Hi!
Let me introduce myself. My name's Mel and Im told, quite a rare specimen - namely a lady amigan :-) I got my first miggy when I was 12, an A500+ and had many happy days playing magic pockets....
Fast forward to the present. One of the guys where I work introduced me to this place yesterday. Somehow we got onto the subject of amigas when I was supposed to be finding out where the internal project notes are for the system he develops here. I have my suspicions hes too busy here to have written them ;-)
Of course now I can keep my eye out and see if thats true
I still have an A1200 with a Blizzard 1230 I got a few years ago but I havent unpacked it since moving. Having looked around here Im feeling nostalgic. I had no idea that there was still so much going on in the amiga world :-o
Well there goes my late lunch break. Be seeing you around!

Hello!
A HUGE welcome to you! You're right, it's mostly guys here (and I'm one of them).
I hope you'll have a great time on Amiga.org. It's a superb site connecting Amiga hobbysts from all over the world. Helping each other and having a good nostalgia time in general.
So go on, unpack your Amiga, try it out again. Watch out when all your memories suddenly come back to you as you start to play these old games. It's great!
-
Ok, I have to ask: Is that you in the avatar? :-)
-
Welcome to amiga.org :-)
-
Welcome!
You should indeed unpack your miggy again and give it a go. Nothing beats a few hours of shooting/racing/RPGing/flying on an Amiga! :-)
(well, *almost* nothing, but since there are probably kids under 18 on this site I won't go into detail  :pint: )
-
Welcome, may I ask why you came back to the UK?
-
Welcome!
-
Hello from the XX committee! :pancake:
-
Hello Mel, Welcome to Amiga.org
Enjoy your stay and remember if you have any questions feel free to ask as there is allot of Amiga knowledge trapped in our heads and we love to share it ;-) Defiantly one of the friendliest forums on the web.
-
Thanks for the welcome :-)
skurk: yes.
lorddef: erm... Im guessing that wasnt meant to sound as unwelcoming as it could appear ;-)
I have been contracting abroad for the last year and a half and I have recently landed a permanent position here.
-
:-o If this place wasn't already addictive enough without someone who looks like that as a member. I look forward to seeing you around the forums. I'm in the UK too, is there any chance we could.... oh never mind ;-)
Welcome Avatar... I mean welcome Mel

Ill have to dig out that 1200. I havent even turned it on in nearly two years.
I heard that some systems can have problems with battery leaks. I dont remember the 1200 having a battery, or does it?
-
Welcome!
And no the 1200 doesn't have a battery. But your Blizzard may have one...

I totally agree with you tonyvdb and apologise to you Mel for my playful post above.
We must indeed treat you as a fellow Amigan now or risk other girls not coming here in the future. Please understand Mel that it is a big and happy event to hear of a female Amigan, and we are pleased and a bit over excited about it. Obviously we could not help but notice how attractive you are in your Avatar also.
Please allow us to start again and ask away with anything we can help you with :-D

Welcome aboard Mel :-)
May as well throw my 2p's worth in ... where did you say you lived? I've lost your address
Errr ... ok, forget I asked where you live - I've just glanced at your profile

Welcome to Amiga.org, hope you dont get scared off easily :-D
I second the setting up of your A1200 again, you just need a decent game as a good excuse i found.
Also what kind of technical articles do you author?
Andy
-
I agree, this is not a dating site. However, I'm not looking for a date - I have a girlfriend and a son with her, so I'm not available. Sorry, Mel ;)
I was merely trying to be funny, which obviously isn't my strong side ;)
That aside, welcome to Amiga.org! Hope you will enjoy your stay as much as I do!
-
@ mel_zoom
I heard that some systems can have problems with battery leaks. I dont remember the 1200 having a battery, or does it?
No, the A1200 does not have a build-in battery. Your Blizzard have one but it's the coin-type one, not the barrel-type. AFAIK only the barrel ones leak.
Here (http://www.amiga-hardware.com/display_photos/blizz1230iv_5_sm.jpg) you have a picture of Blizzard 1230-IV where the coin-battery can be seen.

