Title: Anyone installed a Buddha Flash PHOENIX ed. Z2 controller on an A3000/4000 ?
Post by: keropi on December 27, 2006, 03:59:42 PM
I just received a Buddha Flash Phoenix ed. zorro IDE controller (needed a cheap alternative to the A4000 onboard IDE) but there is a paper inside telling that "although your "phoenix" Buddha would work in a Zorro Slot, it is not recommended to do that because of the additional Phoenix connector"
what phoenix connector? it looks like the kickflash to me...
anyone using one on their amiga?  :-?  :-?

also, is the IDEFIX software supplied with the card nescessary to install on OS3.9 ???

Sorry Keropi, no experience here.  But, why replace a PIO IDE with another PIO IDE?  (Or, is your motherboard IDE blown?)

I replaced it because the Buddha is faster, and because I needed the clockport for a subway ...
also the mobo IDE is too picky for my taste, some combinations just won't boot!

The Buddha Phoenix Ed is just ment to be used with the Phönix motherboard for the A1000. It just shares the same PCB-design with the normal zorro Buddha. Although eletrically the card behaves the same you might have difficulties to physically insert it into a zorro slot because of the upright facing connector that is used to connet the board to the Phönix. Why did you buy this special version anyway, if you do not have a Phönix. There was only a hand full made specially for those luck users that have such a board.

hm, I installed it, it shows up in early startup menu, but the amiga does not put when it is connected, removing buddha makes all OK again

I guess the reason is that it does not make full contact on all connectors because you can not push the card as far in as it needs to because of the upright connector.
Maybe if you desolder this connector...but that would be a shame as there aren`t that many of this cards made.

Clockport, yes.  Less picky, maybe.  Faster, no.

what upper connector?
it looks exactly like this: http://amigahardware.mariomisic.de/cgi-bin/showhardware.cgi?HARDID=1687
and fits the slot OK...
maybe I need to disable the scsi.device setpatch update, as I get the 2nd reboot...

Hi! all I,m running this card in a bog standard A4000 with no probs whatsoever, what I have noticed though is that the card is slightly shorter than the Z slot so I took extra care to line up the card with the slot pins it works allright I,ve got a laptop drive hooked up to it in the 4000 case (allows for more room) and intend to hookup a subway when I have time. I know this maybe a silly question but have you inserted the card right way up, the chips should face the daughterboard? cheers

yes, I installed it OK I bet, since it gets recognised on the early startup menu... did you install the idefix driver that came with the card? I concluded that something fishy happens  with the drivers on my system, I am running 3,9 +bb2 ... are you having the line after setpatch command, that says: "loadide expansion/buddha reset quiet" ?
also what name is the buddha in hdtoolbox? buddha.device? have you flashed it?
please tell me what u did, lol I get my nerves!

Well if it looks like that then it ist not the phönix version (I know it says in the PCB, but the PCB of an Blizzard1240 is also labled Blizzard1260)

You see the two rows of holes next to the zorroconnector ? The phönix version of this card has a connector soldered there that lokks like a Zorroslot facing upwards. With that connecor in place there are maximim 5 mm of the zorroconnector free to insert into the Zorroslot.

The pads of the connector are quite short so maybe by inserting the card completely the lose conection by surpassing the pins of the connector. After firmly inserting the card you should pull it out maybe by 1 mm equally over the full length

I will try pulling it a little to see if it improves things...
but I think bigmac may have some info too!  :-D

I pulled it 1mm, I even flashed it with the latest flash found in the last EB driver archive... nothing.... the card shows as working, I can boot with NO SS , but nothing more...

edit: another small update, I install the complete buddha driver, replaced the expansions: buddha-ide file with the newer 2000 version, and connected my hd/cd to the buddha. now I boot, and I get a message about cache-cdfs being restricted only to buddha_atapi.device, and the amiga hangs there.

