Does anyone have the know how to create a nice icon for me to get when I insert a Jaz disk please?
My current icon of OS3.9 goes into Workbench:Prefs/ENV-Archive/Sys and is called 'def_jazpc.info'
I have a photo in mind for the icon but do not know how to insert it into this post for you to see.
Can anyone be of help? :-?

if yes, it is part of KEN'S ICONS v3 u can download HERE (http://os4depot.net/share/graphics/icon/kens_icons3.lha) and are found on the graphics/icon (http://os4depot.net/index.php?function=browse&cat=graphics/icon) section of OS4Depot...

Thanks keropi,
That is the one I am currently using. How did you put it into the post please?

easy.... make an acount on photobucket.com or any other free image hosting service...
upload there your image and copy it's url...
then when u make a new post, there is a row of tools under the "message icons" the 3rd one ( (http://www.amiga.org/images/imgsrc.gif) ) is what you need to add an image in your post, press it an see

Gulp! :-?
I've e-mailed the photo to you. Would you kindly post it below please as I think I would be all day following your instructions above
I don't need the icon to be that big though
Thanks

Nice thanks.
@karlos
Very clear thanks.
Unfortunately I don't think we can just make a JPEG, PNG or GIF image, rename it as 'def_jazpc.info' and put it into Workbench:Prefs/ENV-Archive/Sys of OS3.9
Any more ideas please anyone? :-?

You can do this with PNG images if you run PowerIcons. Native PNG icon support for OS4 has been promised.

Run Sys:Tools/Iconedit.
Go to Project menu / open and choose your default Jaz icon.
The selector at the top of the window should say New Image (if it says Old Image, change it to New).
Choose Images menu / Load / Image... and select the first image.
Now the Normal image will be shown. Select the Selected box and repeat the loading.
Choose Extras menu / Minimise Sketchboard.
Choose Project menu / Save.
Done, reboot to take effect.
Cheers

@ Thomas
I haven't installed PowerIcons as I read that it even slows down an 060. I've not fuly installed KensIcons either for the same reason. But I have chosen some of KensIcons that I like and renamed them as 'Disk.info' and put them on my partitons (see attached Workbench screengrab) I'm prety happy with the way it looks :-)
@ Lurkist
Many thanks for that detailed instruction. I have an icon at the top of my Workbench screen but it ain't too pretty and is not a glow icon. I'm not familiar with doing this kind of icon editing, so prehaps someone could help me out a bit here please?

@A4000 Mad
If you use IconBeFast (Aminet) Ken's icons shouldn't slow down your system much
Using tons of his icons here and I'm happy with it
The PowerIcons patch shouldnt be slow either, it's a matte of running it with the right parameters..read the docs that come with it
:-D

Hmm, you might be able to fix that with the same program, Iconedit. Load the icon, select whichever colour is transparent (looks like the shadow the Jaz drive casts), then fill the whitish areas with it. Alternatively you could load the original pictures into a paint package and do the same. From there you could even flip them around so they face the same way as your other icons (of course they would look mirrored though) then save them again as icons from Iconedit.
Cheers

When you get it flip it horiz so it matches all the other drives.

@ everyone
Thanks for your help.
I've had no success in creating a nice icon myself in IconEdit :-(
Sorry to ask, but would anyone care to download the 420 x 322 image from keropi's post above and make it for me please?
:-?
I'm happy for it to be facing the way it is my Workbench screengrab, as I want it to stand out from the rest. I'm also happy with its large size but could do without it being in a white square of course. A glow icon would be nice too.
Happy New Year :pint:

I actually think it's a bit faster than high colour NewIcons.

OK dude,
http://www.teague.abelgratis.com/Jaz.info Big
http://www.teague.abelgratis.com/Jaz1.info Small
http://www.teague.abelgratis.com/Jaz2.info Medium
First one is the best, but quite large!

@ Lurkist
Absolutely awesome ! ! !
Just what I wanted thank you
I now have a great icon for the 2GB Jaz, Zip and PC formatted floppy :-) :-) :-)
(see attached new screengrab below)

You're welcome!
By the way, for a guy with limited Amiga knowledge, you sure know how to set up a nice looking Workbench using virtually no chip mem. What's your secret? Whatever hacks I use I could never keep that much free.