sorry don't believe you, its all geeks and nerds here no doubt. But its a nice joke i guess

Hey McVenco you Said "but since there are probably kids under 18 on this site I won't go into detail"
I am one of those kids 12 infact and ive been using my amiga since i was 9-10.
My first amiga was the a1200 for £3 then the a500 £3 again
and my amiga cd32 that was also £3 at a carboot sale all off the same person.
I may be young and amiga may br before my time but i'm a proud user of amiga i hate windows even though I use it.
C= was about design and capability. Unlike other companies they were about the looks.
Well happy amigaing everyone!!!!

Aha, so you're the Amiga's next generation?! When I was 12, I had a ZX Spectrum, also used my friend's C64, and had to lick tar off t'road for breakfast! Or something!

________
Hey InTheSand I have a ZX Spectrun + and +2 and a C=16
The old computers are much better than a modern one with the old computer like the a1000 it can be updated quite easy but with modern ones it like oh one thats rubish now its out of date I need something new.
One day I wish C= is back on the market like the old Days when computers were a thing to be proud of so.
LONG LIVE AMIGA!!!!
:-D
Oh yeah mel_zoom welcome to amiga.org

there is no next generation, i don't intend on switching this thread into a "we're all screwed with regards to amiga's future" thread, but i remember coming here around that age, and losing all hope in the amiga "advancing"...
it's just going to be nostalgia for the last of amiga's users (and their immediate family) after which there won't be any more amiga. sure it'll last for a while, but it won't last forever
-
Yetihw: Dont worry. Working in this industry, Im quite used to reactions such as yours. There is no rule that said women cant be interested in technology.
AJCopeland: I write whatever the company needs. For the most part its end-user product documentation. I have to write a range of documentation for end-users, resellers as well as gathering together and correlating the internal documentation for developers. Those guys tend to be great at writing code, but their idea of "documentation" are scribbles on paper, whiteboards or whatever else comes easily to hand.
Time to get on with just that!
-
@ Mel
Well I'm gonna continue to believe that you're for real. Why?
1. An Amiga buddie that looks like a super-model... i've been hoping to run into one for years (but don't tell the Mrs :nervous:)
2. Other female Amigans could be watching this to see how they would be treated if they joined us
3. I have a sense of humour and wouldn't mind if it was just a bit of fun :-)

Sometimes its the only way! They're like puppies when they pee in the corner and you have to rub their nose in it so they wont do it again. A harsh lesson but important... obviously I dont make them smell their own wee or anything...
I think i'll stop there :-D
No I like the designers, they do the thinking so that I don't have to. It's just that you often need more description in my feedback than: "Change the behaviour." things like: of what? to what? from what? how? which mini-game are you referring too? what element of that mini-game? is it even a mini-game you're referring too? etc etc etc  gotta reel them in and get a solid answer sometimes.

I'm a developer.
/* I don't do documentation */
Actually, that's a lie. I've been up to my eyes in UML diagrams and grepping through wads of source files and other stuff all day so that I can sign over this project. On top actually designing and implementing another system :-/

2000, 3000, and 4000 have batteries. Though some later 4000s have the disc-style so they're okay I am told the 3000 battery also hold information about the SCSI configuration so removing it MAY hurt things.
-
Hi, mel_zoom
;-)
-
Hi!
Just passing by but logged in to say I tested the A1200 last night. It wouldn't boot at first - just a dark grey screen :-(
I took the blizzard card out and then put it back and.... it still works :-)
Its running Workbench 3.1 and looking a little dated compared to some of the screenshots in the gallery. It might be fun to spruce it up a bit but the hard drive is only 200MB and its got only 8MB of extra RAM.
-
I think the Blizzard 1230 can take much more than that 8mb and SIMMs aren't too expensive, which version of the 1230 do you have?
Old 2.5" laptop harddrives are cheap, I picked up a 4GB one on eBay for £3 last year and it's given my miggy a new life :) Especially if you get WHDLoad.
Apparently you can add most of the OS3.9 features using the BoingBag updates. Someone else will have to comfirm that though. www.amigakit.com (http://www.amigakit.com) do ROMs (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=25&products_id=62&osCsid=10b61feaf93b95e58a6dbfb4ec0ea52a) for about £18 but i can't see OS 3.9 at the moment.

