Title: Problem with CyberPPC - FroggerNG - AHI prefs?
Post by: A4000_Mad on January 14, 2007, 08:17:19 PM
Hi,

I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to using my PPC. So can someoene kindly look at the attached screengrabs and tell me what the settings should be for the best possible sound when playing AVI., MPEG and Quicktime movies in FroggerNG.WOS?

At the moment the picture playback is great but the sound is rather distorted. To check the actual sound output of my A4000 i have booted into the 'Lotus Turbo II' floppy disk and it sounds perfectly loud and clear when playing this game :-)

When clicking on the 'Music Settings' tab it toggles between Unit 0, Unit 1, Unit 2, Unit 3 and Music unit. But its all Chinese to me! It looks like I also need to know the correct Paula or Filesave option 8, 14 or 16bit in Mono or Stereo. Gulp! Not at all sure about the 'Advanced' tab?

Oh.. In case it is of any importance I am not using a CDrom in the A4000 at the moment.

Thanx

A4000 mad

I guess:
Paula 14bit stereo++ frequency to max in ahi settings.

Make sure the application you are using is set to use the same unit number as you set in ahi.

But paula for mp3 etc is not that impressive.

i would disable also, Echo and Surround In Advanced.

Which AHI version? i would suggest you the old AHI 4.180 (light and stable)

I will assume that you have a sound card because otherwise there is no point in using AHI. It will only slow things down. I will also assume that you have configured the movie player to send the sound to AHI.
Frequency is way too low. Increase it to 22-28khz and see if the problem goes away. Disable echo too.

Edit: oops. I just noticed that you are using Paula modes. I suggest to forget AHI and use it only if an app requires it.

you should reduce  CPU Usage limit to 10% or less ;-)

with a 68k? (because you know AHI is 68K)

@ AmigaMance

Thanx. I don't have a sound card. One of the programs Moovid, FroggerNG or AmigaAmp said that AHI was required, but I can't remember which. The frequency is at max 27429 Hz.

It was probably AmigaAmp because there are no Amiga movie players that requires AHI. Use paula directly, not through AHI. It's pointless. (see my edited post)

 @ Amiga Mance

Thanx. I hadn't noticed your edit.

@ ravnen

Thanx. Setting Paula 14bit stereo++ frequency to max has improved the sound quality quite a lot for Moovid, FroggerNG.WOS and AmigaAmp. I don't know how to get applications to you use the same unit number as set in ahi, but all applications have been automatically improved with 'Mode Settings' changed to 'Music unit' and Paula 14bit stereo ++.

@ Framiga

Thanx. I can't really notice the difference with Echo and Sound Disabled in 'Advanced settings'. I am indeed using AHI 4.180. Am I correct that Moovid is probably using the 060/50 chip and not the 233Mhz chip? (AmigaAmp and FroggerNG.WOS are definately using the 233Mhz chip under WarpOS)

@ seiya

Thanx. Out of curiosity, why do you suggest reducing the CPU usage limit to 10% or less? Is it because the 233Mhz chip can cope with this task so easily?

AHI is 68k if I recall correctly. So your PPC is not used when using AHI programs for sound.

also you can get 14bit upto 48000 but you only need 44100. This is if you have a graphics card. You need to read the ahi docs for this but it makes alot of difference sound wize

Wow! I can use the Cybervision64/3D to get the sound up to 44000? That's great news. I can't find any AHI docs, so any more information about doing that would be much appreciated  :-)

about Echo and Surround, i suggest you to disable anyway (speed wise)

Then yes IIRC Moovid is 68k (probably the faster 68K player)

If you don't care about eye-candy, SongPlayer with mpega.library for WOS, is a good choise for mp3.

I have no direct experience of AHI used with Paula and
the only thing i can remember is that when you use a not- DBLPAL/DBLNTSC videomode (or a GFX card), you will be stuck at 28Khz of max frequency.

 :-?

The 3rd post above this one says that I can increase to 44100 if I have a graphics card. But the post directly above this one says I will be stuck at 28Khz if I have a graphics card.

(Well at least that is what I think they are saying.... Scratch! Scratch!)

Can someone tell me which is correct please?

I think he says that when you don't have an GFX card or don't use DBLPAL/NTSC you will be stuck with 28kHz. So the same as the other post.

Many thanks Flashlab.

I guessed that an Amigan couldn't stand to see another cry  :-)

Will continue to try and get this sorted. Any further help still appreciated or I'll start crying again

Does that AmigaAMP look clear or does it look clear  :-D  :-D  :-D

Speaking of AmigaAMP, it's one of the few Amiga progs which requires AHI, thus i need to ask this: How do i set the frequency to more than 28khz in the AHI preferences? Most mp3's are encoded at 44.1khz and this means that AmigaAMP will not be able to play them in full quality.

EDIT: Nevermind, i found the answer in the AHI guide.