Hi! I installed the card on 3.1 and then upgraded to 3.9 without any trouble sounds like a conflict with 3.9.you could try one device and try and get it going (HD)and then add the cdrom and reinstall the driver using the default setup you will end up with some extra crap on your hard drive but you can remove anything you dont want later. You may like to try a differant cable as well and check that some pins on one of the drives are'nt bent I would bet money its something really small and simple thats the cause of all your probs (hav'nt we all had one of these at one time or other:-)) hope this helps mate let us know how you go.
cheers

the thing that puzzles me, is that when the buddha is no the zorro bus, the amiga wont complete loading 3.9 , no matter if it's driver is installed or not...
it should be able to boot without a driver, right? I get the 1st setpatch reboot and then nothing.... :-?

Just a thought but have you tried to boot with SetPatch QUIET SKIPROMUPDATES "exec.library,scsi.device"  in the SS this is recommended when using idefix in 3.9 I think, give it a go and see if this helps.
cheers

I have tried skipping scsi.device, and the prob iw I cannot boot even when IDEFIX is NOT installed! I mean just by plugging the card makes my amiga unable to complete booting...

I tried skipping BOTH scsi.device and exec.library stptach updates, the amiga boots to a message: cache CDFS: can't open device scsi.device,1 (the cdrom?) and it hangs there...

Hi! just tried mine on a new install of 3.9 with no drivers whatsoever and the miggy boots to wb? You could try disconnecting all drives and cables from the card delete the drivers/software and just try to boot system if it still locks up or gives black screen then eigher the card is faulty (unlikely) or the card doesn,t like some other piece of hardware/software you are running, just a thought but have you tried a differant cdrom? you may even have to remove all the cards and replace one at a time to find the culprit yep pain in the proverbial I know, but you will find out whats causing you probs
cheers
ps no wb patches were applied on mine after fresh install.
and have a look at Pan1k's post on mounting cdrom interesting similarities to your problem hope this helps
cheers

hey bigmac!

last night, I formated the 3.9 partition and installed from scratch 3.1 ... ofcourse the format/installation was done with the drives connected to the buddha. then I installed the buddha driver (in other words the idefix package) and all was working ok in 3,1... hd, cd all good... so I made an emergency disk to install 3.9 , it worked to the point it loaded OK , recognising the cd/hd, but running progs (like screenmode prefs, hdtoolbox) gave a "Program Fail error" with the suspend/reboot options... either way I installed 3.9 , but upon booting amidock fails with the same error... so there is something really wrong... maybe I stumbled into incombatible hardware?
this amiga has the following:
A teac 32x cdrom, a 5400rpm IBM 40GB HD, a MK2/060@60mhz + 128MB Ram, a Cybervision64 and an Ariadne, plus the 16MB of the mobo ram...
now I am all out of ideas...

Hi! Keropi well thats a start the prob would seem to be an incompatibility issue Im running a 68040 3.1 with 18meg onboard against your 68060 with oodles of mem your also running a cyber graphics card which should,nt affect the ide card I am thinking it could be the related to the 68060 somehow, can you swap processor boards to a 68040 rev 3.1 and give that a go what rev buster is on the board I,m assuming its eleven is this correct if its nine this could also cause probs. Dont give up mate think of that gleefull smile of satisfaction when you solve this and then kick yourself after realising all the time you have spent finding the prob, but then again thats what the miggy is all about, cruelly tortuous fun suited only to warped twisted and highly intelligent people like ourselves :-)
cheers

yeah, I have a rev11 buster ofcourse  :-D
also I have the 16MB of mobo ram, I am doing one final test , this time with the phase5 060 libs corectly installed, I only used the g-rex 060 ones... maybe this solves the prob, I will let u know

I have found the problem!
the minute cgx4 is installed, I get a blank screen, like a screenmode cannot be opened!
I removed cybervision64 and then I boot again on aga... installed cv64 no screen!
there is some prob between buddha+cgx4+cv64 , I also tried cgx42.6 update, still no-go...

Hi,
i have the same problem!
yesterday, i got a buddha Flash Phoenix.
My config
A 1200
Zorro 4
Cybervision64 3D
I can only boot in chipsetscreen.
When i like to change to cgxscreen i get only dark screen.
Tomorrow i'll checkout Picasso96.
Maybe it works (hopefully).