Edit: corrected links.
Edit2: no really corrected links this time :-D

Yeah, you're probably going to want to try to add ram...32 meg?...I still use Image FX a lot to do image editing and effects...it's just easier in lots of ways then GIMP or Photoshop. It does like more ram though.
3.1 is limited to a 4 gig partition size. I'd buy the 3.9 CD first though. If you're running 3.1 you already have the 3.1 rom which is as far as roms go.
You might also consider using the fantastic Amiga Forever emulation package on a spare PC (Windows or (I think Linux)).
That lets you use the ram in the PC to emulate Amigas with lots of ram.
-
Hi!
Thanks for that. Im probably not going to spend too much time messing about with it just yet but it is nice to know it still works. When I have more time perhaps I can look at it but there is such a lot still to sort out after moving!
Is this emulator available for OSX/intel?

Maybe you should take the advice of X-Ray in the Coffee House thread?

Personally, I think female amigan's are a myth. Made up by Microsoft to keep Amiga from world domination. ;-)

The more here the merrier as far as I'm concerned, we're a bunch of cynics here and refuse to believe that anyone who claims to be a lady who just happens to own an A1200 is anything other than a bored middle aged dysfunctional gent or someone out to sell religion here (note Blobrana and Cecilia excepted).

Since we were boys us guys have day dreamed of a beautiful girl just coming into our lives from out to the blue (c'mon admit it!!). In our day dream she may have accidently knocked on our front door, she may be at the bus stop one morning, or may have dropped her shopping and we pick it up for her (you've seen the adverts)
Well I think her arriving here from out of nowhere with her beautiful Avatar has reminded us of that old day dream. I haven't figured out the giving her a hard time bit though. Prehaps those posts are from the ugly ones who never found their dream girl
Right... I'm off to see my psychiatrist. He says I'm paranoid but he's always had it in for me :boohoo:
I'm outta here

Is this emulator available for OSX/intel?
This link (http://www.thinkcommodore.com/Amiga/AmigaEmulators/E-UAE/E-UAE.html) points to instructions to download and install the EUAE emulator for the Macintosh. Note: you'll need to be able to dump the Kickstart ROM image from your A1200 to a file and copy it to the Mac before you can run EUAE on it.

Mel..........Zooom!
I hope you have time to hook up your Amiga to the Max! click on my name here and look at some of my personal Amiga pictures. I have used my Amigas to work at Night clubs VJ-ing, and am currently putting together another Amiga setup to start up again. I will probably buy a projector this week and start doing parties again. I intend to do The part of the DJ and the VJ using the Amiga 1200 for all this.
Trust me your Amiga is a great machine..........put love into it, there are many peripherals for it.
and software and games galore. SuperNintendo and Sega Genesis type games of the 16 bit era that Im sure you will like.

Yes, usually the welcomes are warm here although I'm a little suspicious that having a Amigan-ess in the fold might have something to with it.
Provided that you have something interesting or new to say, a good sense of humour or even some newbie questions you'll get on just fine here, we are a friendly bunch. Most of the posters in the coffee house forum have made me spit my coffee out laughing at one time or other (step forward Karlos & x-ray, who warrant special merit).
However, we do have one or two idiots who use every opportunity to post something distasteful about religion or homosexuals. They're best ignored or labelled for future reference as a 'Length'.

Doesn't kafir mean someone who doesn't believe in God, as opposed to fasiq meaning someone who does but doesn't obey the God?
I could have sworn I read one of your posts quite some time ago saying you believe but can't be bothered to obey, or something similar.

