I think the question should be rephrased to : "What WAS Amithlon?"

It was a transparent emulation-based thing to let AmigaOS 3.x run on x86 CPUs, with the added bonus of being able to compile and run Amiga programs to run on the x86 natively. In effect it was like running an x86 native AmigaOS as far as I gather.
Ofcourse it was killed off by licensing-issues, bickering, and big egos, like a lot of stuff in Amigaland. :-\

Well you could build x86 native amithlon apps, but this doesn't mean that every amiga program would work out of the box if recompiled. Martin Blom's gcc did do automagic byteswapping, though.
