Title: Voices of a.org
Post by: adz on December 29, 2006, 10:52:55 PM
This may sound a tad insane, however, I'm not the first to suggest it. Recently, there was some discussion regarding different accents from around the world. Judging by pics, locality and general conversation, I've formed my own opinions as to what some of you may sound like, not sure if anybody else does that, but I do. I doubt any of these are remotely accurate and the likelihood of meeting many of you is near invisible so my proposal is to build a web archive of peoples voices saying the same line. The line shall be the following:

"Hi, this is from Amiga.org saying hello world."

I've set up a gmail account to recieve the sound files:

voices.a.org@gmail.com

I don't really care what format you send me, so long as its nothing too obscure. They will all be converted to MP3 as I've only got a limited amount of webspace. Depending on how many responses I get, I'll begin the process of building the web archive, please note, I learnt web development on notepad and I've not progressed much further, so don't expect anything fancy :-D Anyways, I look forward to hearing from you all ;-)

Hehe, if Blobzie gives us a sample I might finally know what a Pictish accent is.

Actually, I don't speak with an accent, unless you call middle class English an accent (although I don't sound my 't's).

You can go quadraphonic if you wish, but it'll end up being converted to mono all the same.

Looks like my idea may actually take off, I've got two so far and I'm still waiting on Karlos and Whabang, I'm pretty sure X-ray was going to send something, but time will tell. I've recorded my own, so that makes a total of three. Come on peoples, the world must hear you!

Thanks to Wilse and mick_aka for their contribution :-)

I'm afraid I can't do it, mate. My voice is a virus and it corrupts all digital media upon which it is found. It is not recordable, the playback is just white noise  :-o

I think I'm surprised karlos has a lower tone than "expected". whatever i was expecting, i can't imagine!

hey, adz, on your site I only hear me saying "hi..". I think part of my message was lost in the ether. I certainly don't want you to work hard on this. it's not like anything I say is so darn important.

Strangly enough, I'm not even sure what format a cell phone saves audio in. (why don't I know this?? I SHOULD know this. god, this is embarrassing).

I'd suggest me resending via another phone, but I don't want you struggling with this.

When I visit the folks, I do. Since moving away from there, I have had to tone it down to be understood so much that now I sound... well as I did.

It doesn't take much to bring it out though. Getting excited or angry or simply being immersed in the accent at home brings it all out, like.

I should ring my mum for a while and then re-record it :-D

As soon as I get a chance I'm going to have to listen to you all...  I imagine Karlos to sound like Billy Connoly and I'm intrigued to hear x-ray's voice - could it be eloquent but guttoral saffer?

As for la Cece, I'm expecting a slightly vampish and velvety tone to your voice...

Nothing special, just an English saffer. A dime a dozen down in Earl's Court.
Blobzie is the one we need to get. Cos I wanna hear what a Pictish accent is.
Unfortunately, according to my ASBO order, I cannot distribute recordings of myself. I think it is also a provision in one of the Geneva Conventions.

To put it another way: "I ain't going down on no tape, dog"   :-P

Thanks to the benevolent Karlos, whom graciously donated some of his server space, Voices of Amiga.org can now be found here:

Voices of Amiga.org (http://voicesofaorg.extropia.co.uk/)

Thankfully his server supports PHP so that should make updating the site easier, assuming I can remembers any PHP that is

However, I must advise you that a South African accent is very difficult to emulate. You need to have specially-designed marshmallows tucked in your cheeks to pull it off.

Incomprehensible is perhaps a bit exaggerated, but many Swedes and Danes find it easier to understand eachother, than understanding a "Skåeuning", even though good ol' Terra Scaniae is right in betweeen the two. :-P

I can try and tidy it up a bit if you like - the spectrogram layer was quite noisy making the blue colour look flecked with jpeg artifacts by the time it was all put together. A quick guassian blur of that region of the layer would fix that...

As the original version was a preview and a bit brutally compressed as jpeg, here's a slightly tweaked version. It's a 24-bit png so you can resize or whatever before converting to jpeg for use, unless you don't mind 140KB banners ;-)
Clicky (http://www.extropia.co.uk/img/voices_aorg3.png)

-edit-

It's also a bit less tall so it doesn't use as much real estate when the page starts to fill with more content.

Which it will, right everybody?

Less is more, now all you have to do is get rid of that distracting picture at the top! ;-)

Seriously though, it did look better with the Boing in the window-background :-D. There's just no pleasing me!

-edit- Oh and some more moaning, the icons are of .wav files, which they clearly are not! *cough*

Okay, i'll shoot myself now!

Blurry boing ball background brought back.

@cecilia

I wouldn't bother: It doens't work in 9 properly either ;-) It does seem to work fine in Fx 1.0.3+, KHTML and IE5.5+

Trouble is, no two browsers exactly agree on CSS/DOM even now. No doubt I'll get to the bottom of it when I have time later.

What do I have to fear from a man who lives in a VW camper-van?  :-P

Hey you just reminded me of something. I picked up a copy of the free newspaper "South African" at the local Nandos today on my way back from work.
There is a mini-review of the new film "Blood Diamond" in it.
Of course, Di Caprio's attempt at a South African accent didn't go down well with the reviewer, who described it as somewhere between a Jamaican and broad Australian accent. They commended him on at least being consistent though.

Here's the top five list (according to the paper) of worst attempts to emulate a South African accent on film:

1) Pete Postlethwaite in The Constant Gardener. It was described as Afrikaans-Cockney.

2) Joss Ackland in Lethal Weapon 2. All they said was he should have been ejected off set. I wouldn't put him at number 2, but it was obviously an over-rehearsed attempt to emulate an Afrikaans accent.

3) Daniel Craig in Munich. He rolled the R wrong, and veered between Australian and Irish.

4) Val Kilmer in The Saint. (Actually I didn't think it was that bad an attempt).

5) Richard Roxburgh in Mission Impossible. He changed accents mid-sentence from fake US to fake SA.

Well, if he came from a Texan town on the Rio Grande, the blacked-out interior of his camper van festooned by strangely soiled copies of "Guns and Ammo" magazine hoarded amidst a collection of hand weapons, firearms and various hate material, quite a bit I imagine...

Luckily I don't fit that profile and neither do I live in a camper van.

Anywho...

adz - If I didn't know already, I don't think I would have pinned down your accent!

Cecilia - Hello! :-D

Karlos - Somehow you're speaking in the exact same accent I always heard in my head reading CU Amiga and C&VG mags from the early 90s. That sort of simultaneously laddish and nerdy journo vibe. I think I just gave your voice a wine review.

mick_aka - You don't sound bad to me...?

Speelgoedmannetje - My ignorant attempts at pronouncing your handle weren't as far off the mark as I'd thought! P.S.: I just have a good microphone. ;-)

Whabang - that is some enunciation!

Wilse - Well, I love tons of things about Scotland, the accent is definitely one of them. :-)

No, I meant Lou Carpenter... I just find his mention funny. You're right though, Alf is definitely much more, uh... strewthy than Lou, from what I recall. Didn't really watch H&A. :-)

I met a couple of Australians last week though and to be honest I think I spend so much time listening to Americans speak that I find it harder to differentiate between Aussies and Brits.