@primero

Sorry I can't help you there, but I wanted to say that I just bought the same board from AmigaKit.

Firstly, I want to say that I got the board in less than 7 days which is absolutely amazing considering I rarely get the stuff that fast when I buy in Canada, let alone the UK! I wasn't charged any customs fees either. Awesome! Two thumbs up for AmigaKit here! :-D

Now, I installed the card inside the A2000. I tried plugging a 2.5" HDD (carefully paying attention to the pin 1) toghether with the floppy power connector to the board, but with this configuration the Amiga won't even recognise the card... :-? The drive does not spin up, and the Early Startup Menu lists no zorro boards.

With no drives attached or a 3.5" HDD connected to the secondary connector the board is recognised and boots immediately. I guess I could live with that but I would really like to be able to use the 2.5" HDD considering there's a 44 pin connector already there for it.

Does anyone know what might be causing this behaviour? The HDD works fine when connected to an A1200.
Also how do I know I'm using the latest flash ROM, and if not how do I update it? There is no mention of these features anywhere inside the docs provided on the floppy disk.
Also I could find no documentation regarding the flash ROM jumper...

Ok... I did some other tests, and it appears it is impossible to use a CompactFlash card with this controller...

If I connect it to the first port, all I get is CF adapter's LED permanently lit, and the Amiga does not boot. If I plug it into second port, the LED is OFF but the Amiga does not see the CF card at all and boots only from a floppy...

I am at a loss here... Either my Buddha is defective or it features the most incompatible design I have ever seen. I don't know what else to try. The strange piece of paper that came with the board mentions a manual on ami.ga, but there is no manual there...

Hey... looking closer into this problem.. This is what's causing my mediator ZIV to crash when I use any sound or network cards..

Without the buddha in it works fine...

I also found that there is a trouble with the buddha and certain ATAPI DVD drives... which will cause a system lock if you try and access them...

I have a Buddha Gold here too, that worked fine in my A4000..
I can't test the Phoenix edition though because my A4000 motherboard has died a terrible death :(

If someone wants to donate a motherboard though then I will be more than happy to test it all out :)

Update: I can get the 2.5" HDD recognised by the card now, but it was a bit fiddly... the CompactFlash cards still don't work, no matter what.

I think Buddha's ROM has several bugs that cause these problems... I also noticed a very funny bug:

when connecting a 2.5" HDD onto the first port and a 3.5" HDD + CF (master/slave) onto the secondary port, the kickstart 3.1 (40.63) will mistakenly think it is running on an A600 and display a CC0 carddisk.device in the boot menu. :-) I am using the card on an A2000...

Shame about CF though. I wonder if Jens reads amiga.org. :-)

Have you ever wondered that you might be running an A600 kickstart??? Cause I'm sure carddisk.device is NOT included in the A500/2000 rom.

The very same 3.1 chip is used for A500/A500+/A600/A2000, same version, same revision (40.63). The carddisk.device is simply inactive on machines other than the A600, but for some reason a bug in Buddha's ROM appears to cause kickstart to think it's running on an A600.

Anyone help with this card?  I bought it to add a fast cdrom to my A2000, but when I plug in the card and attach it to the cdrom (48x Lite-on) the cd light blinks and no boot.  I set the atapi cdrom to master and it's on the 3.5" second IDE channel of the Buddha Flash.  Any ideas?  btw I'm running a GVPCombo030/40MHz card with a 1Gb scsi drive and nothing else atm under a clean install of 3.1.

@Argus

Yeah, it seems that with that combination of card the buddha ROM and the SCSI ROM on the GVP card conflict somewhere along the line...

You'll either have to disable the SCSI on the GVP card or (if possible) disable the bootrom on the buddha... (ask on http://www.ami.ga if there doesn't seem to be a way of doing it)

I personally just use the buddha for my bootdrive and CD Drive (Although the buddha doesn't handle atapi dvd drives very well), not too worried about boot or access speed on my A2000 personally though