Ever see the footage for Mortal Kombat: Armourgeddon for the Wii? The special moves are easily pulled off by simple gestures instead of complicated stick movement and buttons press combinations. This means matches will be decided by how and when you use the moves (i.e. talent) and not who has sat there and drudged through the repetive and boring tutorials to master 1 mundane special move that is easily countered with another.
It's also like saying that the guy that invented the automobile is the world's greatest driver. Not the case at all.
Higher-level tools let creativity and design come first.
The same applies to programming. C# is C syntax yet it is 100% functionally equivalent to Visual Basic, which is an object oriented language. With today's system specs, C is no longer ideal. C# is there to bring common ground on a common platform for you relics.
You can all sit there and make your jokes, but this thread continues to proved it, C(++) programmers are dork programmers.

Hence the automobile designer analogy as a driver. In the end, driving the car is what makes it useful. Making a car more complex to operate achieves what? - Poor sales?
Also, if one cars is difficult to operate and another is simple, the driver of the latter can spend more time focussing on the road, which is what is really important here, not who is driving the more needlessly complex car.

So? Hey, in 10 years, .NET will probably be replaced with something else. C/C++ programmers will still have a job.
How's that VB.NET port of Aros to the Wii going?
Man, Amiga must really suck, with the OS and like most of the apps being written by total dorks.
Dang, the Fiero must totally suck, with the ECM code probably being written by C dorks and all.

See above, it's mostly a generallization but directed at the other posters in this thread.
Does your impression of C like languages come from the position of being proficient in them but not liking them or simply from not grasping them as readily as VB?
I've taken C and C++ academically. Got an A and a B respectively. I had an A in C++ all semester long but in the final project, I made it SO object-oriented and used every feature of the language just to prove I could (like a dork) and then the damn thing just crashed at the same point for no apparent reason. I ran it on an Amige C++ compiler and on Visual Studio 6 (at the time). I re-checked everything atleast 20 times over in the course of 2 weeks. I could not get the final project to work right because the language was the barrier. It leads to cryptic code, the reference of a reference of a reference of a pointer. BLAH! It's garbage.
In VB, you code it, it works. If it doesn't you know why in about 10 seconds. The job gets done. Everybody's happy.

I agree with you about the C syntax. I'm using my C knowledge to help with a Basic compiler. I just hope we get the OOP syntax well enough to compete with VB.NET.

@ mel_zoom:
I'm actually gonna give you a serious response on this thread, for once. Don't worry, I won't let it happen again. ;-)
Rather than just use it for retrogaming I am thinking of setting up my amiga and using it to learn a programming language. There is no reason why I cant use my PC for this or even the mac when it arrives but I thought it would be fun and perhaps even productive way to get back into using the amiga.
This is actually what I'm doing. I'm an experienced programmer and I've known C for years but never used it seriously, and just recently decided to update my skills with C++. Rather than doing it on the PC, I figured, what the hell, I'll try compiling stuff for my Amithlon system and UAE.
However, C and C++ can be very cryptic and hard to learn. I never used it much on my Amiga in the good ol' daze 'cause I was too busy and it was too dificult to figure out.
All that said, if you're gonna give it a try, I recommend this bit of software AmiDevCPP (http://amidevcpp.amiga-world.de/). Of the Amiga compilers I've used so far it was the easiest to set up and get going with. That, however, is not to say that I didn't have issues with it. Nothings 100% easy. :-) If you're serious about this, give it a try. It, however, is a cross compiler, not a native one, so you have to compile it on the PC and then run the code on UAE or your Amiga.
So does this make me a "dork" too?
Be a dork! Dorks rule! If you only knew the POWER of the Dork-side!
;-)

This is probably why. You wrongly assumed that by using all these features you were demonstrating the appropriate level of dorkiness but in fact a good developer always knows when to use feature X and more importantly when not to.
Anybody can learn the features of a language, design patterns and a myriad of other techniques and paradigms. Knowing when and where to use them is what makes the difference between a bad developer and a good one.
-
I could not get the final project to work right because the language was the barrier
Correction: Your lack of intelligence leads to you being unable to bug fix your own code, let alone actually understand how to design it correctly in the first place.
*Anyone* can be taught to code in *any* language, it takes a special kind of intellect to be a good coder.
The language itself is irrelevant, a good coder can code well in any language.
edit:
@Mel
Want me to teach you to code? ;-)
-
CannonFodder wrote:

