I just read on slashdot.org that OS4 is out.
Is that a misprint???
here:

Not a misprint.
But as it says, it's only currently offered for AmigaOne boards, and is indeed the LAST release for those boards. Future releases will be for to be announced hardware.
-
Oh, okay.
-
...it's the to be announced hardware that has MY attention... More importantly the "early 2007" part. To my knowlege there are only two contenders for that kind of announcement. The Efika and the SharkPPC.
-
Good point!
I, too am waiting for the SHARK PPC.
In a perfect world, I'd be running OS4 on my SHARK PPC equiped A4000.
But in reality, I'll stick with my duel core iMac!!
So, what hardware (that exists!) can run OS4??

I dunno, it's the AckControls guy dropping hints. I've become too cynical though, I will believe it when I see it.

@redrumloa
S'why I haven't forked over the cash for the Efika just yet. Not real interested in a 603 based linux box when I've got 4 SGI Indy's sitting next to me.
However, differences or not, at a little over $200 there's really no excuse not to release OS4 for it. I mean c'mon, it's time to give us our toy. We've waited long enough.
-
some great points!
Let's wait and see (like all good Amiga owners have been doing for years) and see what or how this developes.
-
Don't forget the Sam board.. Thats another possibility.
-

Shouldn't that be: "The last release for AmigaOne only" ? ;-)
-
Thats great OS4 "is released" but I feel sorry for all the people out there who can run it who have a board they paid a lot of money for thats essentially unsupported now.
I'm guessing that when support comes in for other boards, the A1 will still get some updates.

Actually, I just noticed on the elbox website; at the shark pages:
Availability: Q1 2007*
I thought that never said a fixed date....
-
But note the *:
(*) Production of SharkPPC cards will start as soon as the final version of AmigaOS4.0 for A1 is released.
-
Any chanches or date for relasing OS4 to classic A1200 with Bppc?
-
Hurrah. And it works well.
Software anyone?
-
Ack made some rumour about there being some kind of announcement as early as first week of january.

Please provide a link to the source of your ASSUMPTION that this release is "indeed the LAST release for those boards".
Otherwise please do not spread rumor and opinion as fact here. I am sick of how some people twist every bit of information released into something more than it actually is without facts and confirmation (something the Amiga community is full of due to a lack of communication). :getmad:

Not at all.
It's the last version of OS 4.0.
Future versions will be 4.1 or 4.0.5 etc.
Future versions will be for AmigaOnes and the new hardware
-
If there is going to be hardware to run on then my money is on the Sam440.
Please don't start about the Efika because it's an underpowered piece of hardware.

They said they might release some boingbag updates though.

It is very cheap though... I myself would not mind one, since OS4 would fly on that hardware anyways and there arent really much cpu intensive software around for os4 yet..
-
Well....I wonder why the price of PowerMac G4/G5's is going up. Pray Tell someone is stockpiling for the OS4 release.
Or is it another PPC board or more A1 boards stockpiled or some other Second hand hoard of P4 based boards, all recons.....at a price your dumb enough to pay.
Lession 1. in how to make money from second hand hardware.
Find another bunch of mugs dumb enough to buy a 2nd hand piece of ancient hardware at New retail prices, and keep em thinking a new Amiga OS will be available soon
Has this happened before ?....na of course not, never, not in a million years, not a chance.
As the saying goes make me a liar .... :)