Ah. Kids these days, they don't know how lucky they are.
In my day, we were glad for the price of a cup of tea. A cup of cold tea, without milk or sugar... or tea. etc. etc.

Yeah it is a Picasso-II graphics card that keeps the chip mem figure looking good. After booting up my A4000 three very high quality JPEG images are displayed for Workbench, Window and Screen, but I still end up with over 2MB of chip mem showing :-)
This figure was just below 2MB in the above screengrab as I had just used CyberGrab to put a 400K ILBM image into RAM. Also Cyber-Photogenics was running ready to convert the ILBM image to a JPEG for uploading onto photobucket.com and briging back here.
My thanks to Keropi for his *idiot proof* instructions on how to do that
And thanks again for the great 2GB Jaz icons Lurkist

@lurkist
[SOLVED!]
I'm using iconedit in OS4. I cannot figure out how to "paint" with the transparent color. Off to the right I see a Transparent: [ X ] where the X is black. My color palette is replete with black. Which one is the transparent one?
It seems to always be the upper left one in the palette. I finally noticed that if picked the upper left color, THEN the Transparent: [ X ] became unghosted. I was helped by re-editing my icon and reducing the # of colors to 32. Then the palette squares became large enough to discern.
God, I hate learning by guessing...

Assuming a couple deft answers will set me on the right track above, anybody have instructions for how to use my new "ram.info" so it replaces (and stays put) the default dip-chip icon I see?
Eagerly,
George Wyche

@ dwyche
IconEdit drove me nuts
But I'm gonna try to be of help if I have understood your question correctly.
You need to put your new icon called 'def_ram.info' into Workbench:Prefs/ENV-Archive/Sys
If you just put in into RAM:Env/Sys it will not be there after a reboot.
Oh! in IconEdit be sure to select 'Disk' from the menu called "Type" before saving. With the great 2GB Jaz icon that was kindly made for me, I had to change it from the type 'Tool' to 'Disk' before it would work.

I'm beginning to think that IconEdit is worthless as an icon creator. I tried and tried. The created icon NEVER lives up to the pictures (normal and especially the selected) as shown in IconEdit. I have yet to get transparency.
I'm going to go look elsewhere. Bah!

@A4000 Mad
I liked the idea of full colored icons, so it is powericons for me. I read about them, then downloaded png_im.lha from OS4Depot. I created LIBS:IconModules png.iconmodule into it.
What worked for me was download an image. Use a paint program to make a total of 4 images out of the original:
#1) Scale original so the width was around 54 and the height was around 24 to 32 pixels. My specific case was 54 x 24. I saved it as fN.ppm (portable bit map).
#2) On original I made the outside of my object completely black and everywhere inside the object outline I made it completely white. Scaled it to 54 x 24. I saved it as fN-alpha.ppm.
#3) Was done same as #1, but I changed and distorted it so it was "different" for when my eventual icon gets selected. Saved it as fS.ppm
#4) Same as for #2, but as fS-alpha.ppm
Now then,
ppmtopng -alpha fN-alpha.ppm fN.ppm >fN.png
ppmtopng -alpha fS-alpha.ppm fS.ppm >fS.png
JOIN fN.png fS.png AS S:for_ram_icon
Next I edited S:user-startup, adding near the bottom this line: c:copy clone S:for_ram_icon RAM:Disk.info
And then, rebooted. I moved my new icon to where I wanted it to stay put, then selected it, [Icons][Snapshot], follwed by xcopy RAM:Disk.info S:for_ram_icon so that it now contains the X-Y coordinates of where it is supposed to go.
COMMENT:
I had trouble getting icons to stay where I wanted them until I put MY icons well spaced apart in the upper left of the workbench, put RAM disk below those and the OS4 icon at the very bottom. [Window][Select Contents]
[Window][Snapshot][All], then do that
xcopy RAM:Disk.info S:for_ram_icon trick. Now the icons come up where I stuck them.
One more thing. If all 4 images I was creating were not perfectly the same dimensions, then my icon did strange things, but usually just the "Normal" would show and only become darker when selected.
