu accelerator (And I can't remember if I had the CSPPC when I saw it). In addition to that OS4 wasn't going to work with GREX and there were no news about MOS being released for classic.

If I saw a G-Rex 4000T for 80€ today I would buy it without blinking :-D