Bingo!
-
@all the coders
Language wars are pointless, you use what you must when you must and what you can when it's possible. Most of these choices will be made for you by the availability of the particular functionality you desire to achieve your goal.
I've gone from AMOS -> BASIC -> 68k asm -> VisualBasic -> PASCAL -> C -> C++ -> JAVA -> MIP32 assembler -> PS2 Vector Unit Assembler -> oh-god-who-cares anymore.
You can be as proficient as you like in VB.NET and then you'll be asked to: "port it run the server on Linux oh and the client on Mac oh and by the way how's the Xbox360 port coming along?" and then you'll be in trouble.
It doesn't matter. They're all good.
You learn to program but it doesn't exactly matter what language you learn IN it's the art of programming WELL that matters.
@mel
I think you've been welcomed and accepted now

Yes, you are all much more clever than I, please continue to tell me what incredible rocket scientists you are.
2 years of self-taught C64 Basic followed by 6502/8502 assembly before I was 13 as well as the following 9 years of schooling and 9 years of real world experience and I'm a real noob. I bow down to your levels of rocket scientistology (yes, I know it's not a word).

Well, if you insist on waving the willy:
I learned BASIC on the ZX81 (then onto the ZX Spectrum) and was writing z80 machine code by the time I was seven years old.
I built a 256KB paged memory expansion and wrote a functional (read crap but worked) eprom based switching kernel for it by the time I was 12/13. Unfortunately I ballsed up the hardware slightly and ultimately fried the lot during a later stage of the development
Took a huge sabbatical from it all until I was about 18 and started coding in Blitz Basic / 680x0 assembler for a while then taught nyself C, then C++. Since then I've learned a whole family of syntactically related languages.
-
You've achieved all that and you can't eat a Brussels sprout?

Why is it that whenever lou_dias posts I feel like stabbing myself in the neck with a screwdriver, I'd much rather hear from Mr. Hans George Cambell, hell I'd even prefer to hear from leirbag28

I just joined this thread and just read all 7 pages and Just cant believe you guys.
A female that is in IT, and has an amiga, and your all ready to gknaw your arms off........
Sure, I was all "Hubba Bubba" at the pic, and I am amazed she has not used a pic of a hippo sized woman just to have a laugh at the responses. I mean most of the people here are probably old enough to be her father.
Give her a break guys, its quite a change from Bangladesh, and I hope she will be happy with the buggeringly cold winters of the UK. At least the UK doesnt have a sea of Rickshaws down the street (yet).
Although I am sure london is getting there.

Mel, Another place you might wish to join for amiga related discussion, is eab (English amiga board) at http://eab.abime.net where i am sure there will be less drool lining the floor :).
Welcome to the world of amiga :)

Instead of waiting for them to post, couldn't you just stab yourself in the neck with a screwdriver?
:-P
@Karlos,
I've learned alot of sythatically DIFFERENT languages:
Basic (C64/PICK/Visual), Pascal, Lisp/Scheme, C, C++, Fortran, Visual FoxPro, 8088 assembly, 6502/8502 assembly, Ada, PHP and I have come to the conclusion that as far as high-level languages go - C/C#/C++/PHP/JAVA and the like are fugly. All assembly is fuglier, but those are not high-level languages.
Though JAVA and C# fixes alot of the "tacked-on" feel of C++.

This is the reason why we aussies call them "SEPTIC's".

