Happy new year!

Until a generation ago, the two principal tribes in these islands had a wholly divergent approach to the year's final week. The English celebrated Christmas, a jollity that they had spent centuries in embellishing. But there was no public holiday on New Year's Day.
In Scotland, that was the most sacred holiday of them all, while Christmas was a normal working day. The Scots were suspicious of Christmas. The "mas" bit sounded Popish, and it was all bound up with the New Testament. The Scots preferred the Old one.
Over the past few decades, the ceremonies would appear to have converged, as the whole nation closes down for a fortnight. Yet there are still profound differences, expressive of national character: and the English do not know how to celebrate the New Year.

That is why a proper Scottish New Year does not start until midnight. The previous hours are spent lining the stomach with heavy food and non-alcoholic beverages, such as wine

That article does nothing to dissuade the rest of us that Scotland is a nation of alcoholics! ;-)

Well, my year's off to a blinding start! Upon hearing the fireworks at midnight, I opened the window so I could look out and it disintegrated, ejecting the pane, which shattered three storeys below...

Spent the first hour of 2007 taping Tesco carriers over the gaping hole.

So, who's lapsed on their New Years' resolution yet?

Me.  My new year's resolution for 2007 was to stop being such an ass with women.

I managed 24 hours of non-dumbassness.

Next.

I haven't lapsed yet.
And I'm not saying what it is, you'll just have to take my word for it.

Like every other year, I made a resolution to not make any resolutions! :-)

EDIT: and then I got stuck in a recursive loop!

I didn't make a specific resolution, but I've been behaving in line with my vision for the coming year!

Still didn't get my feckin' window fixed.  :-(