Yes, I've used that adjective many times, however, me thinks it may go above and beyond, if you get my drift ;-)

In the world of Lou_Dias, c is a pain in the butt, VB meets the project requirements and pays the bills. It's a shame that he doesn't understand that for most developers vb doesn't meet the requirements, doesn't pay the bills, and millions of people don't have trouble with C++.
But it shouldn't come to any suprise. Hes got a passion for the fiero, but when it came time to trick out his ride he didn't pick up a wrench, he took it to a shop. Oh well. Some people just like their toys but don't have the heart to get their hands dirty.
And when he gets dumped he will tell you his ex got fat.

I'm not sure what you don't believe, however, they can clearly be identified by the ones who took it to heart and felt the need to return comment.
Would you like me to email you more pictures of us together over the course of 3 years? It's funny, the people who feel insulted don't feel a need to disprove the insult, only belittle me, right after I disproved the first insult thrown at me...
If they were secure with themselves, they wouldn't be insulted to begin with. Oh well...that's life. Deal with it.

If you were secure with your self, you would never have mentioned your ex, and you would have never tried to convince the world that visual basic is the holy grail of software development.
I kind of had the feeling that perhaps you felt inadequate about your programming capabilities, but now i'm inclined to wonder if perhaps you are gay as well, seing that you feel the need to bring up the topic of your relationships with women in your past, as if you have something to prove in this area of your life?
Not that there is anything wrong with being gay. I mean... you have already come out as a VB programmer. Perhaps there is something you would like to tell us?

It totally was. The fact that lou read that on page one ( 5 pages before he jumped into this thread ) and immediately intrepreted it that way made me wonder if he has something to prove in that department. Why on earth would somebody be inclined to email a complete stranger a set of pictures with them and their ex girlfriend over a period of time for proof of a relationship is just plain weird.

This coming from the guy who feels the need to email random strangers pictures of him and his ex girlfriend to prove himself.

Hey, you only get a fixed number of grandmas. What you dont understand is that most guys end up having more than one or two girlfriends in their lives. It makes sense to keep pix of the ex around when you can't get over it. Most people learn to move on, just like most programmers become proficient in more than one language.

Cmon lou, you know you get off faster responding to these posts than you did with that call girl who posed with you in that blury picture on your geocities page.

LOL, you don't give up. It's blurry because it was scanned from a Polaroid. I haven't updated the site in about 4 years and then only to edit "girlfriend" to "ex-girlfriend"
I guess you don't know what it's like to get all dressed up with your woman and friends and rent a limo and have a night out in the big city (Boston, that time).
If I post more pictures of her, you dorks label me weird for having them to begin with yet it's you who don't know the meaning of a well-rounded life. I'll tell you a secret, I have atleast 1 picture of all my ex's. I'm sure there are social deviants among you who can't fathom the possibility of multiple ex's hence the disbelief in this one to begin with.
Your childish remarks will resume, but making them is only waving your own "willy", as you put it earlier. However, internet warriors have no consequence in my life.
You are at war with yourselves on who can make the most "clever" remark. It's pathetic and only re-affirms my original statements.

A well rounded life doesn't revolve around pimping VB as the holy grail of software development on amiga.org. A well rounded life doesn't revolve around posting a picture of your ex as proof to what kind of tail a VB programmer can net. A well rounded life doesn't revolve around informing people on amiga.org that you broke up with some woman and she got mad fat afterwards. A well rounded life doesn't revolve around offering proof to random strangers that you infact did have a relationship with a woman by emailing jpgs of your personal life.

Does it involve taking all generalizations to heart?
Does it involve putting words in people's mouths?
Calling them gay when they don't share the same opinion?
Continuously trying to belittle someone with personal attacks?
If you had a life, you wouldn't be so uptight about sharing it. I have nothing to hide about my life. It's quite normal. Your unhappiness in yours is what makes you hide it and belittle mine to feel better about yours. You expose yourself with every post in that manner. It is inconcievable to you the statements I have expressed about mine. I understand you, however, the level of childiness in your earlier remarks denies you any of my pity.

Its a forum filled with people that have technical preferences. I know that theres a certain snobbery when it comes to development as there is in most places.
It looks like Ill be learning one of the "fugly" languages - VB simply isnt an option.
